Hi! I got rejected from Western MPH a few weeks ago. I have a 3.96 GPA, I have many extracurriculars and a lot of public health related volunteer experience (service trip, homeless shelter, food bank), I have 3 years of research assistant experience at a TO hospital, I have several first-author and co-author publications in cancer research and about 6 abstract publications/conference presentations. I also applied to MMASc in Global health systems and got accepted to that. Does anyone know if my rejection might have been related to the fact that I applied to MMASc - I know that they are trying to expand that program so I wonder if that might be why.

That's super odd, you have great stats and experiences!!! Did you apply to other MPH programs as well? I'm sure a MMASc in global health systems will be just as rewarding though! Don't let the rejection get you down!!!

The same thing happened to me as well! But at Waterloo. I thought it may have been due to the fact that its online MPH program was just very competitive this year as a result of COVID, but I had a suspicion they may be wanting to to fill up their newer and less popular MHI program (which I got into, and the program is in the same faculty).

Hi there. I'm really sorry to hear about that. You have AMAZING stats and I can understand the situation may be a frustrating. From an email conversation last year with the department, I was told they reserve half the seats for people with immense public health experience such as yourself and half the seats usually go to new undergrads with minimal experience. Not sure about the reason for your refusal into the MPH program, however I think that the MMASc program will be quite rewarding if you choose to accept that offer :)

What was your undergrad major?

Super weird! I figured too that it might have just been a super competitive pool of applicants, but I didn't think MPH at Western was super competitive. I go to UW and the MHI is on the smaller side, so that very well may be the reason

Thank you! Oh, that's super interesting. I wish I could call and ask why I got rejected LOL.

Thank you! I actually only applied to Western for MPH, and I also applied to Mac Global health, since I only wanted to apply to one year programs. I think MMASc will be good if I end up doing that!

Did you apply to the MMASc program separately or did you check it off as "yes" in the original MPH program application?

Does anyone still have their Ottawa MPH "under evaluation"? I'm a student who got accepted to UW MPH and Western MPH but I'm curious about Ottawa's admission rate. Thank you :)

It could be that they didn't like your letter of intent and/or your references. Or perhaps your stats course wasn't to their liking. You should go over these things with someone you trust to see what they think. Sometimes it could even be where you're from. Like maybe they already accepted too many from your area.

That makes sense! I'm happy to share mine if you want to compare or take a read.

Great thanks for the info, that makes sense.

Are you planning to go to Brock? Have you heard anything about the program from someone who did it? I havent been able to find a lot of people talking about it

Yes, I decided last minute to accept my Brock offer! Do you plan on attending? I haven't heard much at all, sadly. I'm mainly choosing it due to its relatively low cost, and since it's online, I can work while attending.
