Apparently the chair of admissions from Duke posted this on job rumors, a week ago:

Applications up dramatically, in quality and number. Though, of course, our existing set of grad students are all quite wonderful, mind you. Quite. Wonderful Don't send me emails, you Duke people. We love you.

Biggest increase is in IR and Comparative. Very impressive. Quite a number of folks with law degrees, at really fine universities, are considering getting PhDs.

We'll be sending out acceptances in about three weeks, maybe a little more.

Munger is the department chair. Unlike most of the stuff on that board, you can probably trust that message.

Last year, UNC started sending acceptances out on February 1st, a Friday.

I would not be surprised if e-mails were sent out today as well. Keep us posted if you hear anything!

Ohio State has changed the application status from "evaluation" to "academic review." Not sure what it means, but wheels are turning at least.

I have no idea what it means. Mine is still reporting "evaluation." Hopefully definitive results come out this afternoon or certainly next week.

No matter what, I bet a number of schools (Ohio, WUSTL, Stanford, maybe even Duke) will start reporting first round results next week.

I would add Yale and Berkeley to that list as well.

Hi Ivyreject, welcome! I applied to UF as well (for various reasons, it's actually my first-choice school). Like you, I'm returning after a 5 year hiatus in the real world, and I have an interdisciplinary and somewhat unusual background. Good luck with all your schools!

What makes you guys think Stanford will get back to people next week? Last year they seemed to be mainly mid-Feb onwards. Not that I don't want to hear, I just don't want to work myself into a fever pitch of expectation too soon :)

Last year Stanford did a first set of rejections on the 6th and then had a smattering of acceptances from the 7th-9th (including acceptance phone calls on Saturdays). So, there is reason to believe they may send out their first wave next week, but obviously it could be later (I just can't resist the optimistic possibility that next week could be the week :) )

I received rejections from all four of those schools on the following dates last year:

OSU - Feb 4th (online system)

WUSTL - Feb 19th (mail)

Stanford - Feb 6th (e-mail)

Duke - Feb 20th (e-mail)

I'm curious what this means too. Mine still says "evaluation" as well. What does it say below that?

The explanation underneath is: "Your application has been sent to the graduate program for academic review." Is that the same as what it said before? I knew I should have been taking verbatim notes like a theorist!!!

Mine still says, under evaluation:

"Your application is currently in the process of being evaluated and prepared for an academic decision."

Ugh, I'm really looking forward to the weekend when I don't have to think about this shit.

Btw, great school selection for middle eastern!

Word is that Emory usually has a couple of waves of admits, so I'd say you can wait a long time before being discouraged. Looks like people were still getting into Emory in early March last year. Also, it seems like Emory is going to interview a bunch of people. I don't know why I even read poliscijobrumors, but someone on that site says "This is typical for Emory. They accept a few favorites and interview the rest on their short list." Normally, as the other people on the board have pointed out, you have to take anything on that board with a grain of thought, but this seems to match the results search records from last year.

(Note also that I did not apply to Emory, so you know that I do not have a strong incentive for such rosy thinking. :P )

At some point between 10am and 1pm Central, my status at OSU went from Evaluation to Academic Review. I'm crossing my fingers that this means the department has recommended me for an admit and it just has to go through the grad school, but who knows?
