I think you guys should also consider universities in Europe and Latin America (if you have the language skills). I have a friend that didn't get accepted in the USA/Canada, but she applied to a few European colleges and got in! She gladly lives the full London experience.

If you want to keep studying, keep applying to schools! :3

Does anyone know if there's a thread listing MA programs with admissions deadlines that have not passed (or something like Northeastern's "special student" program)?

Sorry, can't help with that, but if you don't mind a bit of product placement, I would recommend you check out the program that I'm currently in. It's a diversity initiative here at Pitt, but diversity means MANY things so you may be eligible. It has been an awesome learning experience, and as far as I know everyone who's done it so far has gone on to really great PhD programs. It's basically been my "gap year" after the last app cycle epic failed.

Thanks, dazed. That looks great! I was really bummed about the Pitt rejection, so I will definitely look into this. Seriously, thanks a ton!

No problem! It's been really great; if things don't work out for you with apps, I hope you can make use of it. I really think getting my feet wet in graduate classes and getting an LOR from a professor here helped me immensely.

If you don't mind, I may PM you tomorrow for more information. This could be just what I'm looking for, and I definitely have a "diverse" background.

Ah, the Hotel Metal Bridge Program!  I'm glad to see you're enjoying it.  That program is one of my many backup plans, though I imagine getting accepted is quite competitive.

But I'm really pulling for my UNC waitlist to turn into an acceptance.  That would be fucking amazing.

No problem, I'm happy to answer any questions you have!

I'm still holding out hope for your UNC waitlist, too!

Also, if anyone of you guys can speak Spanish. The University of Puerto Rico has some good graduate programs in English, Comp Lit, Caribbean Lit and Hispanic Studies.

Just in case you were considering, a lower tuition school with just a $20 application fee.

The "Spring Admissions" thread seems to be building up to this conversation.

Any thoughts on an MA form the College of Charleston?

I'm seriously considering applying. My family is (hopefully) moving down to Charleston in April and I really love it down there. However, I'm having all these paranoid apprehensions about a) committing to a Master's program instead of reapplying to PhD programs next cycle and b ), and this will sound ridiculous, but I just earned my BA at a Top 20 school and I'm worried that now getting an MA from anything less than a Top 20 school (or even a Top 50) will hurt my chances of ever getting into a Top 20 school again (which is probably stupid because where I got my BA didn't help me this time around).

All that said, however, the campus at College of Charleston is gorgeous, Charleston is awesome, there's a possibility of receiving funding through an assistantship, and, in my case, there are a lot of professors there for my fields of interest, and it would mean actually returning to school in August. So I am sorely tempted.

I'm in almost the exact situation! (BA from Rutgers, with one professor who advised against it and one who encouraged it.) I'm applying for an M.A. more for the holistic understanding of the discipline rather than for the degree. I want to attend some conferences, get some teaching experience, ect. Where did you do undergrad?

University of Michigan. I plan on discussing it with a couple of my professors/LOR writers this week to see what their advice is. I'm also pretty lacking in the teaching/conference department, so the possibility of a teaching assistantship in the second year of the program is attractive. However, I think the results board has shown that an MA, teaching experience, and conferences aren't always enough to give you an extra push into being accepted (which is frustrating to say the least), so, in a sense, it could be a waste of valuable years. On the other hand, at least I'd have my MA and would be back in school come August instead of being out of academia for the next 18 months (which, if I'm not accepted next cycle either could turn into much longer).

You aren't as likely to run into random possibilities through networking, but there are a ton of calls of papers here, and a number are for publications: http://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/

Do you have to present the paper personally at a conference? I can't afford to attend international conferences. Or do they publish your paper if approved, even if you don't attend the conference? Sorry, I just don't understand how it works ?

If I get absolutely no funding for any of the MA programs I applied for... my Plan B is to move back to where my alma mater is... find a shitty job, and work my way through a part time CompSci BS.

You have to physically be present at the conference and present your paper in order to record the conference presentation on your CV (without a guilty conscious anyway). There are a few conferences that may allow the presenter to have someone else read the paper in your absence but that's very rare in the Humanities.

This.

However, if you look through the calls, though most are for conferences, some are for journals or collections.
