robtheklobb Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 First time poster here and I haven't seen anyone mention the mtvU grant. Disappointingly rejected, Fulbright-mtvU to Norway.
pelevinfan Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Called Rachel's office and I guess her secretary picked up...I may have to wait until Monday to get my response! *WHINE* I know this seems to ridiculous to those who are still waiting, but man does it suck that I have a deadline, and my country HAS announced - just not to me! ANDD end pity party :-\

ANDD end pity party :-\ Pelevinfan, Speaking only for myself, I don't think it sounds ridiculous at all. Many Russia finalists have been notified, and yet you've heard nothing. If I were in your shoes I'd be going crazy (heck, I'm going crazy myself waiting for notification). Do you have any sense of why you'd need to wait until Monday? In other words, why couldn't they tell you later today or tomorrow? If so many Russia finalists have been finding out yesterday and today, it seems strange to have to wait until Monday. With that said, I don't think there's much more we can do but wait (and hit refresh on our e-mail).

ANDD end pity party :-\ Try calling again or email. When I emailed she got back to me in exactly 4 hours. I don't think you should have to wait the weekend. Just try another time or two. Sorry you're having to wait. :/ Edited April 12, 2012 by Biz pelevinfan and lg702 2
Molly Rowland Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Did anyone find out about the USTA Austria alternate pool and how that works? And perhaps how many alternates there are?
TPliske8711 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I sent an email and got no response, which makes me think that Hoermann is unwilling to speak about these things. Molly has been more open in discussions in the past, but I am sort of unwilling to continue sending emails out, I feel like I have sent too many. I imagine they select alternates based on past experiences of people dropping out (so perhaps just a few above the number they expect to open).

They didn't give me any hint whatsoever as to what the hold-up could be, just said 'it takes a couple of days for FSB to process information and approve things, and so that may be the hold-up.' I'm convinced it was a technical glitch. I wish it had something to do with my applying for the critical language scholarship part, but I doubt it - seems like everyone usually finds out at the same time, regardless. But thanks again for making me feel like I'm not crazy!
Anamaria02 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 so that is the thing that confuses me because last year they took in some of the people who applied to egypt eta program after the protests started happening there...i wish they'd let us know how many people applied since perhaps the arab spring discouraged people? i don't know. ...And didn't they take someone from Portugal as well? ---argggh, you guys - I'm taking my candidacy exams as we speak as well...(im)patiently awaiting the results of that as well.

But thanks again for making me feel like I'm not crazy! I also don't think it's crazy. I know I've been going crazy for weeks to find out, and if I knew other people were notified and I wasn't, I would want to know what's going on, for sure. I hope you get an answer one way or another today to end the wondering. I also applied for the critical language enhancement although the email said nothing about whether I got that or not. Maybe I didn't get it and you did and that's why it's held up! Who knows?!?! Biz and pelevinfan 2
jahanzlik Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 also...this has probably already been answered, but does anyone know how many alternates they appoint? is there a ranking? I havent seen an answer to this yet. I guess it depends on the country. Someone told me we can call and ask where we are ranked in terms of alternates but I feel so weird doing that. Any other opinions? I am happy being an alternate but now we could wait as long as August to hear anything else.
kaguyahime Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I'd certainly be interested in more information about how this alternate business works (for full grants), if anyone knows anything...
jahanzlik Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I'd certainly be interested in more information about how this alternate business works (for full grants), if anyone knows anything... What I know so far, is those accepted are asked to respond within a month if they want to decline. Then usually there are some alternates upgraded to accepted. Then anytime between now and even into September if something happens, emergency, etc, you could be told you can go now (up to September or so). How many for each country is not clear.
ANLstyle Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Ugh, another day without notifications! FullTimeAnxious 1

Wishing I would have applied for an ETA position. Unlike those of us who applied for full fellowships, if you applied for an ETA and get listed as alternate, your chances of getting placed somewhere are much higher for you than for us. We only get promoted from alternate position if another person rejects their full fellowship. I strongly believe we'll hear back next week! Keeping fingers crossed!! Almost there...

pelevinfan Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I have no choice but to laugh at myself. I caught myself thinking "WHAT IS GOING ON I EMAILED RACHEL EIGHT WHOLE HOURS AGO WHY HAS SHE NOT RESPONDED???" What? That is so, so crazy. At this point, one more day - hell, a whole weekend - really doesn't matter. The decision is already made, it just isn't available to me. I swear, this process has brought out a whole new, hilariously uptight side of myself. Biz, lm05anti, lg702 and 2 others 4 1
euphoria* Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 do you know how many people applied for the full? i hate all this not knowing no, but it is always double the #. so if there are 12 fellowships, they probably sent 24 ranked applications. and i'm guessing 6 get alternate positions (probably ranked) and 6 get rejected.
jahanzlik Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Update on the alternates, they wont tell you what rank you are..... so I guess we sit and wait!
Biz Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Update on the alternates, they wont tell you what rank you are..... so I guess we sit and wait! Did you inquire about your rank?
jahanzlik Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Did you inquire about your rank? Yes, the fellowships office director at my school called and asked. They dont release that information.
bjs_7 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Does anyone have any advice for booking airfare? I've started to research flights to Scandinavia, and I'm finding it to be a little confusing due to the restrictions placed on who we are allowed to fly through. As far as I know, we have to adhere to the rules of Fly America Act. Can any past or current grantees share their experiences buying airfare?
dcminot Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Spain people... Is TOMORROW the day?! Or just wishful thinking?
kshorrock Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Spain people... Is TOMORROW the day?! Or just wishful thinking? I'm definitely wishing yet logically thinking next week. C'mon Espana (loud noises)!

Can any past or current grantees share their experiences buying airfare? best way to look is through kayak to determine cheapest (american) airlines then search the airline websites for the flights w us codeshares. expect that they will be more exxy.
peanutbutter2010 Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I applied as an ETA in the Ukraine and still haven't heard. Have you gotten any news recently? Anyone hear about Ukraine yet? I applied for the ETA and am feeling rather twitchy. I also applied to the Ukraine ETA.. according to Morshinska we should be hearing really soon. Also, can anyone speculate about the save-the-date orientation email? Could it imply at least alternate status, especially for countries with a high amount of applications? Just curious!
