HistoryGrizzly Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Thanks for the head's up on Michigan. It's my number one choice, though it's quite a bit of a long shot. I'd love to be able to stay close to home AND there's a whole mess of profs there in my field.
North Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 For those of you who've been accepted to Berkeley, what is your field?
andixmas Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Has anybody heard anything from Chicago? Called them? Received some kind of notification? My understanding from friends currently in the department is that things are going slower than usual, and as of last Friday they weren't ready with decisions.

I was just curious if the offers they've made so far have all come from the same field or fields.

It's a great department. If I might ask, do you already have an M.A.?
thepoorstockinger Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 It's not like I have a good feeling about it, but have any Americanists heard from Columbia yet?
Henry Hudson Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 U MIchigan History dept says... meeting this week they expect to send out emails the following week.

We've probably hit some of the same schools.
nervousnelly Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 It's not like I have a good feeling about it, but have any Americanists heard from Columbia yet? I haven't heard anything yet, either.
barricades Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I have just been wait-listed by Yale. E-mail directing me to a letter on the application site. Thay wrote that "In general, we hope to know shortly after April 15 whether it will be possible to admit additional students to the Department." So I guess I'll be writing an email saying they can remove me from the waitlist. Good luck to all!
EricaMarie Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 (edited) It's not like I have a good feeling about it, but have any Americanists heard from Columbia yet? I haven't, and I've been checking the website too. Nothing's changed. Edit: In terms of Yale, I just got an email linking me to the website. First rejection of the 2011 season. I knew it was coming, but it still sucks. Edited February 14, 2011 by EricaMarie

It's quite a nail-biting experience, really. I've been checking the websites obsessively (even though I swore that I wouldn't). What aspect of post-1945 Britain interests you? I'm slightly earlier (mid 19th to mid 20th). I'm interested in the rise in nationalism under the liberal state and the formation of external legitimacy through prison resistance within the empire.
Jeppe Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 So Columbia seems to have made their decisions. Have anyone heard from them via some other channel than through a potential adviser?
EricaMarie Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I haven't, no. And after this morning's rejection, I'm afraid to.. Although...Yale apparently wasn't the right place for me, because I'm not all that bummed about getting rejected. It sucks, yes, but I'm not nearly as upset as I thought I'd be...
Mertonian Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Regarding Columbia, there have been e-mails by the DGS, supervisors and administration. It seems they are done.
Iknownothing Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Just received my Yale rejection...I guess I'm not meant to be in an Ivy...that's OK, congrats to everyone who received acceptances.
modern Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Indeed, I received an official notification from Columbia some days ago. Waitlisted but invited to NYC for visiting weekend with some of the costs covered.
Jeppe Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Indeed, I received an official notification from Columbia some days ago. Waitlisted but invited to NYC for visiting weekend with some of the costs covered. Well, that sucks. Thanks for the info though!
North Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I applied to Boston College, WashU, Texas Austin, North Carolina, Illinois-UC, and Northwestern. I got rejections from Illinois and NW. I'm generally interested in the end of social democracy and the rise of neoliberalism under Margaret Thatcher. The bulk of my research has been on national identity, and specifically the challenges Britishness faced in the 1970s/80s. I'm interested in the linkage between British national identity and war, and I particularly enjoy studying the Falklands War of 1982 and the government and media's failed attempt to use the war to revamp Britishness in a post-imperial age.
qbtacoma Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Regarding Columbia, there have been e-mails by the DGS, supervisors and administration. It seems they are done. Hm. Nothing yet for me.
HistoryGrizzly Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 U MIchigan History dept says... meeting this week they expect to send out emails the following week. Ugh, I almost don't want to even know. I know it 's going to be a rejection (because it's where I want to go the most), and I feel like the longer I don't hear anything, the longer I can cocoon myself in a delusion of acceptance. Wow, I really have some sort of complex there.
TMP Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Well, that sucks. Thanks for the info though! Why? Anyone who gets waitlisted SHOULD be happy! Being waitlisted is better than being rejected outright. When I found out that I waitlisted last year, I couldn't stop smiling all day. AND Columbia's covering some of the cost... Waitlisted people don't get to visit until they've been accepted and offered travel reimbursement.

I think Jeppe might have been saying it sucks because the person got a decision already, not because they got waitlisted.
Jeppe Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) I think Jeppe might have been saying it sucks because the person got a decision already, not because they got waitlisted. Yes, this. If people had only heard through advisers and informal channels, I might still have a chance of receiving a positive decision. Given that both waitlisted and accepted candidates have heard through official channels by now, I can cross Columbia off my list Edited February 15, 2011 by Jeppe
