  1. Got the cryptic short list email as well. This is so frustrating. Got honorable mention for NSF GRFP and shortlisted here. I'm going nuts. Reject me or don't, quit messing with me and giving me goddamned pity awards!
  2. Well I had been having a very pleasant evening and now...well, it feels like I ate a tire iron. I think Im going to go take a nice shower and try and relax. One more hour(?)!
  3. I agree with SixFender above and think you need to weigh job prospects. While in this economy, nothing is certain, figure out what types of jobs and their salaries are available to you right now (and how happy you would be with those types of jobs) and figure out the salary difference between the MA and the PhD in those job opportunies. If the PhD offers you a job in the future with a significantly higher salary or a job you would be significantly happier in, defer the loans and enjoy the next few years!
  4. I agree. Take the jump. So long as its not going to crush you financially, moving is part of the academic experience imo. Its scary and complicated sometimes but moving (especially to the better ranked university which will give you the better looking degree) will teach you important life skills you would never get by staying home. One of my good friends had a reputation for acting incredibly immaturely but he upped and moved to a new state to start this really awesome prestigious post bach thing and he has become a whole new person. Its pretty amazing.
  5. Yes, this is definitely a factor. My GPA is very low I was quite surprised when I was waitlisted and not rejected almost everywhere and when Cornell actually accepted me-even for a masters. The masters degree may actually help me in my PhD pursuits by giving me some solid grades in a graduate program as a reference. Cornell has the better research fit by far. I applied to the other school, Montana State, because they have a decent environmental bioengineering program with a good focus on biofilm engineering and also because Im so in love with the area. While biofilms do interest me and if I had no other options Id go for it Ive come to the realization (actually through writing all the personal statements and some recent research breakthroughs) that I really would rather apply my degree medically instead of environmentally which is what Cornell is offering. My big research interest is in tissue engineering and biomaterials which Cornell does quite a bit of and are well known in the field for this while Montana does not do any tissue engineering and very little biomaterials work since they have the environmental focus. And that is absolutely the other part of the argument for me. I love the program Cornell offers more and the school absolutely has the better name which might make taking the masters a good choice for me, BUT MSU is a PhD and is more financially prudent. However, Im also not sure I want to more or less end my academic career at a mediocre school which Cornell may help with by opening better doors. But also as Ive said, a big issue are all the waitlists at the moment and I do NOT want to make a decision either way until Ive heard back from the rest. Im also not too excited with all the waitlists at possibly having to make the decision on April 15th at 11:59pm but I definitely need to think on this. Thanks guys!
  6. Haha dont question it and just go! I had a similar experience in which I was rejected from my alma mater and safety school (Stony Brook) which is a great school but its not a top 20 but accepted at Cornell and waitlisted at a ton of other big names in the field. Go figure.
  7. I would go with the overall better fit. Even if the lab isnt perfect, it clearly has you interested enough to be considering it. If you attend a school where you dont like the environment it doesnt matter how good the lab is you wont be as happy. Keep in contact and follow the work of the better fit lab-you are a PhD candidate and will be free to pursue whatever interests you for your dissertation (within reason!) but you will not have the same flexibility in trying to fit the environment to you. Right now I am in a wonderful lab but I really dislike the area my university is at and if I could do it over, I would have chosen a school that was the overall better fit for me. Im so thankful Im graduating since I was getting to the end of my rope in this location!
  8. So I have two acceptances now and since its mid-March Im starting to really think hard about them. Im still hoping to see what comes of the schools Ive been waitlisted at buuuut for now lets focus on what I got. I have one offer for a funded PhD at a good but not really prestigious school and an offer for a masters at Cornell which has a reputable program. Should I bite the bullet and take the unfunded masters? This adds a few years to my education and you know, finances. I was thinking maybe I could take the Masters of Engineering over the Masters of Science since its only 1 year which makes the money and time easier but Im not sure how this would look for PhD programs which are my ultimate goal. Is Cornell worth the time and money? Thoughts?
  9. Oh, and it wasnt some super short easy process. I more or less didnt sleep for about a month and a half while I did all the applications throughout December/winter break. I chose schools with January and February deadlines so I could have winter break to work on them hardcore. It sucked.
  10. I contacted professors from a couple of schools that I was very interested in working with but not for all. Several of my schools Im more or less going in blind on the applications process although I know the focus of the department's research. I did write individual SOPs for all the schools however I used one global template for them so I more or less changed out the name of the school, faculty, research focus, and changed the two/three paragraphs I had on why I want to go to this school in particular. But the background, research experience, interests, and goals stayed the same.
  11. Lol! Thats exactly what I did! I just adopted this very sweet and very pathetic older stray who is blind in one eye and has (thankfully asymptomatic) feline leukemia virus. Poor baby was dumped in Brooklyn and hasnt stopped purring since I brought her inside. Shes helping me keep my sanity : )
  12. 21 is an obscene number and that many applications becomes VERY difficult to keep track of. LORs were a nightmare and a half but as I mentioned above I really needed to case a wide net in my situation. I kept an Excel spreadsheet and checked off every piece of the application for all the schools to help keep on top of things. I also didnt really have a winter break since I was busy with applications 24/7. It sucked. Never again (I hope!)
  13. I was able to get the fees waived for about half of the programs due to very high GREs/serious disadvantage due to illness. I got two other fee waivers by getting invited to apply with an accelerated application because of very high GREs so I wound up paying for about 9 schools. Still pretty expensive- Id say around $1000. I needed to apply to that many schools as I am a complicated applicant with a very, very low GPA for a very good reason and the potential for discrimination based on disability which while illegal, still happens pretty frequently. I must mention my disability in order to explain the poor GPA. There were also funds at my school to help with application costs for certain students but I did not apply for any of those.
  14. Oh yeah, I am anticipating a TON of rejections based on my GPA. Luckily I cast a wide net and applied to 21 schools. I've already been rejected from three and knowing that I have SO many more chances is making this process a lot easier. Someone somewhere IS going to want me!
  15. I think most of us need a good whine at this point in the process and some of us need a good wine! Hur hur hur! Theres a reason I didnt go to clown college...
  16. Awh thanks! I applaud you too for making it through! Man those anticonvulsants do awful things to your memory dont they? I forgot my address, phone number, and where my mother worked when a poor concerned citizen wanted to call her to get my address and bring me home!
  17. Hey there! I am very happy that he has been communicating with me although it seems I jinxed myself by complaining up here since he hasnt e-mailed me back in and its been two days now (cue panicking about him finding a more appealing candidate). I definitely have been feeling pressured to respond ASAP so I needed a reminder to think it through, calm myself, then respond in good time. I am curious as to what the outcome with the POI who was emailing with you was? Were you accepted? Ugh, now Im in a grad applicant psychosis about him not responding ASAP like he was- I hope I didnt scare him off or seem desperate!
  18. Luckily I think schools really only use GRE seriously to assess candidates who have a meh GPA or are on the fence about something or another- its not even close to the biggest factor in admissions from what I hear so hang in there!
  19. Oh God I also forgot to add that one of my recommenders didnt do her letters for over a month after they were due (!), when she did them she didnt do all of them so I had to submit a few of them directly to the departments which while didnt cause any issues (probably because she was so late with them) was so stressful! Then I find out that she messed up a few of them she submitted recommending me for a masters program instead of a PhD so for a few schools she had to submit her corrected letter. She is incredibly well known in her field and her letter was wonderful but dear god, if I had to do it again I would NEVER ask her! Too busy! Too scattered!
  20. An iPad! And maybe a trip to the masseuse to get rid of all the stress and tension from the anticipation lol!
  21. Oh no, BreathingSister! That is pretty nervewracking! Wikipedia the subject and maybe read some articles and the POIs work in the field before the interview? For my one interview I more or less spent a day "studying" for it by reading the POIs stuff and some general info in his particular field so I would be stumped and since my interview was on the phone I spread all the articles out in front of me so I could glance at them. Im pretty sure 99% of us applicants have fluffed or straight up BSed one part of our application or another so you're not alone! We'll make it through!
  22. I clearly do so Ill start: I spent two and a half years of my undergraduate career beating a very serious, very debilitating, and rare autoimmune condition. It wasnt diagnosed for quite awhile due to its rarity so I spent a good amount of time in surgery/hospitals with severe problems and no explanations and this process recurred several times. This particular condition effects the central nervous system so aside from needing a brain surgery and three eye surgeries some of the medications I took were a pretty bad mix with academics: intense pain killers post surgery+ anti epileptics/neuro stabilizers = massive memory loss resulting in a real shit GPA. Luckily my symptoms were so severe and mystifying I got sent to one of the best of bests at Columbia Presbyterian, got diagnosed, did a year of intense immunosuppression and steroids, and more or less completely recovered! Seriously, you cant even tell there was even a scratch on me and Ive been 100% symptom free for the past year and a half now that my immune system has gotten its butt kicked back into place. However, the first two and a half years of my academics look awful (and I mean awful) while the last year and a half looks brilliant- GPA rose amazingly, Deans list, started research, got published, been presenting at conferences, been TA-ing, etc. but my cumulative GPA is still looking pretty pale in comparison to most PhD candidates and most candidates for BME/bioengineering also have publications, conferences, good extracurriculars, and TAs. I know my condition is an excellent explanation for my night and day academic career, all of my letters are very very strong, two of my letters specifically mention my disease and long absences and why me not dropping out looks sorry now but is really a great character trait, and I wrote a great cover letter which explains that I had a rare previously undiagnosed condition for that time from which I have fully recovered from but Im still shitting bricks about it since its my only weakness and its a pretty big one. Ive gotten one interview which went smashingly so far and me and POI talked about my condition and one rejection from a school which wouldnt accept my cover letter. Just wanted to vent. Anyone else want to share what weakness they're sweating over?
  23. Hi there, Got an email from my POI at one of my top programs on Thursday wanting to set up a phone interview for the following day. He calls me Friday and we had what I percieve to be an excellent 45min interview in which he discloses I am one of his top applicants he is interested in hiring and his lab will have enough funding for only one grad student although he is hoping for more funding to take in a second soon. About 4hrs after he sends me an email saying it was nice to talk to me and attaching an article he figured I would be interested in. I respond to the journal article, giving my opinions on it, asking some questions on it, asking some related questions to his work, and relating it to my research. He responds again attaching another article. I repeat. He responds a third time less than an hour after article 2 email went out attaching another article. I respond to that too. He sends a fourth article the next day. Again, I respond in a similar manner reviewing my opinion on the article, asking about his stuff, relating it my work blah blah blah. I have no solid offer yet (although he did only just contact me Thursday) but I think this is a good thing? Do I keep critiquing and relating to these articles? Do I cut contact and just wait? Do I pester him to give me something solid to work on? This process is getting slightly annoying and quite time consuming since some of the articles are pretty detailed and reading and gathering my thoughts on it takes a good chunk out of my day. If he offers I will accept. Help and thanks!
