Is it April 14th yet?

It's cool! That wasn't me on the results pg, but I'm going down to April 15th anyway bc of my various WLs, so just wanted to say I understand.

You're probably right, but a lot of times they seem to purposefully be using evasive language (like, you're near the top or near the bottom, etc.). So I feel a little weird being like, "let's be real, what number am I? and out of how many?" hahah

I'm sure it depends on the school, and what their yield rate on their acceptances normally are. I have been tempted to ask how many are on the wait list, but I don't want to sound too greedy for information...

Hey folks, if you're interested in CUNY the DGS just responded to my inquiry: "The admissions committee is still in the final stages of its deliberations. We hope to have our final rankings by the end of this week."

Definitely take UT. MAPH is an interdisciplinary program not geared towards philosophy, I doubt it will help you much. If UT is a live option for you, I know people with MAs in philosophy that would be happy to go there. You don't want to learn this the hard way by reapplying in two years and ending up worse off (not to mention having spent money on a non-phil MA).

update: since I last wrote this I learned that u mass will take up to a semester, so that's nice! just an fyi

In my experience they might take /a/ course, but not more. I think it's because really the phd boils down to the 2 years of coursework and 3 years of dissertation and defense. If they took more credits, they wouldn't be impacting you much and then you'd just write your dissertation and take the degree. So while I wish it weren't the case, I guess I see where they're coming from.

Honestly, I think it's a terrible idea. There are zero guarantees here. People go to excellent MA's and get shut out, every year. Getting into a top 10 school is something everyone who goes to an MA hopes for. No need to spend the extra time and money when it's highly unlikely that you'll do better, and really not worth the risk. Trust me, this process is not rational or predictable. You can't just reapply and expect do better.

@philstudent1991 I just got wait listed (high on the wait list for funding), so it seems more are going out now.

WL (for funding) at U Mass!

By name, but it was short, sweet and they didn't seem to mind. The website said offers were going to be made by march 4th so I was just following up to ask if they had gone out.

basically they just don't tell you about it and its an extended wait list... so if they haven't rejected you, and enough of their admits and official WLs turn them down, they might make you an offer. Still possible, but not likely. UCLA is also like this.

I've confirmed that purgatory for texas is wait list for the wait list. I don't think CUNY's sent out any of their main releases yet... I expect that in the next few days. Maybe your Columbia purgatory is also WL for the WL? Better to assume a rejection and be pleasantly surprised later.

When I contacted them they said I'd hear today or "friday by the latest," but I haven't heard anything. Not sure why they'd tell me I'd be hearing so soon if it was a rejection, but you never know. Anyway, either way I expect more from UMass tomorrow.

Also curious about CUNY. They clearly haven't made their regular acceptances / WL release yet, because that's usually a lot of posts on the results pg. Any thoughts on when they'll be doing that?

I just came here to ask that. Someone on the other thread said the only people contacted yesterday were the ones who had AOI in ancient. I just searched and it looks like in the last 3 years there's only ever been 1 WL post... so either their WL is very short (and people didn't post on TGC) or they don't do a WL. TBD!
