  1. Random update: a friend of mine received an acceptance from Arizona State University today, no word on funding yet
  2. Good luck @The Shade King! Was talking to a friend of mine who said he got off the waitlist in March after a lot of folks rejected their offers (people seem v turned off by the cold)...which is a long time...BUT STILL! Hope for you yet.
  3. Haha @ejpril88 or you will live and long and happy life while I die of a heart attack at 35...time will tell hahaha. I'm on anxiety/depression medication (started in November) and I don't even want to THINK about my mental state had I not gotten the prescription just in time! Yeet.
  4. @DBear That is nerve-wracking but simultaneously SO EXCITING! Most people I know who have applied haven't even gotten an interview (or they went so poorly they didn't tell me bahaha.) Any idea when it'll happen yet?
  5. @GreenEyedTrombonist That is HELL. UMN has had admissions in the past as early as January 13th, so for a good ten days I was reloading my status like literally every 5 minutes. I'm sorry! I hope you hear SOMETHING soon.
  6. @DBear He applied to Denver, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Bowling Green (comm studies), and Minnesota. Also UPenn on a whim, bahahaha. We love Denver's program but they only fund a few students and we don't know if even if we both got funding that it'll be doable with how high cost of living there. The stipend at Minnesota is pretty good for the area and everyone admitted is guaranteed funding (as it should be-- On principle, I appreciate the program all the more for it). Plus we LOVE the Twin Cities. Sorry, I'm rambling. I can't find anywhere else to talk about PhD where people give a hecky. Sleep has been my only respite from this agony! I can't imagine if I had interviews and such with the programs you've had. Cryogenic freezing would be better.
  7. My statuses were changed in the middle of the night for Minnesota. I woke up at like 6 one morning to "final review" and then my acceptance was posted at 2am the next day. I actually took some sleeping pills to pass out so I wouldn't have to go through the agony of waiting for my letter to be posted (big mistake-- apparently they cause restless leg syndrome for me, oh god). Since Minnesota is our top choice I am more obsessively checking my partner's application status than the rest of mine (Comm at University of Denver, American Studies at Iowa and Bowling Green State). On the positive side, its def helping me with my DietBet challenge! I can barely eat anything I'm so anxious.
  8. I'm pursuing a PhD because I want to know more. I like reading, writing, discussing, having my mind broken down and built back up. I don't think I've romanticized it much...it's true it will be difficult, and it's true I may struggle to find a job afterwards...but I'm unhappy with the world and this is the avenue that would best utilize my skills and allow me to make an impact. I also think academia can use more queer/impoverished/neurodivergent/non-men than it currently has, and I'm all of the above. I want to make academia more accessible and I want to be a thorn in the foot of any abusive crapbag seeking tenure. hehe.
  9. Oh jeez yeah, if you know how to stretch your money then Athens is definitely pretty reasonable. & I felt much the same! Feels great getting acceptances so early-- definitely takes a lot of the pressure off. I can't sleep because I want to keep reading about the Twin Cities!
  10. @DBear I think it would be tight but definitely doable! considering I could easily find a lot of 2 bedrooms for between 7-800, it's possible you could spend as little as $400ish on rent/utilities. The area around campus is AWESOME, and there's lot of cheap food/drink options. I spent a week there for a national forensics tournament and really enjoyed it.
  11. A friend of mine just heard tonight he was also admitted to the Communication Studies (rhetoric track) PhD program at the University of Minnesota. Very happy for him. Send good vibes that something comes through for my partner!
  12. NICE! Congrats! Maybe there's a fellowship deadline they want to nominate you for? If you end up there, you have to eat at Bagel Street Deli as often as possible!
  13. Unless it's been discussed with accessibility services or the aid/student has talked with you, treat the student as you would any other student. If accommodations are requested by any of the above or the professor for the course, be flexible as needed.
  14. University of Minnesota is a very big (spans across both Minneapolis and St. Paul and has 30k-ish students). Public transit (light rail) runs RIGHT BY Ford Hall, where Communication Studies is housed (along with Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies and feminist studies and another I can't remember.) Comm Studies has an entire floor to itself and there's 3 or 4 different offices for grad students and a really nice lounge with big windows looking over campus. The student center has a bar! Bathrooms are nice n clean (important to me as my current school's bathrooms are ATROCIOUS and I practically live on campus during the school year). We toured the department before we decided to apply. We had an hour meeting with the chair of the department and it went great-- he's very friendly and very helpful, he knows what he's talking about but doesn't condescend to you. When I finished that meeting I knew I was going to apply because I liked him so much. We also got lunch with a couple grad students who were open about the program with us, and then we met with another faculty member who's interests line up with my husband's. After that, we got to sit in on a class with a professor who has long been a powerhouse in rhetoric and it was awesome-- definitely a pretty leftist vibe (great for me) and the atmosphere of the classroom was great-- supportive of pushing each other and challenging each other, which is the kind of environment where I thrive. I was able to meet with several grad students during our visit and other than the meeting with the chair, this was the most invaluable part of my trip. I think it's good when the grad students are slightly bitter but not miserable, and generally have good things to say about the department but aren't overflowing with "everything is perfect" because then I feel like it's more a sales pitch than an honest conversation (how NCA's grad fair felt at times, to be honest). All admitted students at the UMN receive funding, which I also appreciated about my visit-- the funding is competitive and cost of living in the cities isn't horrible for how great they are. I LOVE the Twin Cities. They're big, but not overwhelming. Almost every band/artist you want to see will come through Minneapolis. Great food, great social justice work happening there, great architecture and a strong identity (also important to me after living in a city where it feels like everyone is in purgatory waiting to move on to something better). (forgive typos and grammar issues-- on new phone and autocorrect is annoying)
  15. If the school you go to has any kind of accessibility/disability services, you can get reasonable accommodations! I have very bad generalized anxiety and depression and potentially autism. I had a few rough weeks during my Master's program, but being communicative about my needs helped-- I never saw accessibility services but I wish I had. When I teach I get emails from them saying things like "this student needs more time to complete work" or "this student can't do presentations in class" and I have to follow the accommodations or the university could be sued.
  16. Great idea! Your research sounds very interesting, especially the F2F messages. I bet there will be some interesting results. I'm currently writing a book chapter with a couple faculty members at the university where I adjunct. We're doing a visual analysis of the new Black Panther comics written by Ta Nehisi Coates and illustrated by Brian Stelfreeze. I'm hoping to do disability rhetoric wherever I end up, especially regarding ableism (esp the erasure of cognitive and developmental disabilities) in the neurodiversity movement, social justice movements, and political rhetoric-- how capitalism is inherently ableist and maligns people who can't/won't be productive in terms of $$$$. PUMPED
  17. I got in!!! My husband checked my status while I was asleep and had to wake me up!
  18. Accepted to the University of Minnesota's Communication Studies program. Rhetoric!
  19. Yep-- RSTC is (weirdly) a different program with almost no overlap as far as I know!
  20. Congrats Chiquitica! That's great!
  21. I submitted mine November 28th! On paper I was not the strongest applicant (p weak GRE and below average undergrad GPA) but I have teaching experience and I think I fit with the direction the rhetoric folks want to move and I have a lot of passion/eagerness to study so I'm hoping it's not a "wtf you are not ready what were you thinking [rejection]" and more a "you seem cool, come on ova! [admit!]" four of my friends have applied and their applications haven't changed either and so I have no idea gah
  22. Minnesota updated my status to "decision made" but no letter yet! I was at the dentist when I read it and have been shaking so bad they had to pause several times for me to calm down. Gahhh!
  23. I saw that! Congrats! Purdue, right? That's awesome. Good luck. Hope to hear more for all of us soon. Woof.
  24. Yes! I applied via the rhetoric track. My husband also applied (critical media) and it hasn't updated for him either. Hope you get some news soon! I'm having trouble falling back asleep or eating now! Also rofl I wish I'd applied abroad...
  25. My application status at my #1 dream school (university of minnesota) just switched to "final review" on the website- should know in a day to a week ? regardless of the decision at least this SUFFERING will end hahaha
