space-cat Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Which means that personally I'm not optimistic, and not bothered. I'm in the same boat. They're the last response I'm waiting on, so it's really just a matter of closure.
Le Fleur Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Is the person who posted admission to the Phd at IU a member? If so what subdivision are you? Full funding for how many years? Sorry for being nosy.
anthroapp11 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Me too. Stanford's faculty had probably the "stretchiest" fit of any school I applied to. Let me move on with my life, Stanford! I'm in the same boat. They're the last response I'm waiting on, so it's really just a matter of closure.
Orzai Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Is anyone remotely optimistic about Stanford, FWIW? Since getting another offer from a department that's just a perfect fit for me, I've revised my estimate of how well I'd actually fit with Stanford's faculty. Downwards. Which means that personally I'm not optimistic, and not bothered. I may have got a shaman and some Mexicatholic family to do some work/prayer to get me in and forced myself to be optimistic. Though, the more I learn about Chicago the better it sounds.
gonenative Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 If I had seen the grad handbook notes on committees (2 area, 2 topic specialists), I'd have been significantly less confident from the outset. OTOH there seem to be grad students whose projects are far enough from anything faculty are working on to suggest they interpret this quite flexibly... Me too. Stanford's faculty had probably the "stretchiest" fit of any school I applied to. Let me move on with my life, Stanford!
gonenative Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I may have been there... I may have got a shaman
gonenative Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 That really depends on the shaman That may be kind of creepy.
laurissimo Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 First of all, congrats to all the acceptances! It's such a nail-biting experience... Wanted to see if any other archaeology people applied to Boston university's arch. Department or had heard anything... As for Columbia and Harvard, it sounds like acceptances have been sent out?
claypatterns Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Thank you for the valuable information, kateow! And guess what, I just checked my email and found out I indeed got into MAPSS, with one-third funding. I'm seriously considering the offer. I'll look over some more information and PM you if I have any questions. Its very nice of you to offer help to us anxious souls! Generally, the MA theses are not fieldwork based. In most cases, this meant utilizing existing data or critiquing previous research. Some students finish their theses after 9 months (so in June), but I think most ended up finishing in August (I didn't graduate until December, but I had fieldwork that kept me busy over the summer). You don't have to go in with a thesis proposal, but they do recommend that you start drafting one just after your first quarter (so, in December). Ideally, if you've developed a research project for your statement of purpose, applying to PhD programs, it shouldn't be too hard to start thinking about what the first step of that research might look like, and make that your MA topic. If anyone has questions about MAPSS (or my experience doing an MA before the PhD), I'm perfectly willing to discuss it--feel free to PM me.
persiandoc Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Hey friend, I'm very happy your MIT interviews went well. I'm so looking forward to hearing your offer of admission. If I were you, I'd prefer MIT to Chicago. It's a wonderful multifaceted program, We'll have champagne together, To our friend's success with MIT (cheers) Hey Persiandoc! Congratulations on your wonderful news at NYU. I am delighted to hear that you have got the acceptance you want. That's awesome. My interview at MIT went really well. The committee were pretty nice and positive. However, looking at the results section, it seems that a great application and interview doesn't ncesarily count for anything so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I hope either MIT or Chicago come through, otherwise it could be another year of apps.... Anyway, have a drink on me for your great success with NYU ;-)
Apegirl Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Has anyone heard anything from Duke or UC Davis for evolutionary anthro? I saw someone posted that Duke was sending out acceptance notices last week but haven’t seen anything on the results board.
new mexico Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 to those accepted to master's program in anthropology or archaeology at University of Oxford, have you been notified yet concerning a college decision or funding? i'm still waiting on a college decision, and i suppose the deadline for a college to make a decision (at least for my app cycle) is today...I hope i hear soon!
Le Fleur Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I didn't apply to Davis but I haven't heard anything from Duke either. When I log in it still says "submitted" Has anyone heard anything from Duke or UC Davis for evolutionary anthro? Cashmere Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I didn't apply to Davis but I haven't heard anything from Duke either. When I log in it still says "submitted" Yeah, same thing here. Still waiting on Duke Evo. Anth. Maybe I'm just deluding myself with wishes and dreams, but I feel like there are enough of us here on the forums that we ought to have seen a few results posted if acceptances really went out earlier this week. Hmm...
anthro.fish Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) I was accepted to the MPhil in Material Anthropology and Museum Ethnography. This is a two year research degree, leading to the DPhil in Anthropology (an additional two years). My application was processed with the November deadline apps. Neither myself, nor my friend, has received anything from a college. Fingers crossed for funding New Mexico. P.S. Where did you get the information about the college decision deadlines associated with application cycles? to those accepted to master's program in anthropology or archaeology at University of Oxford, have you been notified yet concerning a college decision or funding? i'm still waiting on a college decision, and i suppose the deadline for a college to make a decision (at least for my app cycle) is today...I hope i hear soon! Nessie Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Yeah, same thing here. Still waiting on Duke Evo. Anth. Hmm... Who did you guys apply to work with? From the email I received (in response to an inquiry), it sounded as though it would depend on who your POI was as to whether you've heard or not yet. That might not be right, but that's the impression I got...
will t Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 First of all, congrats to all the acceptances! It's such a nail-biting experience... Wanted to see if any other archaeology people applied to Boston university's arch. Department or had heard anything... As for Columbia and Harvard, it sounds like acceptances have been sent out? I also applied to BU, for a masters in Geoarch. Nerve-wracking to have heard from almost every other program I applied to! My sense from talking to a few of their grad students and profs yesterday is that decisions are still one or two weeks off.
moraurora Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Hi all! anybody heard from JHU? Hi, I know someone who has been accepted... But I don't know what this means for the other applicants.
zoe13 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Probably it does not mean something promising, that is for sure. Thanks Hi, I know someone who has been accepted... But I don't know what this means for the other applicants.
persiandoc Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Don't worry Zoe13 at all. I don't mean to be arrogant but I personally believe I'm going to be admitted. That's much too idiotic to consider myself as a reference but my gut feeling says you shouldn't begin to fret at this stage. Actually I planned on withdrawing my application before the decisions are made. I don't promise but I may spy some recondite info for you. Stay tuned, is my biggest advice to you. You'd hate me if you go back and review my posts before I got accepted to NYU. Fingers crossed on your JHU acceptance Probably it does not mean something promising, that is for sure. Thanks
zoe13 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Thank you Persiandoc. You are such a moral booster! Congrats on NYU acceptance by the way. It is perfect, not only the school but the city as well.
