BlueCamel Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Just wondering if there are any social psych applicants out there! Where are people applying to?? I am applying to Yale WUSTL University of Toronto Harvard University of Michigan NYU University of Virginia Northeastern
Behavioral Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Well, I'm not applying to Social Psych programs, but that Northeastern certainly sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of your schools! haha
yubby Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 if you dont mind me asking, who are you interested in @ harvard? someone's doing nvb there?
BlueCamel Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 implicit cognition/ stereotype (most of my research experience) stuff there: Mahzarin Banaji, Amy Cuddy yubby 1
dabaker3 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Anyone interested in HCI and know good schools to apply to? Stanford used to do it, but I don't see anyone researching it right now which is messed up - seems like everything is running research out the Eastern schools in interdisciplinary programs (MIT, Harvard, Dartmouth). Really want to stay on the West Coast. Also interested in anthropomorphism and morality. Any ideas are much appreciated!
lewin Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Also interested in anthropomorphism and morality. Dan Wegner, Kurt Gray, Nick Epley, Adam Waytz, and John Cacioppo are some of the biggest names in those areas right now (not necessarily in that order). Or Thalia Wheatley if you like more of a social neuroscience flavour. You're going to have lots of competition applying to those people.
newpsyche Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 So exciting! I've just submitted Arizona State, U Oregon, WUSTL, U Iowa, and Duke. I'm finished with Cornell, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, UNC-Chapel Hill, and UVA but have yet to actually press the 'submit and pay' button. Has anyone taken the time to total up application costs? Taking into account app fees, GRE score reports, transcripts, postage (for the few schools still using snail mail...I had two) I'm at $1,331.77. If anyone has any questions about UNC-Chapel Hill I'd be glad to answer them!
Behavioral Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Who are you applying under at U of O? Back when Ellen Peters was still there, I considered applying under Slovic et al so I could collaborate with the researchers at DRI.
Behavioral Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 And those are some expensive fees. $1300+ for 11 schools? I applied to 11 programs last year, and think I was right around the $1000 mark taking into account everything you mentioned. Some schools were pretty bad in terms of application fee (I think Cornell was like $125), but a lot of the public schools I applied to were like $50-$60. Also, some Psych programs don't pay for your flight out, and some only cover a portion/fixed amount of the flight, so take that into account.
newpsyche Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 @Behavioral--whew! I'm glad Cornell backed off to $95, then! Mine actually could have been more--Iowa granted me a free application and three of my GRE reports ($23 each) were sent for free while taking the GRE. Three schools also didn't require official transcripts ($9.25 each). It could have been worse...but it hurts my wallet enough as it is. ): I'm applying to Dr. Srivastava and/or Dr. Hodges at UO. I had no idea the whole flight wasn't paid for! Oh dear...that's going to hurt just as badly.
Mr. Tea Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Stanford had a $125 application fee last year. They were the most expensive by $35.
Behavioral Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) Stanford's application fee was $125 for Marketing, too, but I didn't apply since I missed the deadline. Phew, since I got into my dream school and probably wouldn't have attended if accepted anyway. I used that money to buy myself a nice coat for this midwest winter. sweetnighter Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Stanford had a $125 application fee last year. They were the most expensive by $35. Yeah, criminal.
William_James Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Applying to a mix of social neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience. Hey 'redheadblueheel' - I went to UNC for undergrad...who do you work with there? Currently in MA program. School list: Stanford Berkeley Columbia NYU UCSD Yale Harvard Northwestern and 2 back ups
BlueCamel Posted November 17, 2011 Author Posted November 17, 2011 does anyone know how long it takes for ETS to send out the GRE score to the schools you've applied to?
newpsyche Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Hi there, Blue Camel! Ugh, they say something dreadful like 3-4 weeks, but it actually takes about 3-4 business days. (: They typically send them electronically.
Behavioral Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Yup. When I was applying to business schools, my GMAT was supposed to take 3-6 weeks to reach schools, but the ones I specified on test day received them in about 1 week or so.
BlueCamel Posted November 18, 2011 Author Posted November 18, 2011 I was a little paranoid but I just saw that they have received my GRE! Does anyone know if putting Department Code when sending out the scores do anything (i.e. slow it down if the school says theres no Department Code)?
Behavioral Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I don't think any of us would know that question? I'd e-mail one of the program directors for the answer to that question, though personally I'd guess it doesn't make a big difference.
gradschoolguru Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Social Psychology applicants: This blog post is a MUST READ for you. psychdork Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Hi everyone, I'm back for another round of applications (last time I "settled" for a masters program, which I'm currently finishing up). This time I'm applying to 14 schools. All my apps have been submitted, as well as two of my letters, so now I'm just checking to make sure the schools have received everything so I can finally relax (as much as one can relax when applying). Best of luck to everyone! @redheadblueheel: Between app fees & GRE scores my total was around $1000...though I lucked out that my transcripts were free at both my previous schools.
