Congratulations! It's crazy you've been accepted to an ivy like Brown but not CUNY? Applications really are so random I also want to [selfishly] ask if you know anything about Austin? I have a feeling all the acceptances have been released, but I know (from lurking lmao) that they've rolled out decisions within the span of a few days in past years

And I feel pretty inadequate academically anyway... i never once believed i could get into grad school and this insecurity shows in my very average application. Though I know UIUC and CUNY are most likey gone and I have ticked them off my list already, not having a rejection letter leads you into brief moments of hope (dangerous!). UIUC never publishes anything in the way of a waitlist and yet takes months to reject a person. CUNY usually does acceptances and rejections within the span of a week but they are defying their own pattern this time. This pattern-defying behaviours of certain schools lead you into odd beliefs. They should just send the rejection letters (the ones they are absolutely sure to reject) along with the acceptances. Hurting feelings is not even an issue in this case. It is so much easier to send mass rejection mails--hardly takes any time. Unless they are writing personalized rejection letters (which they may for some people), I am sure sending off 200 automated mails doesn't take much work. I didn't apply to UIUC nor CUNY so I don't know anything about the programs there ? That said, you can send the program coordinator an email to see if they have released the result! This round should be less competitive than last year so it should probably take them less time to decide who to admit!

I suspect it might have to do with the timing of my application (right before the deadline, as opposed to a month in advance like the person on this thread who was accepted). Could be a fit issue too, they don't have anyone in my precise area of research. Hmm, I can't glean any info from Austin's acceptance letter, but I suspect that they have not sent out all the acceptances yet, based on the fact that my funding offer was clearly tailored to me rather than generic (different funding for internationals, I guess). Also, some acceptances to the program were posted before mine. Edited February 11, 2022 by Submarina OperaGhost 1

Even if they are not willing to let on much about how adcomms work, their tone might do the job! And it's not only about competitiveness I feel--they have accepted quite a few people who work on medieval literature which could mean they are trying to admit more students for that subfield... After covid many departments have narrowed down their specialisations. But these are just conjectures and the quality of application (the ws and sop) trumps everything else and those who have got in have put together some really really impressive applications! How many more to go? They have already sent out all acceptances and waitlists, right? It's been a week since CUNY decisions started trickling in. Can I safely conclude now that since I have heard nothing from them, CUNY is a rejection for me? A little certainty is all I am looking for at this stage! I don’t have exact information as to whether all notifications have been sent out, unfortunately. I assume that all acceptances have gone out, though, because it seems backwards to let people know that they’re on a waitlist before you fill up the cohort. You know? An important detail was that decisions are made based on speciality distribution. So, there’s a chance that your speciality is lagging a bit behind. You know? This tells me that the waitlist order is arbitrary. You can be at the top, but if the person who declines their offer is not in your speciality, that spot won’t go to you. There are eight programs that I have yet to officially hear from, but five of them have sent out interviews or acceptances already, so I’ve scratched them off my list. I think I have four real possibilities: CUNY and the three remaining. Hard times! 1

And yes, you need to be mad to send out waitlists before you have sent out acceptances. At least, this evening, CUNY cannot destroy my peace. However, I must really start preparing for a shutout... I’m not sure if the information I’ve provided applies to comp lit. Those were the details given in the letter I was sent. I think holding on to hope is always a good thing. I thought I was completely out of the running, but I kept positive thoughts and manifested good news, and I received a small glimmer of hope yesterday evening. Nothing is guaranteed for me, but I’m staying positive. Stay positive, friends. I was accepted too, didn't apply to rhetoric but that's what got me interested in the English program. I am seriously considering it if they can match my funding packages from other schools (well, we'll see). Rejection from Yale. Man, all the rejections submitted seemed brutal. I don't feel terrible about mine because it wasn't a super great fit and I have other acceptances, but did yall see those rejections handed to people who had alumni write recommendations with perfect GPAs and fit? And also the person with the undergrad and masters ivies? Sheesh. Who on earth even got in? PlacingJane1994 1
miniqueerthingy Posted February 11, 2022 Posted February 11, 2022 Heyy, long time lurker here. I applied to the combined PhD program in Gender Studies and English at Yale. And seeing the rejections for Yale English PhD has scared me a bit, because I am not even close to the credentials that those rejected from Yale have. However, I was wondering, when would the combined Phd (Gender plus English) send their decisions, and how does it work (Do both departments have to accept us?). The combined phD would, I guess, be a bit more (or a lot more) competitive than a single subject Phd. I also applied to Brown, and I am trying to prepare myself for a rejection from Brown. Area: Trans/Queer studies plus postcolonial/Decolonial studies. Hard times! 1

I didn’t apply, but I know that they receive probably the most applications in any cycle. Just luck of the draw, so to speak. What is your area of interest?
