PhdtoDig Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Has anyone made any final decisions!? If so, what did y’all choose!?

Sadly I don't expect to be able to make a final decision until at least mid-March, but I think I'm an outlier in that regard given I also applied for the funded MA programs. There are only a couple programs that could overmatch Michigan's offer, and all those are also very competitive slots, so right now I think I expect to decide on Michigan. But still, some time to go! I'm not sure being unable to decide for a while makes you an outlier! I'm leaning towards Princeton, but I've been told it's rude not to go to every school's visit days, make the connections, and hear their pitch, since these are future colleagues. I feel really bad, because I know how it feels to be waitlisted, but now my advisor has me worried about burning bridges if I don't give everyone an equal chance, and my visits have already been paid for. So I won't decide until last week of March the earliest, though I'll hopefully be able to narrow it down some sooner... voxanonyma and JMAurelius 1 1
fall2020apps Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Did anyone else hear from Princeton yet? I applied to the Philology track not PAW and I did not get an interview, but did they even interview for the Philology track? I thought I only saw PAW people on here get interviews, but please correct me if I am wrong. Do you think they might put people on waitlists who did not get interviews, because I got two waitlist offers and then eventually one acceptance without an interview. Additionally, is anyone here going to Brown's prospective weekend in mid March and if so did you get interviewed? One of my friends got the prospective weekend invite without an interview and another got a Zoom interview then an invite.

I applied to the pre-doctoral program, and wrote to their director yesterday asking for an update, just for some peace of mind. Princeton's is the only program that would probably exceed Michigan's offer overall, so I'd like to know how I've done there. I was not invited to an interview, but equally I'm not sure how relevant that is. I don't think there was a track for the program as I applied to it. And I was admitted to Michigan without an interview, so I think there is always hope for it!

Congratulations on the Michigan admit! 🎉 I know the programs at Cornell and Princeton come with a transfer to their respective PhD programs. Do you know if it's the same for Michigan? Can't find an answer on their website. voxanonyma 1

Yes, Michigan carries a transfer to the PhD the following year assuming adequate progress. I'm stoked from this honestly; I never expected to get in and it was the first program I heard from. I applied to Princeton for Philology and did get an interview invite in January (which was scheduled for February). Still haven’t heard back from them though. JMAurelius 1

That's good to know! I'm really glad there are more of these bridge programs now. As for Cornell, it looks like their graduate handbook still includes the transfer option for the Bridge MA. Maybe they just forgot to include it when they revised the other parts of their website. It would not be much of a "bridge" program without the transfer option! As a side project, I'm slowly (I mean very slowly 😅) working on a spread sheet of all the Classics Phd and funded MA/pre-doc programs in the US for future applicants. I hope to get it (mostly) done in time for the next application cycle. 🤞 So thanks for the confirmation that UMichigan has the transfer option! Speaking of UMich, on their website, it says the Bridge MA program is 3-semester long, which is rather unusual compared to all the other bridge programs I know of. Do you know if that's a typo or it's indeed a 3-semester program? Also do you know if their stipend covers both the academic year and the summer? Thanks!

I hope to hear from them in the next few weeks 😄 I think your initiative is a good one. If you haven't already seen these, they're what I referenced in previous cycles: https://livyarrow.org/2020/11/17/funded-mas-bridge-programs-and-pre-doctoral-fellowships-classics-and-related/ https://classicalstudies.org/awards-and-fellowships/awards-scholarships-and-fellowships-offered-us-classics-associations About Michigan, I was also confused by this at first. It's actually up to a a twelve-month program, but their semesters are not three full-length semesters. Their semesters within twelve months are: Fall (August - December), "Winter" (January - May), "Spring" (May - June), and "Summer" (July - August), and the program covers tuition for all four of those semesters as needed, but it seems their average is three of them (Fall - "Spring") to fulfill the degree requirements, which end with language exams in June, which you spend May studying for typically. The stipend is disbursed across those four semesters but it isn't fixed, meaning if you only need ten months to finish the program and receive your degree in June, you won't be eligible for summer funding, so most students opt to extend the degree even just formally through the summer (taking a modern language course, going abroad, etc.) to remain eligible for funding until August the next year, when they matriculate into the PhD program and become eligible for that stipend. Financially, right now it's a few thousand dollars below their PhD stipend, at about $34,000 annually, disbursed per my letter roughly: Fall $12,000, "Winter" $12,000, "Spring" $4,000, "Summer" $4,000. And there is also individual (non-competitive) travel funding for use during the year, and it sounds like there exist further sources of aid as needed. So it is quite substantial support, and I'm extremely thankful this has come through. I did hear from Princeton earlier today and unfortunately they did not admit me, but on the other hand this makes me feel a lot more like Michigan is where I'll go next year! JMAurelius 1
screwdriverfemme Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 Does anyone have any tips for recruitment visits? I'm attending a three-day virtual visit for my absolute top school tomorrow through Friday, and I feel like I have absolutely no idea what to expect. I've got three(!) individual meetings with faculty and am working on coming up with questions or conversation topics for all of them, I've got questions for my grad student meetings, I'm doing the readings for the classes I'll be visiting ... am I missing anything?? What kind of questions have y'all asked faculty in individual meetings?? voxanonyma 1
voxanonyma Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Has anyone on here heard anything about the RSI at Harvard? It's been radio silence from them. Not sure if they do interviews either.
canyoudigit Posted February 29 Posted February 29 Has anyone heard from Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology at Bryn Mawr or Classics at Cincinnati?
confusedmedievalist Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Some perspective that I think might be useful for people to know about waitlists. Between me and the 2 people I've met at visits so far, we're holding 12 spots at 6 different programs. That means 9 spots total WILL open up, and at some schools it will likely be that everyone accepted goes somewhere else, and every spot opens up. Idk if anyone else will find this as helpful/enlightening as I have, but I never knew it was like this and thought I would share. JMAurelius, lostinarcadia and voxanonyma 3

If you're talking about the interdisciplinary program at the Joukowsky, I am going to the prospective weekend! I did get interviewed, once by POI individually who is not on campus, and then the other time I had a zoom call with several other professors.

Classics is such a small field that this happens often. There's obviously no guarantee ever that the waitlist moves, but the chances are far better than the waitlist for undergraduate admissions. JMAurelius Posted March 3 Posted March 3 A friend of mine just heard from Princeton about being wait listed. It's just one person. So I don't recommend reading too much into it. Fingers crossed for everyone! 🤞🤞

I emailed them to ask for updates a few weeks ago. They told me that they had already contacted their shortlist. You can email Dr. Hatzaki and ask and she will let you know what the department decided in case you might have missed an email from them!
