mzpeck Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Hi, I'm on there already mzpeck Can you give me your information for the spreadsheet? https://spreadsheets...uthkey=CPu-4N4N ^Spreadsheet
erica11 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Is this for the scholarship or fellowship? I got the fellowship for Tanzania (not the African Languages Initiative). The email said: Congratulations! This emailserves as unofficial notification that you have been selected to receive a 2011National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Fellowship. Wewill send you an additional email when your notification packet has beenmailed. Has everyone else heard back?
jg33 Posted May 4, 2011 Author Posted May 4, 2011 Hi, I'm on there already mzpeck My bad. Didn't see you. Congratulations!
marky408 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I haven't heard anything back yet but I will post whatever results I get when I get them!
elementwil Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Oh my god....I got it!!! Congratulations to EVERYONE who applied (regardless of acceptance). It is clear that we are all among the highest level of students in the country, I am proud to be amongst you all.
LenaMarie Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I haven't heard anything back yet but I will post whatever results I get when I get them! same here. im getting a real bad feeling.
gatorafrica Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 alternate....let the wait continue This is a bit annoying. I don't know if you feel the same way, but I can't fathom the idea that a lot of people would refuse their scholarship. I'm wondering whether or not I should just get the ball rolling on contingency plans and not wait around to hear from Boren. I googled "boren scholarship alternate" and it seems that a lot of people have received such an accolade rather than the scholarship itself.
jkohls83 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 agreed...this is going to be hell if i have to wait another day just to find out I didn't get it. same here. im getting a real bad feeling.

If I was you, I'd move along with other plans as if you have no chance of getting the scholarship. That way, it is out of sight, out of mind. If you do get it, it will be a nice surprise!
jkohls83 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 This being my first major scholarship that I have applied for, does anyone know if we can contact Boren and see how far we did get/what was lacking in our apps? I am still retaining some hope but am pretty sure I was not selected....
dancer2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Didn't get it guys...as expected. I was prepared for this rejection letter. Looks like those who did recieve the email mid-march ended up getting accepted. So its definitely an indicator. Good luck to everyone and congrats to those who got it.
Rebekah Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Yeah, I don't know what to think. Especially considering I included the summer portion of the program and I would have to start in 5 weeks at UF. Do you know if alternate means someone else has to drop out from your specific country program or just not accept any of the programs? This is a bit annoying. jg33 Posted May 4, 2011 Author Posted May 4, 2011 First rejection here. Good luck to all the other candidates! Please post your updates on the forum or email them to boren2011.2012@gmail.com, so I can update the spreadsheet! Plan B for me is graduate school and a research assistantship. I have a GRA already, so no big deal on the rejection (although it would have been nice to win). I'll try again next year!

Do you know if alternate means someone else has to drop out from your specific country program or just not accept any of the programs? Yeah that is the big dilemma. No matter what, I think it is pretty unlikely. Are you still going to do SCALI at UF? It'll be intense but fun.
Rebekah Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I hadn't contemplated it until receiving the email, but now it's an option. I am registered. I'm looking into it today. Problem is that I am just about finished with my MA so I may just head over to TZ on my own and take independent lessons there. I went this past January and have made enough connections that it may be more cost effective to do it on my own - not as intense, but who knows? To be honest, I'm not sure which end is up right now. Yeah that is the big dilemma. No matter what, I think it is pretty unlikely. Are you still going to do SCALI at UF? It'll be intense but fun.
mariojuarez Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 (edited) My email just had a photo of a hand giving the middle finger, I guess I didn't get it Edited May 4, 2011 by mariojuarez
jg33 Posted May 4, 2011 Author Posted May 4, 2011 *got it* DYIIIIINNNNGGGG Can you post your information for the spreadsheet? Unless if you are already on there... Some usernames are portions of actual names (from the emails you sent me), and not the username on the forum, so it is kind of confusing...
dancer2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Hey guys, If anyone is willing to send me their proposal (just their essays), please let me know. I'd like to get an idea of what a successful application looks like before I apply again next year. I am a science/engineering student, so if you are a completely different background its absolutely okay. I just wanted to get an idea. -Thanks!! I
dancer2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Don't worry about it. Rejection is not always a bad thing. Personally, it makes me stronger and makes you strive for what you want more. I mean winning would have been AMAZING, but if you are really comitted to studying abroad, it will happen for you my friend. My email just had a photo of a hand giving the middle finger, I guess I didn't get it

I'd like to get an idea of what a successful application looks like before I apply again next year. I am a science/engineering student, so if you are a completely different background its absolutely okay. I just wanted to get an idea. -Thanks!! I I definitely understand where you are coming from. I'm kind of interested to see what the statistics end up looking like for everyone when this is all said and done with... I am an engineering student as well, and was also rejected. If all of the science/engineering people get rejected, I'm going to be thoroughly confused because they were asking for people like us to apply. From a language point-of-view, I think the majority of science/engineering students are going to have a much weaker application. There is really no way for us to incorporate language studies into our degree plans because we don't receive credit for them (at least it is that way at my school), unless if we want to take 6 years to finish our degree. For many of us, it's not feasible to spend a semester or a summer in a language immersion program because we are expected to get internships that will prepare us for the job market upon graduation. Just my two-cents though.
