deianira Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 We're all checking email every 5 minutes in anticipation of that coveted graduate program contact. But most of the time it's spam, right? Someone posted "Crate and Barrel U" in the results search - cute. I get Banana Republic ads, and random invites from graduate programs I've never heard of (U of TX biomedical, anyone?). But lately the most numerous spam category is the russian wives spam- several a day. Sample subject line: "Looking for a hot new wife? Get one from Russia!". This is made even more interesting by the fact that I am from Russia, and a heterosexual female...so if I were looking for a mail order...um...person it would be a man-toy, not a wife, and I certainly wouldn't want one from Russia ('cause that would just be same old). SO what's in your inbox?
hornedfrogmeg Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 This whole process sucks doubly much for me because I work freelance and I have been out of school since dec without any work. Everyday I apply to multiple jobs and so not only am I checking for work I am checking grad school stuff. It's so pathetic to get zero emails about either one. I don't know what i am going to do if I don't get into any graduate school and I can't ever get work. ack!
dragynally Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Torrid.com- coupons Horoscopes Bath and Body Works CareerBuilder.com Never anything good
ebee Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I'm on a listserv that gets me 5-9 pointless e-mails per day. Right now I don't care bc I'm not expecting to hear back from my other two schools til mid-March, but around the time I was expecting to hear from my first school it was killing me. My g-mail is always open at work and every time I see that (1) I would get sooooooo excited/nervous/scared, only to click over and see it was just another listserv email
zhukora Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I mostly get spam about enhancing the size of my penis. Which is funny, 'cause like you, I am most decidedly female. I've also gotten a few claiming to tell me how to buy a degree. One of them only had that as the subject line, and the body of the text was about Viagra, but one of them actually had some rather lengthy text inside about how life experience should be enough to qualify you for an advanced degree (in...what?), and that if you had that life experience, you should go ahead and send them your bank account information....
Yellow#5 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 All that spam from the S. African Banks! Because I'm expecting emails from Deans with unfamiliar names, I even opened one.

Emma2003 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 "Jason! (not me)5 DVD's for 49 cents!" "3 things that could harm your bones!" "Hot Fare Alert!" "Get rockin' Buns" No emails from Nigerian royalty though.... It's an oldie but goodie...
Phoenix Rising Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 There's nothing else in my inbox, I delete all other nonsense to make way for program contacts. Only kidding. Much of the same, random e-mails from obscure programs I've never heard of or some study abroad opportunities. Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of deleting any "Russian wives" spam. Other than that nothing I really want to see. *sigh* Anywho, I'm off to refresh my inbox!
Rutabaga Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I have everything going to my current school email, so a bunch of random events I have no intention of going to, emails re: group projects, and a few list serves I'm on. Nothing I look forwards to reading...
anthcat Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 ALL of my spam, almost entirely without exception, is for male-enhancement drugs. But it still cracks me up, because I'm a drag king. While I play a very virile man on stage, my male-enhancement is all achieved with injection molded silicone.
Victory Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Got my Direct TV bill "ready for viewing". And the one that ALWAYS kills me...especially because it comes every single day is the one with the subject line "COLUMBIA SIPA Admissions". OH SHIT! I think, but... it always turns out to be a blog alert that I signed up for last week. It's like the dense kid who falls for the same trick over and over and over again.
Yellow#5 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Almost had a heart attack when I opened my email to find an email from HARVARD!!! (Bookstore, that is). and I didn't even apply to Harvard.
GirlattheHelm Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Campus Email. Oh, and offers for emu chicks...
ohheygradschool Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I get my schools' "Daily Email," which doesn't even have what's for lunch in the cafeteria. F.
Tonights Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Replies to livejournal comments, alerts on the ski conditions at our nearby winter sports facility, and Netflix emails. *despairs*
Jakrabite Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Yesterday I got an email from Penn State because I had pressed some button mistakenly on the app status page and they had sent me my password. I got totally friggin psyched because the sender was Penn State Graduate Application Status. Momma I cant take no more shocks anymore.
abolitionista Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I opened my inbox to "are you displeased with the measurement of your willy?" ... Um NO! First, I'm a lady and that's gross. And secondly, stop clogging up my inbox space I'm waiting for much more important things!
was1984 Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Amex statement Columbia Video Network (CVN) advertisement - They will harass me until the day I die because I took one course! Monster Job Agent Search Results - Never relevant, haven't bothered to get off this one Discover statement A bunch of Linked In and Facebook spam I get about 45 emails a day that don't go directly into my spam folder, so about 45 times a day I check my email, hoping!
vern23 Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 -events going on this week in my school dept -scammers pretending to want to buy my craigslist item -bills -some other stupid worthless crap that are not grad school acceptances
miratrix Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 A lot of listserve emails. In order of frequency: my church, groups from college I'm no longer involved with, and work. Ooh, and facebook alerts. Aside from a few social-life-planning emails, that's about it.
riseandfall Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Way too many notifications of book reviews, etc from H-net reviews (of which I've read .2%) and endless whining students's emails on how freaked they are about their essays which I'll be handing back on Tuesday. Calm down, my dear Freshman. If I can maintain some sort of cool outward appearance during this waiting process, so can you. And not a thing from any of my programs. :x
mylstisr Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 if i get one more email from Paypal or Ticketmaster instead of an email from one of my schools i am going to pull all my hair out
policy_applicant Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Moveon at least twice a day Obama twice a week Equality CA (No on Prop 8 offshoot) twice a day Local Politicians twice a week Facebook Ugh, email from USC asking them to check out their community development events (joke's on you guys--I'm not that excited about your program anyway) Oh, and the occasional email from an actual friend But NOTHING else from schools since February 5. Not that that stops me from refreshing my email every 10 minutes.
