alvin Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 A yes from UCSD PhD (IS), no from Stanford. Anybody's got a reply from UCSD? Good luck to everybody who is waiting! Melchior 1
BachRocksMySocks Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 If it helps, I live about 5 hours' drive from Cornell and the letter was postmarked February 10th. Well I hope you get an acceptance call instead! This is strange - I have not been rejected or accepted to Cornell. Has anyone heard if they are on a wait list or anything like that? I would rather just be rejected than be in limbo.
composerette Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Hello everyone! I am new on here - a composer waiting to hear back PhD/DMA results. Any composers hear from NYU GSAS yet?

I would rather just be rejected than be in limbo. I'm on the wait list for Cornell's musicology program; the letter came by post about a week and a half ago. I emailed Neal Zaslaw to restate my strong interest in the program, etc., and he wrote back saying that seven people have been accepted for three spots (out of more than 70 applicants!) with a short wait list after. You should probably contact him or someone else in the department, since it sounds like decisions have gone out and yours may have gotten lost. Best of luck!

BachRocksMySocks Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Thanks for this news. I live in Chicago which has notoriously terrible postal service, so perhaps it did get lost. Eek! I just checked the website, auto-complete in my browser put the wrong address! Whoops! Guess I am smart enough to be accepted to Princeton but not smart enough to fill out my own damn address... composser Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) ... and he wrote back saying that seven people have been accepted for three spots (out of more than 70 applicants!) with a short wait list after. Hmmm... for composition they were offering only 1 spot to 80 applicants. What the hell !!! I read someone got accepted for PhD/ Composition at Columbia. This probably means I'm out of the game since I've not received any e-mail yet. Damn it... Still thanks for posting it as it makes the waiting a little easier. Edited February 24, 2011 by composser
diber Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Any more musicology results?! I'm going nuts!

xylogirl10 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Any more musicology results?! I'm going nuts! Pitt selected their first round of applicants a few weeks ago (I was not selected). Sorry, that is all I know. Good luck!
snes Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I haven't heard anything besides Cornell either. I think NYU GSAS notifies later than others anyway.
musichistorygeek Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 (edited) Any more musicology results?! I'm going nuts! I got into the MM program in Music History at UW-Milwaukee. No funding, sadly, but it's a good program with a POI who shares many of my research interests. This is also my only acceptance for music so far; everyone else seems to be taking their sweet time in getting back to us! ...and I just got an email from Madison's music department. JSK Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 ...and I just got an email from Madison's music department. Still waiting from them... Only heard from my ultimate backup so far: CCM.
diber Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Okay, I contacted Penn today and all their waitlists/accepts have already been notified. I'm really bummed, since I really thought i was going to get in. But c'est la vie... At least I have my safe school, wh isn't too shabby. I'm assuming that the other 2 Ivies I applied to have already made their decisions and that they don't include me.

Did they say if that was for all of their programs (theory, history, comp, and anthro) or just historical? Just out of curiosity since I applied there, too!
BachRocksMySocks Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Did they say if that was for all of their programs (theory, history, comp, and anthro) or just historical? Just out of curiosity since I applied there, too! Even though departments typically divide the number of applicants they accept into a certain number of discrete categories (ex: out of 12 offers, they expect 8 to accept, with 3 historians, 3 theorist, 1 ethnomusicologist, and 1 composer), they decisions are almost always made at the same time and as a result, candidates are notified at the same time. I think it's wishful thinking to expect that just because a theorist has been accepted that his or her acceptance does not have any bearing on you as a composer, historian, or ethnomusicologist. It may be the case that while trying to find their quotient of historians, a department determines they want a particular candidate earlier on, and she might be notified ahead of a few other candidates. However, this is usually only going to be a matter of 1 or 2 days before the other candidates are notified. Admissions committees tend to move pretty quickly, particularly since they know that peer institutions will be making competing offers. Also, professors everywhere know about this website and use it as a tool to determine when they should announce decisions or speed things up. For example, if Harvard has made decisions in Art History and someone announces it on thegradcafe, you can bet that people at other peer institutions are glued to this website so that the morning someone posts their decision from Harvard, they can send out offers later that afternoon or the next day. I know this as a fact since I am currently an employee at one of the country's top 5 music departments. Oh, the age of technology!
snes Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Interesting, BachRocksMySocks. Anyone heard anything and I mean anything from Brown????

Ayiti Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 (edited) Okay, I contacted Penn today and all their waitlists/accepts have already been notified. I'm assuming that the other 2 Ivies I applied to have already made their decisions and that they don't include me. Can't believe I only found this site today. UGH. I made it to the final round for ethno, an on campus interview, on February 3rd. It was me and one one other candidate, and he just blew me out of the water. I knew when I left that it wasn't happening. I definitely made some mistakes (this was my first on-campus interview), and I wish I could have practiced on another school before going to Penn, but as you said diber, c'est la vie. I'm still in undergrad and the other guy was a little further along in the process, so it seems fair. Of course, Penn was one of my top choices, so I was incredibly bummed when I finally got the email. But, true to form, the email Tim Rommen sent was absolutely lovely, very encouraging. There are a couple programs where I firmly believe that if you have the chops to get in there, I think you would have to be on crack not to go. This is definitely one of them. I've also gotten into UC Davis (I couldn't make the big weekend visit, or else I'd be there now. I'm really bummed, my prof wouldn't move my midterm today, so I think my funding opportunities are pretty much defunct with them), as well as BU and UMich Ann Arbor, all for musicology/ethno. I plan to go to Mich's accepted students weekend, and I'm going to wait and see what BU can give me funding wise... Still waiting desparately to hear from Columbia, NYU, and Harvard. Any news from them?????? Edited February 28, 2011 by Ayiti

Eislinn Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I've also gotten into UC Davis (I couldn't make the big weekend visit, or else I'd be there now. I mean, at this point I'm assuming I didn't get in, but I sure would like to hear a real answer. Same goes for UPenn.
Ludwig von Dracula Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Eislinn, I have not heard anything from Penn either. But I haven't tried contacting them as a previous poster did. Disappointed to hear that I didn't get an interview--I met Tim Rommen at SEM and read his book shortly afterwards. Would have loved to work with him. Oh well...there's always a postdoc. Ayiti, according to the results, somebody in ethno has received an acceptance from Harvard. It happened more than a week ago. I applied to 7 programs (2 in Canada and 5 in the States). So far I've gotten 4 acceptances, but only one is guaranteeing funding, and it's Canadian. The American universities are both state institutions, though well-respected. But I'm not sure what to do if they don't offer funding. I can't afford to pay $20,000 or $40,000 in tuition, even if it's only for the first year. The 3 I haven't heard from are private/Ivies (including my top choices, which is why I feel a little sad) and I'm likely out of the running now. But at least I have options, for which I'm thankful.

Close friend at BU who is close to those making the decision says that decisions are very close, but not all out yet. Best of luck! Joel
Ayiti Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 So looking at the results board, it looks like accepts and waitlists have gone out for Harvard last week and Columbia this past weekend. Has anyone heard anything at all from NYU?
Melchior Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 Does anyone, by any chance at all, know about how many apps IU typically gets yearly for their musicology PhD?
