Interviewing with 16 Faculty Members over 2 Days???
Cookie replied to ACM88's topic in Interviews and Visits
I just looked at my visit schedule for this weekend, 8 profs, 30 minutes each... I feel you! This is what Im gonna do: the ones that I really like (good research fit, and I have contacted), I read representative papers and recent papers, and whatever on the website. I just read the research interests for the rest of them. Good luck to both of us! -
Seriously, you are amazing This is what I am gonna do!!! Thanks!

Thanks everyone, great advices! I dont see myself wearing boots with dress pants though. Can black flats and black tights look ok and keep me warm? I plan to wear a trenchcoat over my pant suit.

I'm visiting a school this weekend and it looks like there will be snow... Coming from the South, where I see snow like 2 days a year, I don't know what formal / semi-formal outfit will work for cold weather up North. The coordinator said in the email that it would be a lot of walking. Please help!!!

They have 4 visit dates for Chemistry: Feb 8 and 22, Mar 8 and 22, so I would say yes.

10 minute undergraduate presentation
Cookie replied to Monochrome Spring's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
A good rule of thumb I go by is 1 slide per minute. The amount of time spent on each section really depends on the project itself. Personally, I make the slides first, then practice the talk with a friend before making any adjustment on rate of speech or content on each slide. The bulk of your time should be on your experiment and the results. One minute is enough to talk about implications and future work. Then practice a lot! Good luck. Applied to: UT, WashU. Notre Dame. UIUC Admissions Decisions Out

UIUC is amazing! Congrats -
Talk to your mentor and express your concerns. Unless she gives you research work that allows you to learn and build up research experience, there is no reason to stay. Please dont double post. And as you already know, WRONG THREAD.

American Employment Rules
Cookie replied to phonology_rocks's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
This is not correct. There is no problem for an F-1 visa holder to get married to an US citizen. It is generally a one-step process in which you file I-485, I-765 (for EAD), and I-131 (for Advanced Parole) and your spouse files I-130 simultaneously. After USCIS receives your complete file and fee, an EAD of one year will be sent to you along with other documents while your application is being processed. Not yet, Im also nervous as hell. I have 3 visit weekends back to back starting from the end of Feb, so I really hope to hear about others' experience too! @UBackwardsChemistry: I love that. Helpful and entertaining! Thanks! Applied to: UT, Rice, UPenn, Carnegie, UCSD. WashU. Notre Dame. UWashington.

A chemical engineering prof at my alma mater spoke highly of CMU research. But it is all about research fit at this point, since you got in amazing programs (Congrats!!!). I vote for better fit --> UPenn. Applied to: UT, WashU. Notre Dame. UWashington.

What kind of research are you interested in doing for your PhD? if it is not closely related to biology, I would spend that time/effort for research. Would you be able to have your independent project? Big or small, the learning involves in planning and carrying out your own research would really help shape your interests and prepare you for graduate work. An honor thesis would be a nice addition. I would add to take some stats courses.

As far as i know, if you apply to any math/engineering programs, you are expected to get 90%ile or above in Quant. 153 in Q is very low. Even though many schools dont have any harsh cutoffs, your low Q score would speak negatively of your math skills. You should retake it. Here is the link to the GRE diagnostic service that shows you what kind of questions you got wrong on your test. http://www.ets.org/s/gre/diagnostic_service/index.html Applied to: UT, WashU.
