I think for me it comes down to distance from home, living cost, and school reputation. I'm from Calgary so Edmonton is close to home if I ever wanna drive down to see family and friends. Edmonton is more affordable compared to Vancouver (but I would have been willing to pay the price if I got into UBC), and UofA is just overall a more reputable school and ranked higher and I've heard good things about the program (not to say SFU's program isn't amazing also, I could've sworn SFU is the only accredited program in Canda). Hope that helps!

Thank you! I emailed Suzanne the other day to ask a few questions about the program, and she let me know! It got lost somewhere in my inbox, though. Offical offers haven't come out yet .

Here are my stats:

- BPH graduating this year; honestly not too sure how to convert my GPA, but I think a 4.0

- 8 months of paid research experience (no pub)

- 8 months volunteering as an RA focusing on improving the cardiovascular health of marginalized peoples

- Capstone project on Indigenous health

- Exec of a few clubs in undergrad 

- 3 stats courses the all being somewhere in the A range

- one academic reference and one professional and I think my LOI helped!

Ohh, do you mind sending me the rankings, if that's okay! Also, UofA is also CEPH accredited! It's one of the reasons why I'm stuck between them haha. I appreciate the reply!

I studied at SFU for undergrad, and I currently live in Vancouver. I am going to U of A too, but that's because I want to switch my environment then come back as my family is here. Vancouver is great in terms of weather, and transit is definitely great if you live a little further off campus (even though many of us complain about it). We have frequent busses and a skytrain. The city is smaller in general, and everything is connected. Of course, that comes with expensive living. The rent here will be more compared to Edmonton. It will continue to rise as more people come, and right now, I think a bedroom is at least 1650 (at least for my friend). The price will vary where you are located. Closer to campus will definitely be higher. 

In terms of ranking, U of A is ranked 4th in Canada compared to SFU that is ranked 12th. I studied Health Sciences at SFU, so I know the faculty quite well, and the professors are super awesome. We rank on a 4.33 scale, and it's a huge disadvantage when it comes to grades. Many students complain about this, but I'm sure if you do well, I don't think it affects you at all. That said, it really depends on many factors for you. Hope that helps!!

The 4.33 scale is only a disadvantage if your original school was on a 4.0 scale and is being converted to the 4.33 scale. If you're going from 4.33 to a 4.0 scale, it tends to benefit you. I go to UNBC right now, so all As and A+ grades are considered a 4.0 versus a 4.0 and 4.33, so your GPA is "boosted" compared to the 4.33 scale.

In my opinion, I think 4.33 is not the end of the world. Many of us just prefer to have percentages along with the system because the 4.33 scale (letter grades) does not truly represent what we got in class. I had a class where I scored 89% but only received an A- (would be A for UBC) because of how the class is graded. In SFU business school, some professors curve down, so students with like 79% can get a C+ even if the percentage is supposed to be at a higher letter grade. If you do well though, it's not really a huge issue. I know people who got into law and med school despite of what we used at SFU, as long as you work hard, it's fine.

Working hard is definitely the plan! And yeah, it's really weird to find out that SFU doesn't include percentages in the final grade, it definitely would help for post-grad, but I really appreciate your insight!

I got accepted to SFU on March 24th. My GPA is a 3.53 and I come from a health sciences background. I have two qualitative public health research projects under my belt as a research assistant. I'm in honours so I got to do an honours thesis. I work as a clinical assistant at a clinic and volunteer at the hospital as well and I'm president of a cultural club on campus  just a brief summary but hope it helps

Hey! I applied to McMaster and queens U for MPH and looking at Reddit and the forums many of the applicants have received updates on the status of their application. But I have yet to heard back from Queens. I was wondering if they send a formal rejection or if anyone else is waiting on their results?
