  1. CSCA it's also coming up if anyone is going (Central States Communication Association )...I'm gonna be hangin' out.
  2. Two friends of mine were interviewed at Northwestern and one is now almost finished with the Comm program and they both told me the interviews were to basically cut through the BS in their statements, haha. I'd review what you wrote in your statement and sample and look over your most frequently cited scholars. Gah! Good luck!
  3. No, we also applied to Denver and Bowling Green State University!
  4. Husband got a rejection from UPenn today. He just laughed cause it was a bit of a long shot. Hoping y'all who applied there get better news soon.
  5. Aw @DBear! I'm very happy for you to be getting all of this good news. I think much of what you worried would be a deterrent for your apps was actually what probably helped you stand apart-- 1) your background gives you a completely unique perspective in a field that can sometimes get a bit homogenous and recycled with how folks tend to cite the same people over and over. I think this a frustration comm as a field is experiencing right now. 2) your age is definitely a benefit. It shows you know who you are, you have lived in the world, and the decision to pursue a PhD isn't because it's what's next or what's expected. Also, I think a lot of folks start their PhD in their 30s-- I'm 28 and feel young! 3) your method of deciding where to apply (finding people with research you found interesting/relevant to your interests) was very smart. I think sometimes we will be more focused on the program than the people who could potentially be our advisers so we force the fit. You have earned these great responses! Imposter syndrome is no joke, but just remember most PhD programs will break you down and build you back up to reflect their values. Your cohort will be right there with you. I'm so excited to see how your journey ends up!
  6. Good! Husband is going to the open house at Iowa and I'm hoping that'll magically bump him up to admitted since he's so charming ? Will you get to visit Davis?
  7. Sorry to hear that @ejpril88, but I know it's a relief to be nearing the end of the waiting game. I'm excited to hear how your visit to Purdue goes!
  8. I think with your stats and interests you could get into a lot of programs, but I'd look closely at degree requirements for programs you're interested in. My MA was heavily geared toward pursuing a career in academia/teaching, and while an MS was an option and you could do an internship instead of a thesis, the coursework was largely based on learning theory and methodology to prepare you for doctoral work. Having said that, at no point did I feel like my MA divorced politics from social justice or issues of inequity.
  9. I am gonna run with the protest idea. Love it.
  10. My MA acceptance didn't come til very late March. I'm basing my expectations off history in the admission results-- most schools we applied to (he applied to 5, I applied to 4) have a history of responding in early Feb but we haven't heard much beyond UMN and Iowa waitlist.
  11. This entire admissions season seems a bit behind past years. I wonder why that is? My admit from UMN, for example, while early was still two weeks after what is consistent with them. U of Iowa and BGSU American studies tend to announce by now... I'm trying to hold onto the idea that no news is good news, but when you see other folks getting movement it really is frustrating and kinda miserable ? Time crawls
  12. Hooray! Sorta! Husband (I hate calling him that, I don't talk like this in real life) is on the waitlist for Iowa. At this point, just massively relieved it's not a rejection...he needs some good news.
  13. The chair of our department always says, "number one rule of academia, don't hold anyone to a timeline." TOO BAD THIS OUR DANG LIIIIIVES
  14. really wish i would have waited to eat the pint of ice cream til AFTER Iowa decided to ignore my partner waaah going back into my depressed hole
  15. Just waiting for them to send decisions. Misery. They said the end of the week and nothin yet.
  16. Iowaaaaaaaa what the heck ?
  17. Wowwwwwww that SUCKS! I'm v sorry
  18. time feels like it doesn't exist anymore...but yr right.
  19. Just re-read your older posts @phdthoughts-- I will def tell you as soon as I hear anything!!
  20. Mass comm or comm? Did you interview? Communication (at least rhetoric and media tracks) did interviews on Tues and Wednesday and said they'd make decisions by the end of the week.
  21. Saw an acceptance for U of Iowa's American Studies program today, and considering my partner will know if he was accepted to the Comm program tomorrow I'm feeling a little bummed. Long distance marriage ftw I guess hahaha.
  22. Haha! I forget how much I've traveled sometimes...I blame speech & debate!
  23. Only one I can think of is North Dakota State University! Their deadline is in March. Fargo is a pretty cool place...
  24. Tiny update: husband just got an interview request from Dr. Hayes at the University of Iowa.
  25. It may be scary not hearing anything when others are, but no news is still promising! At least at UMN, the first group of rejections went out last week-- a week after the first round of acceptances, and they do at least 3 rounds of acceptances usually. Hope this can give y'all some hope!
