lolopixie Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I saw in the Weekend Worriers post that there are a few people going to the CEA conference in March, and I was wondering if anyone else had plans for conferences this spring. I'll be at the PCA/ACA in San Antonio in April. I went to the conference in St. Louis last year, which was actually the first conference that I presented at, and had a great time. Just wondering what everyone else was up to.

I'm also organizing a graduate conference for March 19th (http://web.me.com/smoneil/BonasConference/Welcome.html). Last semester, I presented at the NYCEA Conference and the NCTE Convention, and last June I presented at the ANZSA Conference in Sydney Australia (I'm a sucker for a good fun conference. It's like the lit nerd version of Comic-con).

What will you be working on? Maybe we should meet up in person there?

I'm presenting on how Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" is a satire of mourning practices in 18th/19th century America. What are you working on? If we are there at the same time, we should meet up. I'll let you know when exactly I'll be there once the schedule comes out.

I was petrified of conferences before I presented at one - they have since become my form of vacation (especially since I have been able to get grants for every one I have attended). They are a great way to travel, meet people, network, and have nerdy lit fun without being judged lol.

I'm presenting on mise-en-scene and narrative in film adaptations of Pride and Prejudice (but by day I'm mostly a medievalist/Modernist). Will anyone else be at the Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo in May? This is my 2nd year there (first time presenting though) and it's a lot of fun. Edited February 5, 2011 by the once and future grad

I'm working on Masculinities in China Mieville's "Perdido Street Station". Yeah, I'm waiting for the schedule as well. HappyCat Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I'll be doing CCCC again this year, but this is the last one for awhile--I've been to 4 the past year and have had no reimbursement. :-(

The conference website says the program will be up in mid-Feb, so I'm hoping to know soon!
USTgrad Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I'll be in San Antonio too! I'm presenting on mise-en-scene and narrative in film adaptations of Pride and Prejudice (but by day I'm mostly a medievalist/Modernist). That is so awesome to find others who are going to the PCA/ACA in April. I'm presenting on the Arab American panel. My presentation is on the terrorist figure in Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner. This is my 3rd conference, but my first one out of the state! Did any of you apply for a travel grant through the conference? It would be nice to meet up during the conference!
lolopixie Posted February 5, 2011 Author Posted February 5, 2011 I remember last year my area chair sent out our area schedule before the big one came out. I'm not presenting in that area this year, but know someone who is and he hasn't received anything from her yet. My area chair hasn't sent out an area schedule either - guess they are waiting for everything to be done before they send it out this year. I'm ready to know so I can go ahead and make my reservations!!

Did any of you apply for a travel grant through the conference? It would be nice to meet up during the conference! I didn't apply this year because I had surgery and completely forgot about it until the day after it was due! Dang pain killers. However, I applied last year and got it. It was very nice to get a $300 check when I showed up to pick up my registration packet!! Good luck if you applied....and if you get it, your name will go up on the website!
the once and future grad Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 This is my 3rd conference, but my first one out of the state! Did any of you apply for a travel grant through the conference? Me too, on both counts! (if you don't count my tagging along to Kalamazoo last year) I didn't apply for a travel award because I assumed (incorrectly) that one had to be a current grad student. Oops.

What will you be working on? Maybe we should meet up in person there? I, too, will be at the PCA/ACA. I'll be on a Computer Culture panel that discusses the relationships between Deleuze and Guattari's work and cyberculture. What are y'all working on there?

(if you don't count my tagging along to Kalamazoo last year) I didn't apply for a travel award because I assumed (incorrectly) that one had to be a current grad student. Oops. I applied for one that was particularly for grad students. I applied on the last day available to apply! I have been told that San Antonio is beautiful during April. Plus, the Alamo... just to ask if they have a basement is enough reason to go.
Koshka23 Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I'll be at PCA this spring, as well! I'm presenting on female criminality in Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret and the Victorian press. It's so great to hear from other people that are going. I'd love to meet up with anyone that would be interested--I don't know anyone else going, but I am very excited about San Antonio. I'm also in the process of applying for ASFS.

Ssundva, I'm going to try and attend your presentation. I've recently started to work on electronic literature and posthumanism, and this sounds fantastic.

Schedule permitting, we should try to meet up!

I am at Kalamazoo, presenting in one panel and presiding over another one that I organized. This is my third year going. I love it. It really is like a "nerdy lit vacation", as someone else put it, and I always come home feeling refreshed, renewed, and on an ideas-high, if a bit physically exhausted!
the once and future grad Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I love it. It really is like a "nerdy lit vacation", as someone else put it, and I always come home feeling refreshed, renewed, and on an ideas-high, if a bit physically exhausted! Exactly! I'm presenting during the very first session (Thursday at 10am), so I'll be able to relax and really enjoy the rest of it. There are so many panels I'm looking forward to. AND a group of at least four from my MA school will be there Bring on the mead and the Bilbo's pizza!
lolopixie Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 So glad that I decided not to apply to any conferences this spring as my thesis is more than enough work ! I almost didn't apply for the PCA this year because I'm working on my thesis too. Then I realized that the completed version of my thesis is due 2 weeks before the conference, so I opted to take this as my "congratulations, you did it" trip. I'm not presenting in my area of focus, but it is a paper that is completed already that I'm pretty happy with (no revisions to be made, yay). If I didn't already have the paper done and wasn't going to be done with thesis, I probably wouldn't have gone either. Good news, I hit 30 pages on my thesis tonight! Not much more to meet the minimum page requirement, which I know I will be soaring past since I have 3.5 more chapters to write. Hope yours is moving along.
lolopixie Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 My area chair emailed me today for the PCA/ACA and I'll be presenting on the first day, Wednesday, April 20th. She said the entire schedule was available to view on the website, but it isn't showing up yet. Guess it will be posted shortly.
Capo Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 So exited, I was just accepted to present at my second conference in the next few months. The first is an undergraduate conference hosted by the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL next month, and I just received email confirmation for a graduate interdisciplinary conference to be held at the University of British Columbia in May. First time crossing the northern border of the United States -- definitely pumped.
