Joesh Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I just got my first acceptance letter directly to the PhD program at Purdue! and am going crazy I'm so excited!!! What do I do now? The letter said who my advisor was, but nothing along the lines of funding yet. Should I contact my advisor? Wait for him to contact me? When do I hear about funding? When should I set up a visit? I'd like to tour campus and stuff like that and see the labs. Sorry for the rambling!!! I need to take a deep breath, haha!
Bukharan Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 My sincere congratulations! I can only imagine how excited you must feel!
newms Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Congratulations! As I understand it, the department will contact you about funding (did the letter say they would contact you at a later date?), but you are free to ask. I think its perfectly fine for you to contact your advisor and introduce yourself (if you haven't been in contact before) and also to contact the department and ask if and when there is a visit weekend - perhaps they'll send you an email soon with information about that. If there isn't a visit weekend, you should arrange a visit if you can, to help you decide if you want to attend that school. Congrats again and all the best with your decision! communications13 1

It said nothing about a later date for funding information. They did mention about a convocation in August. Even though there is a visit weekend then I would like to visit before I accept the offer though. Also, THANKS! Edited January 18, 2011 by Joesh

It definitely makes sense to visit, if you can, before making a decision. I would recommend contacting the department to try to arrange a visit and you can ask them about funding as well. All the best!

Should I contact my advisor or the secretary of the department or the grad school office?
newms Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) Should I contact my advisor or the secretary of the department or the grad school office? I would contact the secretary of the department first about funding and visiting and see what they say. I think it would still be good to contact your advisor with an introductory email and to try to meet when you visit- I wouldn't mention funding initially with the advisor until after introductions, but that is just me. beanbagchairs Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Congrats! I am yet to get my first (optimist!) acceptance . Like everyone else mentioned, you should contact them about funding and introduce yourself to your future advisor!
Joesh Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) Thank you all for the kind replies and congratulations! I was able to get in contact with my advisor and we are going to set up a time to talk over the phone in the upcoming week. And don't worry - I'm sure it's only a matter of time before you all start hearing good news too! Edited January 23, 2011 by Joesh
