Scalia Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Will the person that posted the Missouri Quantitative interview please send me their POI? Thank you!
psychgurl Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 humankoko- did you hear anything from Brown? I see it's scratched out on your signature...
humankoko Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 humankoko- did you hear anything from Brown? I see it's scratched out on your signature... Turns out my name was spelled wrong on fee waiver so application was late for some unknown amount of time. Contacted the office today when I realized what had happened, they told me interview invitations had been sent. It was my first choice, it sucks.
humankoko Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Also, I'm at University of Oregon so happy to answer any questions anyone has about that program.

gellert Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Wait, so all Brown interview invites have been sent already?
beachgirl Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Does anyone know if some social psych programs accept students without interviews? Or if some wait list you without an interview?
watson Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Does anyone know if some social psych programs accept students without interviews? Or if some wait list you without an interview? Some schools do accept without an interview (OSU comes to mind from when I was accepted a few years back), however you'd have been notified by now in that case. Many will waitlist without an interview and wait to contact until they start getting declines from accepted students--this is how I got into 2 additional schools (Tufts & UVa) after I'd already picked a grad program--however, in both cases I was called and told that I was on the waitlist and asked around late February if I would like to be on the waitlist of if I had already chosen a program. Many programs however will only accept people who either interviewed or were invited to the visiting weekend (non-interview acceptance like at OSU but will only pick from the group that visits). I'm at Northwestern--we only accept people who interview, and even if they all decline we don't extend any other invites...we sent invites to interview several weeks ago. amandarinorange 1
gellert Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Yeah, I think it varies. At my school, there is a prof who, this year, interviewed five stellar people but got a bad "vibe" from all of them. Late February, he calls up another five and brings them in for an unofficial interview and accepts someone from that group. However, I do think this is an exceptionally rare occurrence. I'm trying not to let myself hope for a situation like that, because I feel it would be a false hope and I don't think I could intentionally set myself up for that kind of disappointment.

Another (rare) possibility is for programs to do a second round of interviews (according to my prof/advisor). This would probably depend on the school though, and even then seems more of an anomaly than anything...I'm just passing along the shreds of hope to which I'm clinging. @Watson: Thanks for the info! I didn't know UVa would accept people off the waitlist without an interview, so that's good to know.
psychdork Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Has anyone heard from Michigan State's social program or know someone who has? There is nothing on the results board so far, but pretty much all of MSU's other programs have sent out notifications so I'm curious.
BlueCamel Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Boston College post: can you tell me your POI?? and congrats!
Floating Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 For those who are still waiting for Berkeley, my friend told me that she called and asked the department yesterday. She was told that interviews were sent. Only 7 students were asked for an interview, which means they are anticipating accepting about 5 or 6. This year is extremely difficult... Boston College post, could you tell me your POI too? Congratulations!! Good luck to everyone.

Oh well, I wasn't really expecting an interview there anyway.
watson Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Do all social programs interview? No. And those that do are a more informal interview than with Clinical (i.e., you don't need to wear a suit, but this is still an interview so be on good behavior--you wouldn't believe some of the things I've seen!). I know several (excellent) programs accept without interview (ex. OSU), but only take from the people invited to the visiting weekend, others accept more people after the weekend if they get a lot of declines...they will usually happen in March and generally happen with an informal phone interview and/or an email/call saying you're on a waitlist.

Are you saying to not wear a suit the interviews? And what do you mean by the comment about accepting without interviews. Are you saying that they accept you but won't take you unless you go to visiting weekend...?

Scalia Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Will the person who got the UW Developmental Interview please PM me the POI? Thanks and congrats!
humankoko Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Boston College person--who you wanting to work with there?
svh Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I was planning on wearing a suit to an interview So was I. And I think I still will... You can always dress down a suit if you need to based on what everyone else is wearing. Just take off your jacket and your tie, just your jacket, or just your tie. You can also swap your suit pants for dark jeans and leave off the tie.
socihealth Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Ok good, I have not gotten interview invites yet to any of my programs but they don't have any info on their websites about interviews. Many of the deadlines for apps were Jan 15 so I thought I wouldn't hear back until Feb at the earliest. I am beginning to think I may be completely wrong. I goes its possible that my programs don't interview but I guess maybe they do and I just assume that Im rejected?
watson Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Regarding the suits: Social psych interviews are less formal than clinical ones. If you're worried, just ask a grad student at the program (or the POI who invited you) what you're expected to wear. At NU, we tell you not to come in a suit/tie...I'd suggest slacks and a button-down shirt, nice but not super formal. The few people who come in ties/jackets usually feel awkwardly overdressed and take them off but then are carrying them around all day.
watson Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Are you saying to not wear a suit the interviews? And what do you mean by the comment about accepting without interviews. Are you saying that they accept you but won't take you unless you go to visiting weekend...? I meant that some schools that don't interview but have a visiting weekend will make offers and invite those students to visit (already accepted but as a way to woo them into picking that school). Only people offered a place before the visit will be accepted--no new offers later. However, (to answer your question) if you're invited to visit and choose NOT to attend the visiting weekend, they won't withdraw your offer....but I can't see a good reason to select a program you didn't bother going to the visiting weekend for if invited. If you got 2 invites to visit schools on the same weekend, tell one program and they'll usually work out another day for you to visit.
