F-S-Y Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 What is it about UH this year by the way? I don't see anyone posting? I have just posted my application result in the forum. Just found a decision letter stating the admission. It was signed by the associate dean of graduate studies at the college. I don't know whether more information from the department will come in a few days.
ssynny Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I'm out this season. Both people that were accepted to work with my POI accepted their offers, so all of us on the waitlist were rejected. I'm really bummed....

tuff Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Well, if anyone else here is doing atmos, I suppose I wanted to update saying that I have taken up UC Davis' offer. It was my top program from the start, and I got a two-year fellowship there! I hope everyone else starts getting good news soon! This season seems rough for you geo* kids :/ Congrats on making the big decision!
tuff Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) I don't really know how the process works, but I will re-emphasize that my POI contacted me and told me this. It is not official and my online status still says under review. I know it's a different school, but FWIW, my online status still says "Submitted". I was officially accepted almost a month ago, and I have already officially accepted the offer (with new student ID). Not sure when that would change, to be honest. Edited to add: Congrats on UT, Lorde!!!! Edited March 22, 2015 by tuff IamLorde 1
ssynny Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) Thanks guys.... Yeah I'll try again next year, but it sucks being so close and just missing it. My POI has been really supportive and sent me a list of schools and job sites he thinks might be of interest, which was the sweetest thing. He keeps telling how competitive and qualified I was as an applicant, but the department just prefers people that have a masters. There's one department that he sent me that I actually really like and it's very similar to what I would have been doing in Florida. And the best part is that there's several people doing that kind of work, not just one. Maybe if I'm lucky, I can make a contact there. It's probably too early to get in touch with them, but maybe a miracle will happen and they're still accepting spots? Lol who am I kidding? It's late March I'm trying to be positive but goddamn this application process is draining. It wasn't nearly this bad for undergrad. Edit: Also, I appreciate the support everyone! Contact people at this school you've mentioned! I know some programs are continuing to accept applicants
teddybrosevelt Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Some smaller schools accept applicants up until the fall semester begins! Maybe explain how you've just found out how you compatible your research interests are with many of their faculty?
ssynny Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Really?? Ok! I'll email my POI and see if he specifically knows someone from there. If not, I guess I have some emails to write. Thank you . IamLorde 1

Edited to add: Congrats on UT, Lorde!!!! Thanks Tuff! Yeah, I have given up on worrying about the online status marker. I have not accepted the offer yet, as I am still waiting to hear back from Duke and I am scheduled to visit UNM next week. Plus I have 3 other schools that haven't responded at all. I am assuming rejection, but I just wish they would tell me something. The uncertainty is getting to me, especially since I don't really enjoy my current job. But I know I should be happy that I have options- just stressing about choosing one! But there is still time to consider

I would check their admissions deadlines and such, but some schools just don't receive enough quality applicants to fill all of their positions. I think how you articulate your emails will be important. For instance, you didn't fail to apply initially not because you thought their program was inferior or something, but because you were unaware how many faculties interests are well aligned with yours, yada yada.
sjoh197 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I swear, if Ok State doesn't respond this week... I am going to lose my mind. I know their Feb 1st deadline is late, but they aren't UT Austin, they aren't getting 600 applications to wade through.

Geo1993 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Does anyone know anything about CSM? It's been a while since I've heard from my advisers. I've yet to be rejected, but I've also seen a lot of acceptances.
TootinOnAFlizoot Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 What is going on with UC Irvine's ESS? It looks like they still haven't sent a single acceptance/rejection letter and we're about 3 weeks away from April 15th. I've emailed them to ask for a status update and still haven't heard back.

That was mid last week by my POI. Not sure about geophysics and petroleum and such...

I didn't even talk about admissions and unfortunately it's not a small department... Hope my chances aren't still crap.

columbia09 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) He hasn't replied yet :\ I'm sorry to hear about your application season. Will you be reapplying ? Have you gotten any offers ? By the way my POI from VT emailed me today saying that they could accept me without funding but I turned it down. Edited March 24, 2015 by columbia09
ssynny Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I guess I'll reapply. I keep hearing from professors that I'm very competitive, but clearly it's not enough. I'm gonna pursue my dreams but maybe I'll actually apply to more schools. Only did two this year and rejected from both. I'm glad you heard back from VT!

Yea I had a lot of professors tell me that too especially this one from VT. I would agree to apply to a lot more schools. If I was reapplying I would definitely try to improve my GRE since they were s major problem for most of my schools. I would've gotten a lot more offers if they were a little bit higher. It doesn't matter at this point though I got in somewhere with funding and that's all that matters in the end
