curlie-sue Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 @chriskyk, thank you, super helpful. I am going to be glass half full about this, but will also seriously look into Duke and U - M and pick one as a back up. What is your plan if you don't get in? Will you just forgo the double degree? fingers crossed
curlie-sue Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 LHL, go to Duke, go to Duke! Jk, congrats jhuffine, I got into Bren a couple of weeks ago, but they may be accepting people by concentration area. I chose cons planning.
LHL Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 @curlie-sue: I'll wait for the finaid package... but are you leaning more toward Duke now as well???
cunninlynguist Posted March 9, 2012 Author Posted March 9, 2012 Now we've got some acceptances! Congratulations to greendiplomat, crimsonmays, and LHL. Despite being very excited about Duke, I will concede that I just picked up 4 items off McDonald's dollar menu to ease the sting of rejection, lol.
greendiplomat Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 @curlie-sue: I'll wait for the finaid package... but are you leaning more toward Duke now as well??? Congrats! I also noticed that you're interested in environmental economics, though on the waste management end (I'm rather uncreative in my interests in climate economics). Does anyone know whether there's an admitted students' online forum of sorts that we could get questions answered outside of the Open House or individual emails?
xlostlove777 Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Ha cunninlynguist, that sounds a lot more healthy than what I did. My boss happened to bring in a bottle of rum the other day, needless to say it hasn't been a productive day! Congrats for those who got in, New Haven is a great city. Once you start accepting and you have questions as far as apartments or anything like that feel free to ask.
chriskyk Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 @chriskyk, thank you, super helpful. Will you just forgo the double degree? fingers crossed Yeah you're right, I guess I'll just continue my MPH degree alone then... I really wanna get in!!!! I emailed them and told them to put more emphasis on my special situation (that I'm already a Yale student) haha. I think a lot of people are leaning towards Duke actually?
MCRM Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 (edited) Congratulation LHL! I'm very happy with Duke but I'm still waiting for the financial aid offer... I'm concern about whether or not we will get financial aid from Yale if we make it from the wait list to admitted students. Any thoughts in this? I also decided to eat tons if Ice cream to deal with being wait listed at my top choice of school! Thanks to everyone again for all the info! Edited March 9, 2012 by MCRM
artemis Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Congrats to those who got admitted to Yale. I got waitlisted too. But 63 is a big number!
akl_cat Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 In as well, congrats to others who got in Anyone still waiting on SNRE here? Still no words from them. So currently a tossup between FES and Nicholas. FES seems to have a strong enough focus on the industrial side, but Nicholas has an amazing alum network. Guess will have to wait for the financial figures to make the final call.
artemis Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 I just emailed Danielle, the assistant director of Yale's FES and she said there're 63 applicants who got waitlisted. p.s I'm one of them Some of us could end up as classmates Any clue about the total number of students admitted? or number trends on waitlists in the past
asif Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Just got back from the conference! Was amazing and if possible I'm more in love with Yale more than ever! So yes, she said they wet trying to give desicions away sooner this year, but didn't tell me exact me when, so I guess I'm just gonna check my email thousands of times a day haha This year 581 people applied to all the masters programs and approximately 220 will be admitted to enroll a class of 140 more or less! Financial aid options are very kind for internationals. GRE probably the last thing they check. That was pretty much all! Hope it eases the nerves on some of you! I'm extremely anxious! Good luck to all congratulations to all those who made it into FES and good luck to fellow wait listed students i am wondering if these 220 likely to be admitted students include the 63 wait list students... if yes dn all wait listed students have a fair chance to get in... cheers i hope m getting the picture right
MCRM Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 (edited) Congratulations again to all admitted! Do you all have Yale as the best fit for you? To all of us wait listed, last year 20-25 people were admitted from the wait list, though they said this number changes every year, because it fully depends on how many people don't accept their offer. I think they will give us space when they get a class less than 140, I doubt they will start calling us when some of the 220 decline admission. I'm focusing on Duke now, I really like their program, my focus is sustainability though, and they don't have a specialization on this area, does anyone know if they are strong in this? I would guess I'll have to mix my classes from EE and EPP. Any thoughts on this? SNRE would probably be better on sustainability but there is no way I can go without financial aid. biggytre Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Anyone else torn between Bren and FES/Nicholas? The in-state tuition at Bren for me is hard to pass on.
curlie-sue Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 MCRM, I'm in the same boat as you: none of the Duke concentrations fit my interests perfectly. However, I recall one of their reps at a grad fair saying that mixing of areas is OK. This is something I plan to investigate more at the admitted student's day. I also hope to meet with profs that are doing research in line with my interests. Have you looked at the faculty to see who matches your interests? Will you be down there?

I really wish I could go, but I'm in Colombia and I can't afford to travel, plus my visa is expired so I'm not even allowed to enter the us right now hehe. I was reading trough the specializations today and there is a track on EPP on business and the environment, which I think would be great for me, combine with some EE classes. It said that you can combine some of the EPP tracks with other specializations. What are your interest? If you don't mind, when the time comes, can I please ask you to ask something for me at the open house? Or just tell me how it go. Who knows we might end up being class mates Edited March 11, 2012 by MCRM
cunninlynguist Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 (edited) I will also say that the concentration at Duke isn't perfect for me, but there are some major benefits. For one, anything that includes the word "Economics" is marketable, and the quantitative rigor of EEP will give us a lot of useful and practical skills. And I'll second the request for anyone going to admitted students events -- if you can share any information afterward, there are several of us who would definitely appreciate it. On that note, I was thinking it would also be nice if a few of us checked the GradCafe around this time next year and shared our wisdom with the next crop of applicants if they have questions about certain programs. curlie-sue Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 sure thing cunnin. and MRCM and anyone else. I'll add your questions to my list and conduct a full report back May go to U-M too, so let me know about those Qs too.
MCRM Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I agree cunnin! Thanks so much Curlie-sue, I will think in some questions these next days and let you know! I'm actually writing an essay for a loan application about why Duke is one of the best schools in the world for MEM programs, so I've been reading tons and I really think we would be able to shape our master to fit our interests. Btw if anyone wants to help with ideas of why Duke is the best, I would be very grateful!
vanillasoylatte Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) Does anyone have any thoughts on UPENN Masters of Environmental Studies versus Duke MEM (Environmental Economics and Policy track- with $ and an assistantship). Accepted: DUKE MEM ($ and Assistantship), UPENN Masters of Environmental Studies, American University M.A. Global Environmental Policy, Bard M.S. Environmental Policy ($), Indiana University MPA, University of Edinburgh Msc Ecological Economics, GWU Environmental Resource Policy, Waiting: Tulane, BU, Michigan MAE Rejected: Yale FES Edited March 13, 2012 by vanillasoylatte
cunninlynguist Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Duke's program has the benefit of being within an entire school dedicated to the environment. You'll have greater access to resources and faculty that are closely aligned to your academic and professional goals; Penn's program is simply housed amongst many others in their College of Liberal and Professional Studies. The career services staff at Nicholas -- and the power you can wield as a Duke alum in that sector -- is lauded as very strong. The Nicholas School's reputation is excellent. The reputation of Penn's program seems unknown and the cohort is comprised differently, as it is oriented toward an older crowd already in the field (reflected by the option of being a part-time student there, which isn't available at the "top" environment schools). One of the key draws for me regarding Duke (and the EEP concentration) is the quantitative and analytical preparation. No idea about Penn's emphasis on those skills. What's your background? What are you looking to do after the degree? akl_cat 1

In addition to the analytical rigor of the Duke program, the Nicholas school is far more well-known than Penn's program, especially within domestic policy circles. That, plus the money that Duke's throwing at you, should make this an all-around win-win solution. (Unless there's a personal reason that compels you to Philly and not Durham). vanillasoylatte Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) Thank you Greendiplomat and cunninlynguist for your advice. I'm flying out to duke for the visit day, which I think will certainly make this decision process easier. @cunninlynguist I'm coming straight from undergrad with a double major in economics and enviro studies. I'm interested in environmental policy maybe pursuing a jd at some point. @ Greendiplomat what about penn'sreputation as a whole. Ivy league, opportunity to take classes at Wharton etc. Edited March 13, 2012 by vanillasoylatte
cunninlynguist Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Your visit will definitely be helpful, and I imagine you will gain a huge amount of clarity with regards to Duke's program and its strengths. Since you're already familiar with economic concepts, the EEP concentration will build upon that much more so than anything available at Penn. BTW, there are a few law courses available through Duke. I plan on taking at least 2, if possible (Environmental Law and Natural Resource Law). And the distinction between Duke and Penn, based on name alone, is negligible to the layperson, but significant in the environmental sector. As a corollary to this: since there will be a few GradCafers going to Duke for admitted students weekend, could you please inquire about the opportunity to take electives in other departments?
