Am I too late to join the stats party?

GPA: 3.98, 4.00 (major)

GRE: 167V, 154Q, 5.5AW

Interests: Philosophy of Religion, Continental Philosophy, and Wittgenstein

I'm coming from a no-name private liberal arts school without even a philosophy major, so I know my chances are extremely low. While I feel good about my GRE scores, personal statement, and letters of rec, my limited exposure to philosophy means I only have a moderate writing sample, comprised of 2 solid, but shorter, papers. I'm including some major safety schools in this application round.

I'm applying to MA's and PhD's in both philosophy and religious studies. Right now, I'm applying to Vanderbilt, Miami University, and UGA for philosophy. My 5 other apps are for religious studies.

Right now, I'm pretty much willing to sell my soul to whoever gives me the most money. But to answer your question plainly, it entirely depends on the specific department. My number one choice is a religion department, but the vast majority of the faculty are clearly influenced by continental philosophy, so it'd be a near-perfect fit. However, I've only run into philosophy programs where there's a scholar with interests in both phil. of religion and Wittgenstein. So for me it's less about department lines, and just whichever program has the best fit.

Great stats! Philosophy of Religion and Wittgenstein seem like an interesting pairing. May I ask what you are interested in specifically in Philosophy of Religion? My own interests in philosophy started there, especially with divine hiddenness and the problem of evil.

There's another Rutgers acceptance posted. There are no stats, and so there's no telling whether it's fake. Can anyone claim it?

It's pretty early in the season. I'm skeptical.

Oh this is getting good! I'm guessing fake but who knows... Loric/Dfindley/someoneelse is probably at it again. Maybe Dfindley will claim it?

Hello everyone! Coming a bit late to the party, just discovered this forum. Good luck, and we'll wait it out together!

Looks like you're applying to some good schools, but you'll be missing out on any good Chinese philosophy programs (except for Duke, which has David Wong I guess). What's your area of interest in Chinese thought?

Hmm... although I'm not necessarily committed to schools strong in Chinese philosophy, I did apply to schools that I think would be very good for working with Chinese texts, in addition to Duke: Utah, UBC, Riverside, and Berkeley. Hutton is at Utah, Slingerland at UBC, Raphals and Schwitzgebel at Riverside are willing to supervise students with interests in Chinese philosophy, and Shun just returned to Berkeley, which also has Nylan in the history department and Czikszentmihalyi in the Chinese department.  I also applied to schools that have outstanding East Asian departments (or have cross-enrollment with nearby universities with strengths in that area.) So, even if no one in the department has a specialty in Chinese philosophy (and few departments have specialists, really), I will still be able to read and discuss Chinese texts at any one of those schools.

I am interested in moral psychology, which is how I ended up with an interest in East Asian philosophy. One of my classes included the Mengzi on a syllabus and I fell in love with the text. Anyway, it's a very small field, so I'm pleased to make your acquaintance!

Yours as well. I'm not headed anywhere strong in Chinese phil, so you'll be better off at any of those places than I will. I'll probably have to do the work on my own, as a side interest. I decided I was more interested in Post-Kantian and Continental philosophy, so that's how I picked my places.

Hey everyone. Just saw this thread.

3.6 GPA (Calculated from my two schools: 3.22 Freshman and Sophomore year; 4.0 Junior and Senior — Let's just say I started caring a little late in the game. Major GPA = 4.0)

166V/155Q/5.0A

M.A. in Church History from an Ivy-affiliated Seminary

M.A. doesn't use a 4.0 scale, but I suppose the equivalent would be about 3.9.

I was the Philosophy Club President, graduated Summa Cum Laude, got the Best Philosophy Senior award, and got this really prestigious award that was only given to the top three students per graduating class (sort of like having 3 valedictorian awards, two of which don't require speaking at graduation). Phi Sigma Tau and presented at three undergraduate conferences. I read Greek, Hebrew, and French — SLOWLY. My writing sample is 17 pages on one of Augustine's particular appropriations of Plato (instead of just vaguely saying Augustine shares ontological similarities with Plato); and I think it's pretty good — and I don't think its main topic has ever been discussed. My letters were solid (I've seen two of them).

AOI: Nietzsche (and Existentialism/Phenomenology), Ancient, Late Antique-EarlyMedieval

I think Austin and BU are the only schools I'm applying to that are ranked on PGR.

I've been lurking for a while. Just wanted to formally introduce myself and to wish everyone GOOD LUCK!

And I really wish more people included these sorts of stats in their acceptance/rejection listings; it would be so helpful.

I'm a little afraid that my verbal isn't quite high enough; and I wonder if my no-name liberal arts college will affect me. Also, my letters are from relatively unknown Professors.

I have no fucking idea whether or not I'm going to get into anything. Less if I'll get a job when I'm out. But it's this or law. And I really, really don't want to be a lawyer.

I think a decent number of us wear our stats on our sleeves. That's an interesting list of schools there. No Chicago? They have some decent Nietzsche people there.

I'm trying to stay with my girlfriend (soon-to-be fiancé) who's applying to this really niche field in special education that doesn't have licensed programs in Chicago. I've wanted to kill her for this since I started researching possible schools. I would've killed someone to be at Chicago or Northwestern, and one of my Professors is well-connected with a few of their faculty members.

Austin would guarantee a job, and I'd love to work with White and Woodruf. The only reason I applied to Baylor was because of Dr. Schultz, whose AOIs I could've written (besides the feminism)! And Stony Brook is like 45 minutes from my house. — I think the other five make perfect sense though, right?

totally wish more people were open about their stats. It would be a much less confusing process if we had some sort of data about past application seasons. Cool interests/stats, and good luck on your applications.

Yeah, for the most part. Though why Emory? It's mostly French philosophy and Pragmatism. Is it because of your interests in Phenomenology and "Existentialism"? Do you lean French or German?

There's an Ohio State acceptance on the results page - is it real? Just looked and the earliest from last year was January 26th.

Are you applying to philosophy programs?

No idea if it is real - but I'm a bit wary that it says "website". Isn't it usually the case that one receives an e-mail/call before their website status is updated?

Dammit. Beat me to the punch.
