So..

GRE $185, 3 extra score reports $75

+ 7 app fees

= $810

This even seems to be on the low end and I thought it was ridiculous. This south park kind of comes to mind...

Since no one else has offered a similar perspective yet, I want any low-income readers to know that it's possible! My FAFSA EFC has been <$15 each year of college so I qualify for almost every need-based waiver/grant under the sun.

So far it has cost me about $225 from registering for the GRE and ordering one score report.

I was out of the state and couldn't get a GRE fee waiver in time to take the test but it took me only one short visit to my financial aid office to get the waiver and another short visit to get letters written for application fee waiver requests for different schools. You can get them for the subject tests too. I also only applied to 5 schools so I only had to order one report, if any...I can't remember if it was 4 or 5 free at the time you take the test. My school also doesn't charge to mail transcripts if you request them to be sent via snail mail and if you request under a certain amount per day.

Theoretically if I was more prepared I could be where I am without spending a single dollar. The only thing I'm concerned about now is not being reimbursed the full amount of travel expenses for interviews. (Super relieved to hear that I shouldn't buy a suit as I'd look overdressed anyways)

If costs are a huge issue and barrier for you, there may still be hope! Make sure you look into the different fee waiver request requirements for your programs and the GRE far in advance and hopefully you can take advantage of them!

220 for applications to two schools

185 for GRE

25 for GRE prep material

23 for transcripts

About 453 total.

185 for GRE

12 for transcripts

120 for application fees to two schools

Total = $317.  Not bad.  It's good I did this over a span of a few months rather than all at once.

I applied to 7 schools:

subject GRE: $150
GRE: $185
GRE prep materials: $20
Transcript fees: $27
sending GRE scores: $175
application fees: $525

Grand Total: $1082

Man!  Never added it up in one spot before!

3 GRE tests

5 applications (at least one was free...)

So many transcripts

Nearly 1000$. Damn ETS took a chunk. At least I did decent on them...

I actually had to think about this one:

1) GRE -- $185

2) GRE prep course -- $100

3) GRE score reports -- $225 ($25 x 9)

4) Application fees -- $0 (fee waivers through scholarship programs, thankfully)

5) Official Transcripts -- $18 ($2 x 9)

TOTAL?  $428

not TOO bad...  -_-

Coming close to $1300. I took the GRE 3 times, had to re-submit GRE scores to a few schools since they didn't receive them the first time, also had to re-submit ALL of my transcripts (THANKS USPS FOR LOSING MY MAIL). Transcripts are $20 a pop!

GRE prep materials: $90ish
GRE: $185
GRE score reports: $175
Application Fees for 8 Programs: $551 (Yes, $551. UMW's $56 application fee made me chuckle.)
Transcripts: $0 (Both my undergrad and grad institutions were private and only charge if you need 'em overnighted.)

Grand total: $1000

Or, you know, a month and a half's rent, 13 months' cell phone bills, two and a half years' internet bills, or just shy of ten and a half years' worth of a Netflix subscription.

I tried to do all of these things, but I encountered several barriers:

I was technically a junior until the beginning of this Spring semester because it's based on credit hours so I didn't qualify for the GRE fee waiver.

None of the schools I applied to had application fee waivers that I could find.

I had transcripts from 2 different schools both of which charged $7 per transcript.

I can generally find the cheapest way to do things, but it didn't work out so well with applying to graduate school.

GRE prep materials: $0

GRE: $185

GRE score reports: $25

Application Fees for 4 Programs: $225

Transcripts: $57

Grand total: $492

Total I spent on 14 application fees; GRE, GRE Subject Test,  and score  for both reports; transcripts (from 5 universities); and mailing required info to the schools that required it: $3400.00

Yep, $3400,00.

Thirty four hundred dollars.

I hate my life.

Wow. That's unbelievable.

I am sure it will be worth it once you are accepted given your many publications and stats.

For me:

GRE prep materials: $40 (Couple of books)

GRE: $185 (No repeats)

GRE score reports: $225 (9 Score Reports)

Application Fees: $550

Transcripts: $55

Grand total: $1055

Since the costs were spread out, it didn't seem like this much of an investment. Fingers crossed I recieve a good financial aid package!

Sylark,

I have no doubt that you’ll be successful. It just feels so agonizing to wait around and find out.

test prep materials - 110$

GRE  test - 185$ (used 2 free score reports well)

TOEFL test - 160$ (used 3 free score reports)

GRE score reports - 4 * 25 = 100$

TOEFL reports - 3*18 = 54$

transcripts - 8*6 = 48$

mailing costs = 80$

application fees = (100+85+75+75+56+25) = 516$

total expenses 1253$ ~ to 72,000 INR

I could live an entire year in India with this amount.

GRE: $185 x 2 - $370
Test rescheduling: $50 x 2 - $100

Test prep: $ 400
App fees: $70

Total: $ 940

Hadn't calculated it before. Applying to grad school is expensive! And all of this to apply to ONE university.

$700-$800? Probably more. I had to stop keeping track because it was making me angry.

Posted

Including the GRE prep book I bought, and all GRE score reporting, transcripts, application fees: $1196 applying to 9 schools.

This does not include gifts to letter writers, which was an additional 50 or so.

Posted

Application Fees: $425

GRE Prep Course: $875

GRE: $185

GRE Scores (4 additional) x $25 = $100

Transcripts: $45

TOTAL: $1630

Ugh.
