Hello everyone

I received an admit in Petroleum Engg. from University of Tulsa but had the following queries regarding the admission process. I would be grateful if you could answer them for me :

  1. Though I applied to the thesis-based Masters, but I have been accepted into the non-thesis Masters program. Is such a program any good? If yes, then what are the prospects (job, research)? If not, then is it generally possible to get the program changed at a later point of time? ( I have the option of deferring the admission till Fall '16)
  2. Are students in non-thesis based Masters generally awarded funding? Since I am an international student, funding is essential for me to go anywhere.
  3. How is University of Tulsa for Petro? I primarily applied here because it had a cheap application fee (around $30 I guess, but they have been the most helpful with my application)
  4. On the whole, is enrolling in Grad School in Petro at this time a good idea?

Thanks in advance

Exactly the same thing happened to me, I have been accepted to MEng to the UofTulsa. As far as I know, there is no funding for MEng. I`m an international like you and I can`t accept the admission offer without funding

Made my final decisions today!

I accepted a PhD offer at CU Boulder in geological sciences with guaranteed RA funding during the school year plus double pay RA summers my first two years! I'm so excited! I got a great feeling from the department, my POI, and his students when I visited back in March. It felt like everyone genuinely wanted me there and wanted to support me in my grad studies. Plus Boulder is beautiful and has great culture and awesome food and bars and I'm really into backpacking, mountain climbing, paddling, and hiking so it's pretty much perfect for all of that.

I withdrew my application from UCSD Scripps after sitting on their waitlist for months. I decided it wasn't worth it especially considering I had the better offer from Boulder.

I turned down PhD offers at Purdue (with TA funding), Virginia Tech (with TA funding), and UT Austin (with fellowship funding).

Good luck to everyone else on here as April 15th approaches!

Just curious what made you choose UC Boulder over a place like UT Austin where you have fellowship funding?

The reasons moochie listed (department fit, quality of life) seemed like compelling reasons to choose CU Boulder to me. I'm not sure a (presumably unrestricted) fellowship is much more desirable than RA funding, though I guess that depends on the advisor relationship and how far afield the RA work is from the thesis work. Were you in the same position, would that trump the other considerations?

Moochie, congrats on making a decision!

Congrats Moochie!! I believe we crossed paths during the PSW at UT, so I wish you the best of luck at CU Boulder  ;)

I have also finally reached my decision. I visited UNM this past weekend and it was a pleasure meeting the faculty and students. It seems like a really nice institution, but lacks the resources that UT has, so I will be declining their offer.

This weekend I also discovered that I am waitlisted at Duke. Apparently they had 3 open positions and I was number 4 on the list. However, all 3 initial offers have been accepted. So,  they are keeping my app open in case additional funding comes available. Knowing I was next in line, makes it hurt a little less. Although the program wasn't the best research fit anyway, so maybe it wasn't meant to be.

So, after weighing my options, I have decided that I will be attending UT Austin this fall!! Considering it was my first choice when I applied, I am pretty stoked  :D

Best of luck to everyone else during this final week of decisions!!!

I haven't posted in a while, but I will post an update:

I am being flown out to visit one of my prospective schools in two weeks, everything paid for by the school. I was accepted, albeit without funding. I would assume my chances of receiving a financial offer after the April 15 deadline must be high considering they are doing this for me? Thoughts?

I officially accepted my offer from Montana today. I am very excited. My advisor is terrific. I told her that I had concerns about living on the low stipend, and she worked to increase the offer substantially. I can't wait to go to Missoula!

Congrats on the decisions, Moochie, Letshike, Doodle, Lorde, and Darkstar! After long weeks of deliberation, and weighing all the pros and cons with going to a "2000 and late" school (should have applied to Southern Golf Coast Delaware Tech), I have decided to accept Stanford's offer. Go Cardinals!

*edited to add:

Um, why is there a quota for positive votes? :)

Right? I've had to be strategic about rationing them so when people make decisions and post about them I still have positive votes left to give as congratulations!

University of Massachusetts at Amherst is the only school where no decision has still not been made on my application. Anyone hear from them ?

Am I still the only one waiting on Rice and University of Houston?

Email your adviser at rice they should have answers by now

Got accepted to San Diego State with TA package today but they do not waive tuition and want a decision by 4-24. I am still waiting on funding details from San Jose (details should come before end of April said grad advisor there) and a decision from UW. I am also on the waitlist at 2 schools. Do I contact San Jose? UW? 2 waitlisted schools? Not sure how to go about this.

If you do get a TA from SJSU, they do waive tuition(i remember it being a 75% tuition waiver). I really don't like the SJSU campus, so it's a good idea to visit if you haven't yet. I'd email Manny at SJSU and ask for a update, he's pretty easy going. SDSU doesn't waive tuition but the TA packages are pretty good, and it has a better rep than SJSU.

Me too. I wrote to Rice today so expecting a rejection. UH has a mysterious silence all over.

Guys, today I have received an email that I have been accepted to USC, what about scholarship or fellowship?

Will I receive it in a separate email if I`m awarded? Should I contact my department regarding scholarship? Because, I once did and I do not want appear annoying.

Do students usually receive email on funding later after decision letter?

I think each school is different to be honest. If you didn't receive any information regarding possible funding/scholarship I would say you are most likely admitted without financial support at this point...though I could be wrong.
