This may or may not be of interest to anyone in here, but I spoke with the Director of the Department of Global Health where I was accepted yesterday. She wanted to give me a personal welcome, which was nice, but more importantly we talked about funding. She said that while no offer can be made until they know what funding they have to work with, "We typically have a lot of external grant funding as well as some additional in-house support available, and all of the PhD students I’ve helped supervise over the last 6 years have had full funding during their time at ASU."

I am certainly looking forward to hearing back from my remaining three programs but this was reassuring. Throughout this process I have gotten the best feeling from  the faculty at ASU out of the programs to which I've applied, so if I can count on full funding there I won't be too disappointed if I don't get any other offers. My only reservation is that living in Arizona does not sound appealing at all. Conversely, Washington's faculty have been far less engaging in their communication with me but I love love love Seattle.

Does anyone have any experience living in the Phoenix/Tempe area? Am I placing too much weight on where I actually live? (I've lived in a wide variety of places both in the US and internationally, but I seem to have an affinity for northern, cooler, greener places)

It's funny, because I'm super jealous of you for this! I grew up in the Midwest (and live in Ohio currently, and have also lived in a few other states as well as Europe and Africa), but I spent most of my 20s out in the Southwest (Vegas and Phoenix). I am a sunshine girl at heart! I miss the desert so much! I almost applied to ASU's program...I really, really wanted to, but in the end, even though it broke my heart to come to this conclusion, I realized that the program just wasn't a good fit for me.

It's definitely very different living in the desert. I never thought I would end up there. I loved the PacNW and green! But I ended up loving the desert. It's beautiful in a very different way. The desert mountains at sunset are breathtaking. In my experience, most of my friends either really loved it or really hated it. And it's really, really hot in the summer, but people just work around it, just like Midwesterners work around cold and snow in the winter. However, the rest of the year the weather is amazing, so if you like hiking or climbing, you are in for a treat! Also, the road trip opportunities are great, since you will be about 4-6 hours from Vegas, San Diego and LA!

Additionally, you will probably be so busy that it won't really matter! It's much more important that you have a good fit with the program, potential advisor(s) and your cohort! (Not to mention the obvious that you will probably get more offers from elsewhere since it's still early!)

Anyone got any rejection letters or acceptance info yet? I don't have either of them... wondering whhhyyyyy...I applied community health/health education PhD with 10 public health schools.. Got interviews with U Washington and UCLA so far. nothing else tho.

I've had an interview but still no decisions either way. When did you hear from/interview with UCLA. I also applied to the CHS program also and wasn't contacted about an interview :(

Logan, a lot of people I know (Northeastern people) end up loving it in the Phoenix-area, so I'm sure you'll find your place there if you end up going. However, like Post-It, I say it's too early to think about this. Let's hope you'll hear from other schools soon! :D

University of Washington just sent out an invite =D I'm starting to love February. (Of course January was like a slow slow plunge into an endless pit. XD) I also found out two days ago from another applicant that Boston U had sent out some invites too, but I think it was just environmental and community programs?

Thank you for the encouraging and informative comments! I am very much into hiking and camping and I hadn't considered that the Phoenix area is good for that. One of the things I've missed most about California since I moved to Philadelphia is easy access to a huge amount of great mountain hiking. There is a lot of beautiful nature to enjoy in PA, but the only "mountains" are quite a drive.

Congratulations on the great news from UT-Houston!

VBD- that's good to know that Nor'easterners manage to adapt well to Phoenix.

Congratulations on U-Dub! I'm jealous! :)

In the "people are going a little nuts" department, I gave one last look to the Results page before closing the iPad and going to sleep ... and I noticed "paleontology" as a major listed. I thought, "huh? Really. People get PhDs in paleontology?" Saw that the school was NYU and before I could finish my thought, read the notes section: "Dr. Ross Geller called me today. I'm pretty stoked!"

So yeah, I should have tapped "report spam" but it made me so happy.

If any of you are reading this and don't get the Ross Geller reference, please don't tell me. I don't need any reminders that I'm *not quite* old enough to be your mother ... ;)

hey! I had the UCLA interview about one week ago. The professor mentioned that they will post the final results in three weeks to four weeks. That should be two weeks to three weeks from now on. Good luck! Please keep me posted if you hear anything. I think we are applying for the same major. Thanks!

MamaD, I'm probably one of the youngest people on this forum, and *I* got the reference (and loved it!), so I don't think you need to worry! For the third time, you've totally made my day. :)

Nice. That totally made me look it up for the happy. Upvote for you and for you since I can't upvote the original poster :D *starts Friends marathon -- the perfect distraction*

Yup so if you're surviving it in Philly, transitive property dictates that you can like it in Phoenix! XD  I liked some of the work down there and other similar climate areas, but I know that with my severe allergies + sinusitis in that climate = hell for me 9 months of the year :( I shall live vicariously through you since it seems like a fun place, of course if you end up going there XD

(sorry for double post. I have no idea how to work a quote in an edit of my previous post >.> )

I'm so excited to share my first bit of news!  I just got an email inviting me for a phone interview at Columbia (Sociomedical Sciences).  I can't decide if I'm more excited or nervous... any helpful tips/advice would be much appreciated!

congrats belafish! did you apply to the PhD or DrPH program? I would just recommend being honest, they'll ask you about your background and research and its really a chance for them to see if you're a good fit for the program and if the program is a good fit for you, they'll definitely ask you about faculty you want to work with and where you see you're career going/why you need the doctorate.

good luck!

Hi,

I am currently doing my MPH in epi from UT-Houston and have applied for a PhD in epi( Cancer epi track) at Harvard, Hopkins, Emory, Boston and UT- Houston. I have a good GRE score, and great GPAs in both undergrad and Masters. I have also worked a GRA at a Cancer Center for about a year.

I have an interview with Hopkins this week. Has anyone interviewed with them yet? I would greatly appreciate if anyone could provide inputs regarding the same.

Thanks.

Elsewhy and VBD, I'm glad I made you smile. :)

I am sooooooo over this waiting thing. I'm starting to fray a bit at the edges. WHEN, PEOPLE, WHEN???

I'm also super stressed with too much work to do, a snowstorm coming, my kids not in school tomorrow, husband working all weekend. An acceptance or rejection before the weekend would be most welcome.

I just thought of the one where Joey is filling out Ross's hospital admission form after he gets hit with a puck at the Rangers game.

Classic Friends moment, loganartemis. Good call.

MammaD, I feel you! I'm only waiting on two more and the nerves are still eating away. Stay safe from Nemo! Apparently he didn't get the memo that his movie was the one about a cute little fish, not the odd flick that Bruce Willis won all those Razzies for  ;)  I don't know about you, but I'm hunkered down for this storm!

Thank you, acdelco!  And thanks for your suggestions.  I applied to the PhD program.

I just checked the Hopkins applyyourself page, and saw that my decision was available. Waitlisted. I'm not really sure how to feel. Hopkins was a stretch for me, so I was stunned/thrilled when I got the interview invite. I don't have any sense of how many people they accepted, or how many are on the waitlist. I feel like I need to wait at least until Monday to call, since they haven't even sent a notification to check the website yet...

Does anyone has a sense of how likely it is to get accepted from the waitlist?

I still haven't heard anything from UNC. They are my absolute first choice, and I was hoping to have something definitive from Hopkins before calling UNC to check on my application.

I do have an interview with South Carolina next week. The program isn't as well known as UNC or Hopkins, but I specifically want to study rural health, and they have one of the few federally designated rural health research centers in the US, and the only one with a health disparities concentration.

Congrats on the interview! Which program at Pitt are you interviewing with

Behavioral and Community Health Sciences... If they ever actually schedule me... I'm turning into THAT person lol Def googled the lady that emailed me to make sure she was legit.

Though it's not exactly the news you had hoped for, being waitlisted at Hopkins is pretty awesome.  I've heard/know of plenty people getting admitted off of waitlists... since people usually apply to at least a couple PhD programs and can decline admissions for so many reasons... I would say your chances are good, depending on how long the wait list is.  From my experience, admissions tend to be pretty transparent about their waitlist.  So if you're curious about where you stand, I recommend getting in touch with them once you get official notification.

Your post prompted me to check my Hopkins application and has left me perplexed.  No decision is available yet, but I scrolled down and saw something listed under Other Supporting Documents at the bottom of the page... it says: Final Official Transcript Upon Admission: Not Received.  It definitely wasn't there before... so of course I'm reading into it and freaking out a little :)  The right course of action for just about anything, haha.

I totally understand this reaction haha. I would read into it exactly as you are doing. Best wishes!

Looks like UNC posted some decisions for Epi. I'm afraid to look. Pulled an all-nighter last night, kids have no school today, and a rejection is gonna sting but I guess I have to look!

congrats MPH(D?) I applied to that program too but haven't heard back at all :( , that's weird they won't schedule you--maybe give them a call to see if your email just got lost in the shuffle?

I'd say check MammaD, its good to know either way. Good luck!
