  1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!! I grew up in Cambridge. We used to eat at that place all the time
  2. Our Adcomms, who reign (pre)academia, hallowed be thy names; thy decisions come, thy will, alas, be done, for us, and for those accepted; give us this day our daily decision, and forgive the spelling mistakes on our apps, as we forgive those who misspell against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us an acceptance, for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for now and through March. Amen.
  3. Glass half full = we don't have to take a statistics course ever again, grad school or no grad school.
  4. I'll probably develop a drug problem. On purpose.
  5. I love that it has become "the H-school." Seems fitting.
  6. Congrats MK! I wonder how many people they called today... I would love to go there, though I'm not holding my breath for an acceptance from them
  7. Really tough to say. The wait-list could be as many as 18 (they accepted 18) but might be as few as 5-10. They probably have some sort of rank, so as people who were admitted go elsewhere, they get in touch with those on the wait-list. But as far as averages, I don't think any schools have those types of numbers, and they probably vary from year to year. In general, most schools probably end up with 30-40 students they would really like to offer admission to, but money and practicality dictate they only accept 15ish. There is really no way of knowing whose going to end up in, out, or wait-listed. Sorry this isn't more help But don't lose hope! Consider:
  8. Someone just posted an acceptance to UVA. Anyone on here?
  9. My personal favorite was "Ugh" sketched lazily into the margins next to my introductory paragraph.
  10. Thanks for not being offended I too love Sylvia Plath. And I can definitely see not liking Joyce but liking Plath.
  11. You list "postmodernism" as one of your interests in your signature. I'm wondering what it is you like about postmodernism, if you can't stand stream-of-consciousness and need coherent structure with characters, plot, and story? Most of the postmodernism I've read has been less coherent than Portrait. I would probably put Finnegan's Wake in the postmodern category. Not trying to be a jerk, just curious So do I which is one of the things I love about the book! How powerful a book must be to engender such strong emotions from a reader! There were times when I had to put WH down out of frustration, and I would think to myself, 'what a fantastically well-done book, I hate everyone!' Anyway, sorry for ranting. I know I come off as a pompous asshole here, I promise it's just because of the barrier of the internet (I hope it's just because of the barrier of the internet ) I didn't like Babbit by Sinclair Lewis. Had to write a paper on it. Read half the book, bullshitted the paper. Got an A on paper, decided to apply to grad school because of my ability to get As on papers I wrote about books I hadn't read
  12. Don't ever watch Cold Mountain. Just read the book. The Hours was phenomenal, as someone said. I also love the new Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes (though that is a TV show and not a movie). It is freakin brilliant. There are also times, I think, when the book and the movie need to be appreciated as separate art forms. I think it happens too often that people look for a movie to recreate the book so they can relive the experience they had while reading the book. If you want to relive the book, reread the book. I don't think movies necessarily need to be true to the book. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close comes to mind; Oskar is a very different character in the movie than in the book (in the book he is much more timid and unsure; in the movie, at times, he comes off as cocky and pretentious) but it works. My point is, don't see Cold Mountain. Just read the book. And then try to pretend they never made the movie.
  13. Good luck, jma!
  14. This. It's a very strange feeling to have even one acceptance. I can't imagine what it would be like to have several
  15. I'm not a potential Victorianist but I would choose NYU over CUNY. As was said, both fantastic programs, but NYU has a far, far superior funding package. They offer 5 years of guaranteed funding that doesn't require teaching. They do encourage you to teach, however, which means you can earn an additional stipend on top of the fellowship they offer. Perhaps visit both departments (the schools are close to one another and I imagine you could visit both in a day) and see which seems more suitable. I believe NYU is ranked a bit higher as well, though that's probably debateable. Good luck and congrats!
  16. Haaaahaha! This post was in error. You caught me before I had a chance to edit
  17. Honestly I probably would have gone to CUNY, had I gotten in. But I'm still super excited about UMass! I got the official email today as well. And their email was really impressive and really, really encouraging. Hopefully I'll be seeing some of you this fall!
  18. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.
  19. Haha! I think your experience is definitely a plus. I have tutoring experience, but not actual teaching. I also think the writing program/other teaching opportunities after the writing program look really promising. Most of us are going to end up in small, teaching based colleges (as opposed to R1 universities) and everyone I talk to says that experience teaching is what will get you a job. So there are potentially some opportunities there...
  20. I've heard nothing and the results board have shown nothing.
  21. This is unbelievably awesome. I'm really happy for you! Congrats!
  22. Hey everyone. I posted this to the results board while I was lurking. I have since created an account, mostly because the anticipation finally got to me. I had to talk to other people who has lost their minds waiting. I figured I would share what I know, since I have in my signature that I have been wait-listed at UMD. I emailed the DGS a few weeks ago. I applied for a Fulbright scholarship to do research in Finland starting in the fall (if I get it). I recently found out I was a finalist, and my application has been forwarded to Finland for final review. I emailed some departments asking about potential deferrals, in case I receive the grant and am admitted. No other schools mentioned my status, but Maryland said: "You did not make our first cut, but are on our second list." I don't know how they know I'm on the second list if they don't have the first list. If they do have the first list, I don't know why they haven't informed people. I received that email on February 2. You now know as much as I know. It's a mystery to me why they haven't said anything.
  23. Yea, I should start a thread for this, because a few people have asked me. I emailed the DGS a few weeks ago.
