Acceptance Freakout Thread

Recommended Posts

@Two Expressos, I would be seriously surprised it you didn't get in anywhere -- keep your hopes up until you know it's over!

Thanks, I'll try!  Why would you be seriously surprised if I don't get in anywhere, though?

Lolz, I wish I could join you all in being nervous about U Penn, but I'm not holding out even the slightest bit of hope that I'll be accepted there. Nor do I really care. Whenever they get around to rejecting me, I'll take it with zero surprise. But aaahh, I REALLY hope that someone here gets good news, soon! I like sharing in other people's joy. :)

This.  I'm totally cool with my impending UPenn rejection.  They got over 600 applications this year, it's an Ivy league school, and I'm not Ivy league material, haha.  I am, however, extremely worried about my last program...

Hey, guys.  I have a question:  if you are waitlisted, and ultimately accepted, can you negotiate funding at all?  Or can you not because you were only waitlisted in the first place?  I've been waitlisted at a school that I really like, but I have an outright acceptance at another school that's quite a bit more lucrative.  If I do get accepted at the other school, do I have a chance of negotiating a better financial package?

It might depend on how long it takes for your waitlist to convert into an acceptance. If you were finally accepted some time after April 15, for example, you are probably not as likely to negotiate for better funding if you were accepted much earlier than that, I imagine.

This seems likely... but you can still try....

Just got an email from one of the professors I mentioned in my SoP for UIUC. She wants to "entice" me to accept the offer, and she complimented a specific part of my writing sample.

It's like getting accepted all over again. :)

I keep rereading this e-mail. I've been accepted to my top choice with a seriously amazing funding offer. I'm supposed to call tomorrow, wow. I thought that this season was going to be a learning experience and a choice between a poorly funded program and a round two. It really isn't over until its over! They even made a bunch of references to my papers in the offer; they love me, they really love me...

Can anyone claim the Columbia acceptance? And if you can, was it a personalized email or a mass one? This seems like a sign that they are finished making their decisions, in which case I just want to know if not getting that email equates to being rejected.

I posted the Columbia acceptance! (I feel a little shy about these boards, but I'm definitely a lurker.)

It was a pretty generic email from Alan Stewart, the DGS, but he CCed the professor I am most interested in working with, who then emailed me a few minutes later with a much more personalized email. So... somewhere in between the two? I'm sorry, I honestly don't know if they're finished notifying or not. If I had to guess, I would say no, since there aren't a lot of posts up yet, and I know they're a pretty big program.

Best of luck, everyone!! (I applied to Cornell, Berkeley, Chicago, and Virginia too, and watched all of those acceptances go up without hearing a peep... I was pretty convinced I was out of the running until today!)

Can someone claim the latest UPenn acceptance, the one via phone from the DGS? Like what time was the call? I don't know, give me anything! Nervous breakdown ensuing over here.

I would like to know more info too. Most importantly, was the number blocked?

After two years of posting on these threads, rejoicing in others' acceptances, commiserating in others' rejections, and constantly questioning whether or not I really could be a scholar, I'm ecstatic to report:

I'VE JUST BEEN WAITLISTED AT UNC-CHAPEL HILL!

Yay! I am out of upvotes, but I've been rooting for you! Congrats on the good news; I believe this is just the first!
