fairweather Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Thank you so much. You're the second UGA person to reach out to me on here. It means a lot. Thanks. Hell yeah! Glad others love it as much as I did. Best community I could have asked for.
Loric Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Do you actually have anything useful to post other than sarcastic uniformed comments? Did you even look at the link? Hi.. this is the universe, i'm here to tell you it's not all about you. Erpnope, worldly and ChurchLover 1 2
Kelly Anna Yllek Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Ahhhhh invited to phone interview for Friday. Its only been a week since I submitted the app. It was awhile before they got to interview part last year. Was I like third string last year and first pick this year? My friends keep comparing it to football drafts but I don't really understand it. Erpnope and smartstrategy 2
Alpha-numeric Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Email from University of Chicago yesterday. Invitation to critiques and an interview. Kelly Anna Yllek 1

Alpha-numeric Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Congratulations all around! Great to hear responses coming in. Good Luck with the interviews. Thanks. I was a little surprised to hear anything so soon. Apparently those early December deadline ARE good for something.
Alpha-numeric Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 yep, see you there. Cool. It sounds like all the interviewees will be there. Email even sounded like there may be a free lunch involved.
pulpandink Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 It's encouraging to hear that people on the forum are being invited to interview--congrats! Only 4 of my schools interview, so it's going to be a long, mostly silent couple of months. I am trying not go completely mad.
bannedinbc Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Cool. It sounds like all the interviewees will be there. Email even sounded like there may be a free lunch involved. yes, after purchasing a plane ticket, the free lunch will be a nice consolation. any idea how many they interview?
EDay27 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I'd like to recommend USF Tampa (University of South Florida) as a great interdisciplinary program that is flying under the radar. http://art.usf.edu/content/templates/?a=1180&z=27 They offer good funding, full tuition waiver and lots of opportunity for teaching in second and third year. Young faculty (check out their bios) many came from SAIC and you can study with several faculty members on a one to one basis per semester. The program is interdisciplinary and smaller....about ten MFA students per year. They have a contemporary art Museum on campus and Graphicstudio. http://www.graphicstudio.usf.edu/gs/gs_about.html Tampa is located about 4 hours from Miami (Art Basel) and is a two hour flight from New York. They have a summer study program in Paris with an optional trip to London. Their application deadline is January 15th this year. No snow and great weather! http://art.arts.usf.edu/content/templates/?a=1181&z=27 Best of luck to all in your applications! Hey seamonkey, thanks for the info! Are you currently attending? I just applied to USF's program, for many of the reasons you've mentioned. The alumni and faculty work is fresh, the funding is fantastic, and the opportunities to teach are massively appealing. Living in Michigan for the last 3 years, I've grown to hate the snow, the slush, and the potholes. Location/weather isn't the biggest factor for me, but Tampa sounds lovely.
lapintadora Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Oh, Lord, now the wait. Applied to MFA painting programs at WVU, GWU, VCU, Penn State, and UMD. Needed places with good funding and that were within a certain geographical distance... that definitely limited my options!
evd Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Hello, Is anyone familiar with SUNY Purchace MFA painting program? The proximity to NY is a plus, so this usually means several artists will be coming in for studio, talks, shows and crits, however I am not sure of how much financially they offer MFA students. Anyone know? thanks The Purchase MFA is interdisciplinary, but the last time I looked they seemed to have a pretty decent faculty. Also their funding seems to be fairly sufficient. They offer tuition aid/remission, stipend, guaranteed loans, etc... They're also good with teaching assistantships. Not to mention how cheap the tuition is, even out-of-state.
Kelly Anna Yllek Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Yay interview today. I have the time slot scheduled off as a break from work, time zones mean the interview time is during my lunch break while its in their morning. I just got over the flu and should be good to go for talking about how great I am.... 'cept I now have pneumonia. Such great things happening for me and I am as weak as a kitten. Thank God its phone interview. I can hardly move from my chair.
kafralal Posted January 17, 2014 Author Posted January 17, 2014 well...good luck Kelly!...and let us know how it goes. Kelly Anna Yllek 1
FAR Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Hello all, I got an issue with the recommendation letters. Not sure if this happened to someone else. One of the persons recommending me said that he sent the letters a while ago, but in the online application doesnt show up. The schools are Yale, Bard, and USC. In fact, another person sent the letters to the three schools but at Bard it doesnt show up either. Did you have any problems like that? In the case of missing a recommendation ... do you think like the application wont be reviewed by the panel. My best
michelle sumaray Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 What types of questions should people expect from a phone interview?
Kelly Anna Yllek Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Was so exhausted having to talk for my phone interview, I felt it went poorly but I know that is just because of sickness. After the initial chitchat, I had visited in the fall so I was remembered (!), I was asked how my process from concept to final product happens. My work as a final piece is a textile even though I am a photographer, so why I do that at all was asked next. Its a bit of a blur now, a few hours passed, I was asked how would I place myself categorically in the contemporary art world and what my influences are. The latter sounded more like asking me if I knew my art history, which parts of my SOP had already wrote out so it was kinda simple rehashing of it. bandito 1
bandito Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Wow, a few hours is brutal. Did you only apply to UO?
Kelly Anna Yllek Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Oh no! It was 30 minute call, it was just a few hours ago. I am just very exhausted from just sitting at work. Breathing is a chore. I only applied to UO but to two different programs. I really fell in love with the school when I visited. I honestly don't want to be anywhere else so I didn't bother to apply anywhere else this year. This may or may not be a bad idea come April 15th.
bandito Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Oh haha that makes sense. And yea hopefully that extra focus works out for you in the end and that you feel better soon. Totally jealous you heard back so soon. Makes me wish I applied to University of Chicago or somewhere with an early deadline.
Alpha-numeric Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 yes, after purchasing a plane ticket, the free lunch will be a nice consolation. any idea how many they interview? I've heard they interview 30 people and take 8-10. Usually 8.
worldly Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 What types of questions should people expect from a phone interview? Someone posted this last year. Hope it helps and best of luck to everyone on their interviews! Here is a link to the thread and I pasted some of the questions below. How does your work fit in with the contemporary art world/scene?
