Who's the Austin admit? Congratulations! Guess that means I won't be getting an offer from them, but I guess I shouldn't complain as I already have some good options for the Fall. Anyone else apply and not get an acceptance from UT?

Update. One of my former faculty members told me that she knows of a student who was invited by Princeton for an interview. Princeton is out.

I got accepted into Boulder's MA program, and declined the offer. Hope one of you guys can take my place!

Also, Berkeley Classics is out it seems, as well as Penn Archaeology (don't remember the acronym).

Well, poo. I knew it was a long shot, anyway, but it was my first choice. Do you happen to know when they made the interview offers?

Eek. Guess I maybe didn't get into Boulder, then, if I haven't gotten an e-mail.

After that fairly long stretch of inactivity, it seems like a lot of results have been coming in today!

I'll ask about my former prof when the interviewee was invited by Princeton. I'm assuming sometime this past week if I had to guess.

It looks like rejections for Berkeley Classics have gone out, but not for AHMA. Correct?

(Though at this point, I'm happy enough with the news I've gotten that I don't think I'm going to be distraught when the no letter comes in.)

(Very) long time follower, first post.

I just got my first offer yesterday - UBC MA Classical Archaeology, with a follow up email today from Hector (Williams), the director of grad studies in the dept, stating that within a week or two (so end feb) that they'll be then making a financial offer.

If any of you have applied to UBC CNRS dept and have some questions I am happy to try help - currently finishing off my BA here in the dept.

Wow, there's a lot of UBC applicants in this thread! Thanks for the info, Batavi. I was admitted to the PhD program way back on Jan 12, and I've been on edge waiting for financial information ever since. I'd been told it would be late February as well, but that was at the beginning of the month and I've been addicted to checking my inbox for news. Are you considering attending? Odds are that I'll be heading there, as long as the financial offer is livable. Here's to hoping!

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the BA program? I'm really interested in how the department functions while encompassing both Religious Studies and Classics.

Congrats! Do you know if they've sent out *all* the acceptances to the archaeology program? I'm hoping not, but I figure they have...

Well, I applied to UBC because of Roger Wilson (who is my honours thesis supervisor) and I love Vancouver! However, I'm still waiting for nearly all my other schools but UBC may be an option I'll consider.

You should take a look at http://www.grad.ubc....-awards-funding for some funding possibilities.

My BA is in Classical Studies and I didn't take any religious studies courses. So I can't really give you feedback on that aspect, but the Latin courses I took were great; there are some amazing lecturers and Susanna (Braund) is absolutely fantastic to take Latin seminars with. I can't comment on the Greek side of things as I'm not far enough into that.

In the BA and most MA degrees the student has the choice of the courses they take - so you can choose which subjects your courses will focus on. For example, in theory, I could do the MA in classical archaeology without doing any courses on Greek history/arch, and focus purely on Roman arch and then take whatever other grad courses are of interest to me.

Is your PhD in Classics or in Religious Studies? Because the only degree in which the two are 'formally' tied together is in the MA ACRE. That being said, there are several courses (I believe 5-6 a year) specifically designed to unite both classics and religious studies. Keep in mind that course options change often and are sometimes on a 2 year cycle. http://cnrs.ubc.ca/index.php?id=12579 and http://cnrs.ubc.ca/index.php?id=12585 are the current courses that will probably be of interest to you.

Hope this is somewhat useful information. I'm happy to try help or answer more questions.

I honestly don't know if they have sent out all the acceptances to the ma arch programme.

I only received an general email from the graduate faculty and then an email today from the department itself.

Hector (grad director of the dept) said that there was "intense competition for the available spaces" and that they're working out the financial side of things.

If you don't mind me asking - what is your background like? (GPA, dig experience, languages, etc...)

The reason I'm interested in UBC is because I want to do interdisciplinary research, which is what I've been in contact with various faculty members about. UBC was recommended to me by my current advisor because of my interest in applying Roman/Hellenistic social science and culture to Hellenistic Jewish and Christian texts, and I've been told that I can do interdisciplanary coursework. I'm particularly interested in doing some work on Roman drama and satire in order to apply principles there to parables. Braund was actually specifically recommended to me, so it's great to hear your high opinion of her.

It was actually pretty useful to hear an insider's perspective of the department, so thank you very much for that. Of course, my final decision all comes down to funding.

Congratulations, and maybe I'll see you there come September.

I'm glad it helped. I'm obviously not the ideal person to ask though since I have no contact with the Religious Studies aspect. Susanna is HUGE in Roman satire (especially Lucan) so that works out well for your interests.

Once you've decided whether or not you'll attend and have other (general) questions, let me know.

Has anybody heard from Cornell or Bryn Mawr? I'm going to UCLA for an interview next week (excitement!) and really wish I knew the status of my other applications...

Anybody else also applying to these schools? Or also going to UCLA next week?

@ Guitan and @winter

Here is some of the latest info that I can give you about UBC... I ran into the grad director this morning and he told me that they were meeting later today to discuss the financial side of things.

Usually for MA students they aim to give TA'ships and scholarships which will provide around 10,000 CAD (essentially - this will cover your tuition if you are international student).

For the MA Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology they have only accepted 5 students. Both fields have sent out their acceptances.

I know 2 of the 5 people accepted (excluding myself) and these two will most defiantly go elsewhere. I'm still waiting for my other responses.

Guitan - that's good news for you as one of them is a NE arch student.

The department likes to have received a response by mid March so after that they can contact those on the waiting list.

That's great news, thanks for the info. The fact that MAs are probably getting something around 10K CAD is a good sign for admitted PhDs. That sets my mind at ease a bit, since I just got a horrendous funding offer from McGill.

Another UBC applicant; got an email recently that I got in. No word on funding yet, but almost certainly not going to accept unless they are able to top U of Toronto's funding offer. I also liked the fact that the DGS at U of Toronto called me and chatted to me for a bit, as well as communication over email. Seems like an awesome department for an MA.

Congrats with both acceptances! What MA did you get accepted to?

As for funding, I already posted what UBC tries to provide MA students, but I guess you'll have to wait 1-2 weeks for an official number.

If you're doing Classics or Ancient History - Toronto might be the better option (with the exception of Susanna Braund, Roger Wilson or the NE specialists here at UBC - don't know about the religious studies aspect though).

As for Archaeology, I'm actually not sure since I didn't look into Toronto for that.

Congrats again and if you do decide to go to Toronto, prepare for some ice cold winters (-20 Celsius)wink.gif

Anyone know anything about the PhD at Toronto/when news will be out? I'm guessing next month some time... what a heinous wait! Am an international student so don't fancy my chances, but one can dream. (Very excited at the prospect of Alison Keith, Victoria Wohl and Erik Gunderson all in one place!)

I was kindly rejected today by Colorado through email. Frankly, I am puzzled-- since when were they a primadonna program? I have been admitted to several other second tier programs and I don't know of any Colorado Classics PhDs in the field.
