This is honestly the stupidest reason to think about schools. Go for good programs with good funding that fit you--the idiotic stereotypes you have about a state just make you seem like a jackass when you put it like that.

And let him/her know about your MA program deadline! I communicated with my schools about my early deadline for ASU, and I just received an offer from Penn State accommodating that deadline.

Ouch, that's unnecessary. We're writing for a casual online forum here, not our dissertations.

If tards is not a part of your every day vocabulary, you need to get with the program!

Another element my professor recommended considering negotiating is teaching load! Maybe a school can't offer you more money, but could plausibly lighten your teaching load for the same money, which I think in some cases could be just as valuable.

How is being kind to people on a forum that is going to have zero effect on your academic career more "pointless" than attacking someone in a forum that is going to have zero effect on your academic career? This has nothing to do with moving forward in academia, it has to do with being a jerk.

Refuse to foster anti-intellecutalism all you want; your original comment wasn't "conversation inspiring," it was a downright insult. You weren't refuting stratofanatic's argument for Harry Potter and Dave Eggers until after I called you out--you were attacking him/her personally, which I still hold is unnecessary and mean.

Oh stop overreacting. I don't even care about the "canon", but there is not a single possible framework you can use to justify Eggers and Rowling over Joyce and Pynchon. All a statement like that says (and especially the criticisms of Joyce that show a complete unfamiliarity with his work) is that this person has no business in an English department--they can't think critically, and their intellectual comprehension is nonexistent.

I'm just stating the facts--if you want to get into academia, the holistic holding hands approach is pointless. I like Pound's notes on the Wasteland manuscript--forceful and not putting up with bullshit.

there are actual productive ways to talk about canon/the idea of a canon (see: large portions of literary theory in the last fifty years, works on aesthetics, etc.). two ways that are not productive: "different strokes;" harry potter.

Also trying to keep positive and avoid pulling my hair out in anxiety.

If it helps, I know at ASU the acceptances for rhet/comp went out a full week earlier than those for linguistics, and rhet/comp/linguistics is considered a single specialization here. There's hope for us yet!

Um, it does come off as a direct criticism, and I don't think by accident. I was just passing along the advice I received from a professor--this isn't something I completely made up by myself as an uninformed potential student. Obviously you are entitled to disagree with that advice...but I don't really appreciate the tone. Plus, as someone who used to be the person who received those emails (I answered my department's generic grad email address), I had no problem at all giving nervous prospective students some peace of mind, nor did the "secretary," (ahem, talk about making allies...I don't think many graduate program/department coordinators appreciate this antiquated title). In fact, the students who kept in touch with her, even about decision progress, were the ones she looked out for the most. Anyway, my mentor didn't say I should nag professors about when they'll finish already, but that I should email the graduate program coordinators just to see if they had an idea about where they were in the process. I apologize for that lack of clarity, but even without I think your reaction was, uh, harsh.
