danaofdoom Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 No one seems to want to be the first to break the silence today. What do we think? Will we hear from Chicago today? Penn? Any place? Pretty sure the school I'm waiting on is off today. Do you know if Chicago and Penn are open?
jellyfish1 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 If a school is off do you think that means no news? Or does it mean profs will have extra time to send out emails/meet since there are no classes?
HrdyWordy Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 You all are doing really interesting work! Sarab (and/or other linguistics people)- my girlfriend studied languages in college and is fluent in Russian, German, French, English, and Mandarin. She's looking for work right now, but eventually wants to go to grad school for something, but she's not sure what. I suggested linguistic anthropology because it seems to fit her interests. Do you have any articles/books you recommend for an intro to the subject or something? You can pm me if that's easier. I am not a linguist, but I am intensely interested in language. I speak a few, read a lot about languages and an anthro friend recommended that I read Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle by Daniel Everett, Dean of Arts & Sciences and Linguistics Prof at Bentley Uni. It was fantastic. I highly recommend it as a fun, yet academic read.
daykid Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) From what i could tell both penn and chicago are open today. The question is, are they simply waiting to notify or are there decisions left to be made or bureaucracy left to traverse? If it's just the former, could be any time. if it is the latter, then the school needs to be open for anything to happen. I would think. Edited February 17, 2014 by daykid
strudelle Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Ooooo good point archaeostudent. My poi called me at around 5:30 her time (aka after school) and others have sent emails late at night. I bet campuses being closed won't effect POIs contacting people if the committee has already met.
HrdyWordy Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 3 acceptances already posted for today! Maybe this will be a week filled with good news for ALL!!
dreams1214 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Hey Everyone, Do you think it would be a bad idea to email a POI to express how strong my interest is?
daykid Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Dreams, I wouldn't. Just try to be patient. I don't think you want to come across as desperate.
dreams1214 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Thanks Daykid. I just really want this, lol.
lackingpatience Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I just had a skype meeting with a couple POIs at one of my schools. Waah! I think it went well but I'm still mentally dissecting everything. I stumbled a bit on one of the questions about my future plans....why can't I edit real life?
dreams1214 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I am sure you did great! What sho9lls did you apply, to, if you don't mind me asking?

lackingpatience Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I am sure you did great! What sho9lls did you apply, to, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks!! I applied to 9 programs all together (yikes) but the skype meeting was for Boston University.

I think it went well but I'm still mentally dissecting everything. I stumbled a bit on one of the questions about my future plans....why can't I edit real life? Why indeed? I was so nervous during my phone interview, I'm positive that my POI thought I was a crazy person, or at least an idiot. I mean, it probably didn't go so badly, but in my memory it was horrible. I wish I could go back in time and change it.
laurissimo Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Has anyone heard from UPenn? Nothing here...
skylarking Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 A friend applied in a different department and their results keep getting delayed because of all the snow. You'll probably have to wait a bit more for U Penn

I will bet so much money it went better than you think. My initial interview with my POI seemed like it was terrible and I completely wrote off any chance of being accepted. I legitimately thought they hated me. And then I randomly got accepted anyway. What?

What? I really hope that's how it was with my interview. Today is seriously dragging on. I really want to hear back from him!!!
SnappyCat Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Thanks!! I applied to 9 programs all together (yikes) but the skype meeting was for Boston University. Who are your POIs at BU? I applied to the program and was shortlisted, but haven't received any interview requests.
sarab Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Not many results today... or maybe I just don't see any results because they're not the my results? Hehe. Let's hope decisions pick up tomorrow!
FaultyPowers Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 And all but one of the ones posted today seem to have been received earlier. I guess the holiday was a bigger deal than we were hoping it would be!
colalalala Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Got 2 more rejections over the past week...now I am in a weird dilemma...part of me want to know but part of me just don't wanna hear bad news anymore
ecologaia Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Everyone is doing such a good job of staying positive! I know i should be too, but sometimes... do any of you legitimately get angry about how long some schools wait to send what must be rejection letters in certain circumstances? It's one thing to drag out an interview process, or have a late deadline, or legitimately be waiting on funding decisions... but some of them have these policies about ONLY sending rejections snail mail and others just seems to inconsiderately put it on the end of their to-dos to send out the "sorry a million people applied and then during interviews each one of you metaphorically gave birth to a unique small miracle and it took us this long to pull names from a fluffy hat, union issues and all..." sigh. i'm having some feelings today.
