I think it is still early for most schools. I don't expect to hear from UofM about an interview (if they do one) for another week or two. New Brunswick will be at least another three weeks. McGill, well that was much earlier than I expected to hear back about. I won't be contacting any prof's until at least a week after I expect interview invitations to be sent out.

I would say, look at when most students are being contacted for interviews and add a few days at the earliest. They need time to look at your application. Patience is key!!! Remember, some profs will not be doing interviews at all if they have someone already in mind for who they want to select, so not being asked for an interview is not a end-all scenario. I was in top two for selection at Manitoba last year, there was a flip of coin almost in deciding which student to choose between, and there was no interview at all. Don't lose faith!!!!

New Brunswick usually starts contacting people for interviews in the first or second week of February, FYI!

  2. What are people's thoughts about wearing dark coloured (black) tights under a black dress/skirt for business formal interviews? I have nude coloured pantyhose, but I usually wear black, and I'm worried that this may be too much black with the blazer, dress, and heels.

I haven't gotten one, but I think that date might be wrong because one faculty member told me that she wasn't submitting her shortlist to the department until January 15th or 16th.

Yeah I did wonder about this, since I only spoke with my POI last Tuesday, and he said that he had a few other applicants to interview with for the rest of the week.

I think a short cardigan and a scarf could look nice but still dress it down.

Thanks! I never considered wearing a scarf. I may have to buy a short cardigan though....I tend to have more longer ones, and I think the only short one I have is a really bright pink! Should I go with the same basic pair of black heels for the social, or go for flats? I'm wearing these in the regular black, and find that they tend to transition between dressy, business, and casual well: http://www.payless.com/womens-karmen-pump/70962.html?dwvar_70962_color=blackpatent#start=8

  5. So I'm wearing this dress to my interviews paired with a matching blazer and heels (part of a suit set): http://www.sears.ca/en/dresses/canadas-best-a-line-dress-5421360_P.html?cgid=wh3_women_dresses&dwvar_5421360__P_color=black#sz=40&start=1&pageStart=193&pgSize=206&cgid=wh3_women_dresses

I was thinking of dressing it down for the department socials so that I don't have to bring too much clothing with me. Does anyone have any ideas on how best to do this? I'm limited in terms of clothing right now so I'll likely have to buy something new.

At what point is it appropriate for one to start turning down interviews? I'm getting more interview offers than I expected and so have been asking for skype interviews for a number of them considering a lot of the on campus interviews are on the same day. However, it seems like even with skype interviews everyone seems to want to schedule things on the same days. I don't want to turn down any interviews since I never know if/which program I might get accepted at but is turning down interviews something people do?

I'm having the same problem. You're lucky that a lot of them are even considering Skype interviews. Some of mine are either "show up or we won't consider you," so it's spend $1000 and 6+ hours of travel to get there after begging for the time off work for a few days....

Hopefully the interviews go well and you can at least find out right away if you've been accepted. I wish you the best of luck in balancing work and school!

Thanks! I'm fortunate that all but 1 of the original 5 interviews I got invited for (not counting the 2 I got today) will do it over phone or Skype. I just wish the interviews were held on weekends, would be a lot easier for travel.

I'm looking forward to this being over, haha. I was recently made two job offers and telling them off the bat that I need days off is kind of awkward. Soon we will feel sweet relief :)

That's the struggle I'm facing. I'm starting this new job on January 30....my first interview is the 3rd. I'm already taking 3 days off in my first 2 weeks to interview for PhD programs (which they don't know about) and I very much can't afford to take anymore off because this job is my fallback option if I get rejected from everywhere. I won't have this problem if I stayed in my current job since my boss was one of my references.

I'm in my first year of a Clinical Psych PhD and just curious if my program is doing something unusual or not.  I've just learned that two of my core classes will be taught by other students (either a second or third year) in my program.  There will be a faculty member overseeing both classes, but students farther in the program have said the faculty member never shows up and leaves everything to the students who are teaching.  This seems really odd to me.  I'm familiar with students guest lecturing for graduate classes or teaching undergraduate classes, but teaching a core graduate class largely unsupervised?  I don't assume I can dictate how the program runs, but I don't think it is unreasonable to be concerned about whether or not I will learn everything I need to.  Our program isn't experiencing a shortage of available and highly qualified faculty either.  Has anyone else experienced this in their program?

I had this at the university where I did my Master's, although these classes were 1) taught by students who had already been awarded Master's degrees, and 2) were pretty much the experts in their teaching subject (e.g., the police psychology course was being taught by someone who conducted research in the area of police psychology and was just wrapping up her dissertation). It's unreal to me that they would let some just barely into a PhD program teach a course without having a separate graduate degree beforehand. Sounds like the faculty is just lazy in this case (this happened to me with an undergraduate course I was TAing for where me and the other TA basically became the defacto instructors because the prof rarely showed up or did much of anything).

    Hi everyone,

A POI asked me how many schools I've applied to. I was hoping a few of you could share how many schools you've applied to in order to give me an idea of the number for the typical Canadian student.

    Thanks!

    I've applied to 12 clinical/counselling programs.

I have not heard back from any schools yet :( Getting worried since I have applied to Ryerson, SFU, and Concordia

Don't give up hope for Ryerson! The initial contact is largely dependent on POI. I think there still may be POIs who have yet to contact applicants.

FacelessMage, if you don't mind my asking, is your interview at Ryerson a preliminary interview with your POI or were you invited to the actual interview day? I'm pretty sure the official invitations aren't going out for a while, but I'm neurotic and had to ask! And congrats on all the interviews!

It's a preliminary interview via Skype. From my understanding (via my friend at Ryerson), the POIs usually contact folks for a preliminary interview before the invitations to the interview day go out.

Also, thanks! This is my fourth time applying, and I can't believe the amount of success that I've had!

Hey, is this done through email? Also, do you know if they update our application status on their online system? As when I go to check, it doesn't say anything except the date mine was submitted. Thank you :)

SFU does all their notifications through email. If you didn't get an invitation to interview, you'll likely get a rejection email within the next 2 weeks (this is my fourth time applying to SFU, so I know the drill).

I'm curious where everyone would rank Concordia's and Dalhousie's clinical programs relative to each other and to the other programs in Canada? Thoughts?

I feel like "ranking" clinical programs in Canada is pointless if they're accredited by the CPA. I think the rankings matter more in the US since there's a glut of non-accredited clinical PhD and PsyD programs. There's the basics such as funding, practicum opportunities, etc. that you need to consider when making a decision, but it's more important to consider the reputation of your individual POI, as they're the ones who will, largely, be writing reference letters for you, which will determine what internship opportunities you get (take it from me, the right POI can open doors for you in terms of research and clinical opportunities).

What's most important is that you attend a program that will provide you with the necessary skills and experience to 1) get an accredited internship, and 2) meet the licensing requirements in your province. I have yet to hear of a Canadian program that fails to do this.

I think (and this may be inaccurate) a lot of schools hold off on sending out rejections until after offers are made. In theory, everyone interviewed could suck or decline the offer and they have to go on down the list. I would say this rarely happens but it is a possibility. One time I got a rejection in October. Like, thanks for the email but considering your semester already started, I kind of figured out I was rejected.

This has been my experience in past cycles. Some schools will often have one shortlist of maybe double the amount of spots, and perhaps a backup list in case they go through the first, but will drag on sending out rejections until all the spots are filled. Occasionally they'll send out multiple rounds of rejections, starting with those who don't meet the criteria. October is really ridiculous though. Someone really dropped the ball there considering the APA standard of April 15 for people to accept their offers.

Is it worth it to email profs at this point to follow up on your application? Or is it better to wait things out until they (possibly) contact you?

I'd wait things out. Traditionally, most Canadian schools don't contact applicants about interviews until the second or third week or January, depending on when their interviews are. With some schools, it's the individuals POIs who will be doing the contacting (I know Ryerson does this, along with Carleton), so even if someone else has heard something from the one school, it may be that that your POI is still in the process of contacting their applicants.

Nice to know I'm not alone! Kind of crazy to think we weren't apart of the mass rejection letter and even crazier that yours is still under review. I haven't checked mine but maybe I should! It just gives me such anxiety thinking about it haha

I had that happen with me with South Florida last year. Saw 2 rounds of rejections go out with a month in between them before I was rejected in a third round a few weeks later.
