husky07 Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I don't see many CS people around here, are they just too confident to be on this forum, or are they just observing? Anyway, I know CS decisions don't come out until mid February but I am already freaking out, I can't wait anymore
jino Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 International CS applicant right here, but only for an MS degree. Applying to USC, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and NYU. How about you?
michigantrumpet Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 I'm waiting to hear from CS (and one ECE) PhD programs... getting tired of hitting "Get Mail"! So far just a phone interview with a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon who knows my undergrad research advisor.
timuralp Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 haha no reason to freak out. By the way, phone interviews are good signs - it might mean the person's trying to recruit you, which means you'll probably get in. Not to get your hopes up too high CS decisions can take until the first week of April to materialize. Just a heads up.
IvyHope Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 ... getting tired of hitting "Get Mail"! I highly recommend gmail. Inbox automatically updates when you get a message.
michigantrumpet Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Well sure, but the truly obsessed can't wait that long I was mostly kidding anyway. And I do perk up every time my BlackBerry buzzes with a new e-mail.
husky07 Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 jino, I am international as well but applying for a PhD. There is little funding for international students as it is and almost no funding for MS, are you planning on financing your MS on your own?
sergeastorms Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 CS PhD applicant checking in. But, why spend all your time waiting anxiously by the computer? I set my gmail settings to automatically forward anything with "graduate", "congratulations", etc. to my cell phone as a text message. Who am I kidding? I still check my email constantly. Plus frequent trips to that other, paper mailbox.
jino Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Husky, yup. A very generous relative is bribing me to go back to school by offering to pay for my tuition and living expenses for the 2 years. I'm also hoping that maybe that'll make my chances better since the schools won't have to fund me. Am I crazy or is there some truth to that?
husky07 Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 jino, I think it definitely helps, especially for MS, to have funding.
defmacro Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Another CS PhD applicant chiming in, also anxiously waiting. God, this is going to kill me =\.
michigantrumpet Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Berkeley too, apparently. At least with my Carnegie Mellon interview, it was with a potential advisor, not a general admissions thing. So, interviews can happen at any time and not necessarily in batches or all at once. Keep up the hope!
defmacro Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Are interviews standard in Computer Science? Is this an individual faculty member scouting a recruit, or is everyone who will be admitted going to be interviewed?
husky07 Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 anyone applying to Canadian universities?
vidman Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I was accepted into UIUC Computer Science PhD two days ago. Haven't heard back from UWashington, Cornell, UMaryland, Columbia, or Princeton.
michigantrumpet Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 It depends entirely on the school/professor. Some of my CS/EE grad student friends were definitely accepted places without interviews.
plisar Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Interviews are not typically a departmental requirement in CS/EE, more of a faculty by faculty requirement.
MaximKat Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I was accepted into UIUC Computer Science PhD two days ago. Did you receive a letter from Roy Campbell saying "bla-bla-bla... congratulations... bla-bla-bla... You will soon receive an offer letter that will contain more information regarding financial support and other useful information"? That is what I have received yesterday. I am wondering, how soon is this "soon"
vidman Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Did you receive a letter from Roy Campbell saying "bla-bla-bla... congratulations... bla-bla-bla... You will soon receive an offer letter that will contain more information regarding financial support and other useful information"? Yep, same thing. Did any professors contact you yet?
MaximKat Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Yep, same thing. Did any professors contact you yet? Nothing, no professors and no offer letter yet
akwok Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 anyone applying to Canadian universities? Me. I applied only to UBC, for my Masters. I hope I get in, otherwise I'm screwed! Anyone know if it's a toughie to get into?
husky07 Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 MaximKat and Vidman, could you please share your stats with us? akwok, are you applying to american schools + only UBC in Canada? that's what I am doing, 6 PhD programs in the US + UBC M.S.

Only UBC. Looking to focus on HCI, hopefully it's not too popular a field! I'm in Canada by the way -- specifically BC. I did my undergrad at Waterloo, and after 4 years there I don't think I can stand the Ontario weather for another 2 (or more)!
husky07 Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 hehe, I am hoping to focus on HCI as well, have you been looking at potential advisors? I agree with you on waterloo, I wanted to apply there because the school is really good, but the weather turned me off.
