Did anyone else apply to UConn? I got in but was wondering what other people's impressions were of their program

Congrats!

hey everyone, mostly a lurker here but getting too stressed not to jump in. I come from a fine art background so my PhD quest has been rather loopy and non-linear... I only applied to two programs (largely cuz I'm looking to move back to NYC to be with family!) and one is NYU's Media, Culture & Communication - I see it so rarely in people's sigs, anyone else going out for that one? Anyone know if they interview? Results survey suggests I should hold my horses til mid-Feb, but, what can I say.......

I'm applying to NYU Steinhardt's MCC program (currently attending NYU Tisch for Perf Studies). My sig needs to be updated as that and USC are the only ones I've applied to. Which, side note, I haven't heard from yet in case people were curious. I have no idea if they interview. I didn't interview for Tisch, but I don't know that that's universal... and I'd also not worry about the responses yet cause our term just started today. So I don't even think any of the Ad Comms in any departments have even really had a chance to meet.

Ugh ok I can't take the constant email checking. Time for a distraction!

What is your favorite in-field book?

What is your favorite pleasure reading book?

What's your current favorite TV show (if you watch TV)?

Woo!

Well my in-field bibliography needs work, but my bible right now is Henry Jenkins Textual Poachers, specifically the anniversary edition.

Favorite pleasure reading book of all time is probably Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lionness Quartet. It's a YA Fantasy novel about a young woman who runs away to learn to be a knight.

Favorite TV Show? Hm... I can't really pick a favorite, but currently I'm fascinated by Master Chef Junior.

I'm about to go crazy waiting to hear back, so I welcome this distraction!

I don't really read many in-field books, sadly, but I recently read Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg just to get some additional perspective for a study I'm doing so I'm going to count that :)

My favorite pleasure read, at the moment, is the All-Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness

annnnd, I don't really watch TV, but I've been binging on Friends during my free time lately!

A book that eventually led to me discovering Comm is The Art of Translating Poetry.

I love the Book Thief.

And Wheel of Fortune.

Oh bless you, I could really use a distraction!

I can't think of any "favorite" in-field books at the moment but for pleasure reading, I recently read The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender and thought that was absolutely beautiful.

I also probably watch a bit too much TV (oops? :D) my current favorite is Parenthood which is ending this Thursday.

Hey hey, I've been looking at the results search of UCSD for communication, to try figure out more or less when they'll be giving an answer... and... it's very strange, the last updates are from 2013, then 2012... there's nothing from 2014! Anyone has an idea of what could be the reason? anyone applying to UCSD?

It seems that Temple is starting to send out notifications. I just got my letter of acceptance yesterday via mail. I had a "semi" interview in November when I contacted a professor with whom I am interested in working. So, on that note my admission might be early. Good luck to everyone!

My favorite in-field book right now is probably The Content Analysis Guidebook by Neurendorf, probably because there is a solid chapter on intercoder reliability.

My favorite pleasure reading book is usually anything in the Harry Potter series :D

And... currently airing, is probably Parks & Rec. My favorite of all time is West Wing

Haven't heard anything from schools, but I was accepted to a pretty cool conference overseas - which means, I need to get back in the groove of writing and I need to figure out how to search for travel grants! Has anyone had any luck with financial aid for international conferences (or monies from national, state, or private endowments)?

Congrats! That's great news.

I haven't but congrats!!

My favorite in-field book at the moment is Show Sold Separately but I recently started a few that are amazing. It changes pretty frequently.

Hmm, pleasure reading... I'm working through the Song of Ice and Fire series and (a guilty pleasure) the Shopaholic series.

I study TV and I love TV so I watch quite a bit. Recently, I was really enjoying The 100 and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but I'm not loving the second season of either.

I don't know which conference and field this is but afaik, the ICA travel grants really don't go to American students but rather to people in countries in which the average yearly income might not be enough to buy a plane ticket. Are you still at an institution? If yes, this will obviously be your first point of contact. When it comes to other options of funding, I'm not really well informed since I'm lucky and my school has a lot of travel funds :/

Unfortunately, I just finished my Masters a few months back, so no go @ institutional funding. I guess I'll have to inquire with the organizing committee as to options geared towards the impoverished international. Not every American is rolling in the dough !

Funding is really important for me. Hoping to get at least a partial scholarhips/assistantship/etc somewhere!

I have a phone call scheduled with the school I was accepted to - they want to know if I have any questions.

While I have an idea of a couple things I'd like to know (some I need to know), I might not think of everything!

So, what questions would you all ask? (Considering you already know quite a lot about the program itself, in general, and about funding, in general - what are the nitty gritty specifics you'd ask now?)

Oh, I'm really excited to hear everyone's answers to this.

I would ask...

1) How are advisors chosen? (if applicable, many of the schools I applied to, the DGS assigns the first advisor and then you have the opportunity to ask someone else for the dissertation phase)

2) Which courses do the TAs typically teach?

3) How much input, if any, do they have in regards to the courses they are assigned?

4) Does the department offer any funding for travel/conferences?

5) What kind of summer support, if any, does the program offer?

Obviously these will change if these questions are addressed online but the amount of information available on programs varies vastly in my experience.

Ah! Perfect! This is just the type of stuff I'm looking for... Thanks Autumn!

I have about 15 financial questions but I think that's more appropriate after you've already accepted the offer lol

It's interesting that you compare your situation and options to the 'impoverished international'. Maybe you should reconsider how you phrase these statements before actually contacting the organizing committee. ;)

I think the "impoverished international" was self-identification by the poster and not a label directed toward others.

I think Duna was implying that labeling oneself as impoverished, when one has two degrees and is seeking funding to attend an academic conference, is a bit insensitive to actually impoverished people.

This. Although I understand that you did not label yourself impoverished, even trying to compare yourself and your situation to some of the internationals possibly applying for funding is quite ignorant.

This.

Thanks for doing that so I didn't have to. As you said, some fees are all the more prohibitively expensive for applicants from certain countries, in proportion to their annual income in dollars. I'm really glad not to be faced by that particular challenge.

I was simply being a bit cheeky - no need to call me ignorant (or resort to name-calling at all). I would never email such a thing to a professional.

Let us not forget, however, that many of us have taken on rather substantial loans and as such, cannot necessarily afford to attend conferences that they may potentially benefit from. As a (recent) independent scholar, there is usually not much available in terms of aid. Regardless, my comment may have been insensitive, to which I apologize for. I fully acknowledge the plight of internationals, and wholly support any and all systems in place that may aid them.
