  1. Grand Valley is relatively new, Sacred Heart in Conneticut also is new
  2. Hi Lakegirl92, I would say 100% of them commented back and said yes, I should or no I shouldn't apply to their school. The ones who said I shouldn't apply to their schools, were nice and would sometimes tell me which school they think still took chances on students with my grades. Now i want to add a caution though because some of those schools who told me I should apply were also schools that never had any intent on REALLY considering me. They just wanted the $$$ of my application. etc. I hope you find some schools who give you a yes and that you get into a school that will value you and not just your GPA.
  3. Sure I will message you and you can send me your essay there or to my email address.
  4. I worked as an SLP with a credential waiver. Look up the company TES(Total education solutions) and see if they have jobs in your area. Also, check enjoin.org every day. You can search for SLPA and then it will tell you if the job requires a certificate. I went to CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE for my undergrad just to give you some background. Most schools do not give you any extra points for being an SLPA. ALL they want is that you have worked in similar fields, like tutor, Special ed assistant teacher, etc. Any of the therapies also, like behavior therapist aide. I would not spend the $5k for the SLPA program. Especially since it was $4k just last year! Thats crazy. Get a part time job doing anything in a school working with kids. Can also search those jobs on EDJOIN.ORG Email the schools you are applying to as well and see if being an SLPA would "beef up" your application or if related job experience would work. MEssage m e if you want more info or advice. Mike
  5. I was accepted for FALL 2014. December 2015 reflects my anticipated graduation date. sorry.
  6. check out my stats below. I had a 2.0 in my first 5 years of school off and on. I took a couple years off and my last 3 years of school I got 2 C's and the rest B's and A's. Explain in a simple sentence your past grades and then highlight your GPA in the last 60, experiences, etc. Good Luck!
  7. They accept 30 each cohort. They have a fall and winter cohort, so 60 per year if you take that into account. I had the same trouble with getting a tour. I visited back in April. To be honest, it's not much to tour. The Cook-Devos Health Sciences building is where all of the classes are held. All of the classes are held basically in one room also in that building. All Clinical praticum is done off site in different surrounding cities. So don't worry about a tour. You can google earth or map the building and that's basically the tour itself. All of the professors are busy so it's hard to schedule a tour also. I move up to Michigan in 3 weeks!
  8. I know GVSU in Grand Rapids looks at the whole picture. My GPA and GRE's are not that great but they interviewed me and took me as a person into account and my experiences in the field. I highly recommend them.
  9. I know they were recently placed on probation by ASHA : http://www.asha.org/academic/accreditation/caaDecisions/ Scroll to the bottom of the page and see the schools who were just placed on probation in March
  10. First, Thanks for offering your advice/assistance slpgirl19.... I am in the dilemma of what type of computer to get for grad school. As far as the computer you brought to classes, what did you use and what did you see others using? what would you recommend? In undergrad I used an IPAD for classes and took all my notes on it. I had a desktop or Laptop at home for when I needed to write papers, but never needed a laptop for classes. What do you suggest for classroom work? DO a lot of grads get iPads to use for therapy? Did you? Thanks!
  11. I don't know about everyone else, but the hardest part has been deciding on an apartment/place to live. It's hard when you live 2,000+ miles away and can only see pictures of places and google map the streets and neighborhood! lol We plan on moving a week before school starts so there won't be much time to physically see places or the good ones might be all taken!
  12. Your Verbal and AW are decent enough and thats all they really look at. What you could do is email the programs you will be applying to and ask if they suggest you give it another try. I had a AW of 3.0 and many programs I was applying to said I shouldn't worry about taking it again.
  13. My FEAR is that I will not remember things I learned in Undergrad and need to study twice as hard. Also that It will snow A LOT in Michigan and I will get in a car accident. My graduate school FOCUS will be the older population with Dysphagia, TBI, Stroke, etc. My career DREAM would be working in a SNF and loving what I do. I love listening and working with older people. They have so much to say and pass on. I think I would love going to work every day of my life!
  14. I want to first say I am sorry about your cousins passing. I am also glad you have fought through it and have found ways to cope. Like Daisynic said, Email program directors now and basically copy and paste what you just shared with us in this thread and ask for advice. Be completely honest and ask the program if they would look favorably on an applicant with your circumstance, stats, etc. The programs will be straight up with you and I'm sure you will find that even the "harder to get into" programs would look VERY favorable on your last 60-90 unit GPA and your GRE's are even better than average. Your experience is another thing that seems favorable as well. By emailing programs you can also eliminate programs who feel you wouldn't stand a chance in their applicant pool. I ended my B.A. in Communicative Disorders with an overall GPA of 2.77. My last 60 GPA was 3.35. My SLP GPA was 3.28. I got into 2 schools and wait listed at 3. MY only question would be.... If you got many F's those first 2 years..... wouldn't all of those F's been replaced by your A's that you got since returning to school in 2011? A's and D's can be retaken and eliminated from a transcript/Overall GPA. I had 2 or 3 in my CC days. The C's and B's normally cannot be retaken for better grades(depends on the school). Either way, you will get into a school if you start emailing them now and show your passion and determination early on. Good Luck!
  15. CONGRATS! You deserve it!
  16. You stand a really good shot. I am a 31 year old with a lower GPA, lower GRE's and less experience and I got into 2 schools and on 3 wait lists for this fall 2014. I'd say if you DO plan on applying to programs outside of NY as "safety schools" be sure to email them a few times in the next 6 months so they know your name and that you are not just someone applying to their school as a safety or fall back school. Also email the NY schools to show interest and get your name out there. Other than that you are sure to get into a program! Good luck!
  17. Salary for an SLPA in California can range from $15/hr-25/hr starting wage. After that you can make up to $30/hr after many years.
  18. I know they dont take my stats, but I also was in direct contact with the program coordinator and I found her to give me false information in regards to my application. Something that I think is very un-professional.
  19. Hmmmm.... Experience wise I worked as a teachers assistant in a Resource Specialist Class for a year, worked in Nueroscience(nuerofeedback) for a year with a population from 5-80yrs old. I worked as an SLPA for a school year. I lived in Brazil for 2 years and speak Portuguese and am somewhat conversational in Spanish. I also did my HW as to what schools to apply to. I emailed probably more than 100 schools who seemed to be easier to get into because of my overall GPA. After talking to all of those schools I still had about 30 schools I potentially could of applied to, but got it down to 15. Of the 15 I applied to there are a few that I wouldn't recommend applying to. I found out after that they either take mostly their own or really don't take people with my stats, they just wanted the $$$ from the application. I wouldn't recommend applying to U of Montana, West Texas AM, Texas AM-Kingsville, and Western Carolina University.
  20. I applied to all schools that look at the last 60 units/credits so just take a look at my signature below for 15 schools who look at last 60.
  21. I have been working with nuerofeedback the last year and it helped me gain more knowledge, gain patient 1 on 1 experience and I love it! I think your background would serve you well! Good luck!
  22. Here is GVSU's FB page for class of Dec 2015: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GVSUSLPDEC2015/
