CrazyCatLady80 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Thinking about everyone. Surprised UCI came out so early.
KTLady Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Congrats to the Berkeley admit. I'm just gonna sit here and pout for a while...
LadyRara Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Congratulations to the new generation of incredible historians admitted to those amazing institutions!! Especially with funding!! Ohhh, funding! :-) Now that your panic is alleviated, have patience with the rest of us crazies here! Awaiting the University of Oklahoma here. Nervously awaiting a response! Andean Pat and KTLady 2
dknows Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 heart skipped a beat when I saw the Wisconsin-Madison art history PhD admit. Missed the 'art' bit on the first read through!
unchien Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 To the person who got the Berkeley call: congrats! Was it a call from your POI? Did you get any sense as to whether others might be hearing back soon?
vtstevie Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 hey everyone - i'm proctoring an ACT practice test for some of my students right now and figured that was an appropriate time to see how everyone is doing. between work and feeling stressed about apps i sort of figured i'd do better NOT hanging around everyone else who is freaking out and now that all my applications are in, i can't help but check with you guys to hear where folks are getting in (or not). i'm honestly feeling pretty pessimistic right now - i know i spelled one of my POI's names wrong once in a SOP (UGH beyond embarassing - it's at a school that was basically a last minute after thought but still, nightmare scenario) and looking over my writing sample i know it can be improved. the writing itself is the best i've done, but i wish i had added more context and a table of contents to it before submitting. i'm hoping my recommendations and the quality of the research itself will make up for that though. anyone else kicking themselves right now and feeling like maybe this isn't the cycle for them? or am i just going through one of the many stages of PHD application grief? also, apparently a U Maine result came in on 1/4 - what's the story with that? did you apply super early, or what?
annieca Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Oh, the kicking is serious. Aber was just kind of a whim. But the more time I spend in Aber, the more I *really* really want to go there. South Carolina wasn't a whim but the same sentiment applies. My resume is awesome for Archives. I'm not going to deny that. But I still see flaws everywhere. For example, Aber is the only archives program left in the UK that requires Latin. I don't speak a word. ...

But, in good news - I applied for a fellowship/internship at the Library of Congress this summer - and the deadline has passed so my status on USAJobs has finally moved to "reviewing application"!
vtstevie Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 i'd love some stories from experienced grad cafe folks who realized a major flaw in their application and still got in i'm sure most of my feeling is just having to get up at 7 on a saturday feeling slightly hungover as it is...why isn't it february yet?! History Time Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 (edited) Hey I'm new around here! I haven't received any official news from any of my programs. However, I received a financial aid email from Madison a couple weeks ago that made my heart drop. Of course the disclaimer "this is not an admissions decision was right at the top" That and I got a letter from Oregon saying they received my online application. SWEET, thanks for letting me know--I haven't been checking email five times a day since mid-December. I wanted to ask a question though, I graduated (B.A.) this December from a relatively average University. However, I completed my undergraduate thesis work last spring in order to have a strong writing sample for prospective grad schools. I spent spring break researching at the Wisconsin Historical Society archives in Madison, so I decided to apply at UW-Madison just for the hell of it. The primary source material on the New Left there is the largest cache in the nation. Anyone know if this sort of thing will really help my application there or other places? I spent three hours late last night reading the forums, this place has already helped the app season anxiety Edited January 26, 2013 by History Time
lafayette Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 i'd love some stories from experienced grad cafe folks who realized a major flaw in their application and still got in i'm sure most of my feeling is just having to get up at 7 on a saturday feeling slightly hungover as it is...why isn't it february yet?! Yes, me. At Johns Hopkins, where i just got in. Firstly, almost all my schools received a CV with a big, dumb bold spelling mistake. But I tried not to beat myself up. But my worst mistake ( that I know of) was butchering, and I mean butchering, a professor's name in the dept in my fit paragraph. Luckily not my two main POIs but it was a very blatant mistake. And suffice to say ... They did not care. So please try not to fixate on your mistake, as there is nothing you can do about it at this point. I know it's impossible to forget but ... Good things can happen. We are all human. That said, my Berkeley app was pretty sloppy (the writing sample ... It was my first and I could have given it so much more care) & I've pretty much assumed I'm out there. But who knows. Just trying to keep myself busy with other things. And other good news. Best of luck.
lafayette Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Quick followup to my above: Or rather, I should say, not that they did not care about my blatant mistake, but rather the strengths of my application outweighed it.
New England Nat Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Finding the typo after submission is something that happens all the time not just in this process. I sent off a paper to an editor last week with a typo i saw exactly 5 minutes after hitting send.
TMP Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 And I just wrote a letter to the Powers To Be in the Grad School asking for a grant and put in the mailbox of the DGS to be forwarded to them. Several hours later, I found the typo ad e-mailed the DGS, completely freaking out, not to pick up that letter until I gave her a new one. When I saw her the next day with a corrected copy, she looked at me like I was nuts. She had reviewed the letter beforehand but didn't catch the typo. She couldn't even imagine where was the typo in such a perfectly strong letter when she looked at the first page (typo was on the second). It's the grammar mistakes that put off people. Not typos like "abit"/"a bit."

czesc Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 (edited) There's been a Berkeley admit? Congrats to whomever it was, but ach, I'm officially pessimistic now. Edited January 26, 2013 by czesc
CrazyCatLady80 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 That is why I never read anything after I submitted it. If I catch a mistake, I beat myself up and the next thing I know I can't get out bed. czesc 1

viggosloof28 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 There's been a Berkeley admit? Congrats to whomever it was, but ach, I'm officially pessimistic now. Me too... A big, seriously ENORMOUS congratulations to the two that have gotten in! While I'm now beginning to despair of my chances of getting in, I'm so happy for you - such a great program! I know the first admit was for American History, but what is the second admitted person studying? Please reveal yourself! (Pretty please? In a PM? I'll keep your secrets, I swear!)
czesc Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) I'd be interested to know if it's just American History admits at Berkeley so far too... (I am more or less planning to do European stuff) Edited January 27, 2013 by czesc
