coyabean Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) I know Duke (Anthro department) sent me an e-mail prior to Christmas, saying that the Graduate School offices never forwarded my writing sample to them. The e-mail i got in response to my e-mailing it in was that they wanted to get everything together so the faculty could review the application immediately after the holidays. I suppose by looking at the results from last year, it seems that Duke has a history of letting people know that they're finalists by the end of January (re: January 26th). I got that same email although I know I'd attached it to my app, sent the email AND a paper copy. :/ I'm local and I work at the Uni part time and I've heard nothing of movement. A recent email from a prof there "wished me luck" but nothing about them being discussion mode yet. ETA: cultural anthro Edited January 25, 2010 by coyabean

ETA: cultural anthro my new favorite in duke news is somehow duke (graduate school, not department) sent me an email to an email adress I give to shopping and porn websites. I double checked to make sure that I didn't provide the address by accident or that my computer didn't autofill it. Nope. It just so happens my @gmail username happens to be registered at hotmail. So BY CHANCE I checked my email to see when my amazon order was coming. And there was an email from duke sending me an update on the materials they have received. Does anyone else find that strange?
boxboss Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Just got an email from University of Washington. They've admitted me to the Biocultural Anthropology PhD. No news on funding, though they sent me some links for ways to obtain outside funding (NSF stuff), which can't bode well... Nevertheless, it just feels good to get an acceptance!
Paleoanth Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 To those applying to evo anthro at Duke, who is your POI? I did not apply this year but likely will next year and I'm really interested in working with Hare. Would like to hear what you all think/know of him/the dept Well, he appears to be everywhere these days... http://video.pbs.org/video/1383599160/ http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1921614-1,00.html
punkybugsy Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I have three POI in the department who I would be equally happy working with. Hare is one of them. He was very nice in emails. Other than that I can't say much as I have yet to visit. He seems to be a very popular choice as far as POIs are concerned so expect stiff competition. punkybugsy Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 anychance you could tell me if you have been emailing with him at his duke address or gmail? About a year ago I emailed him at his duke address, which was listed on the website, and he answered (and was very nice and helpful). A few months ago I wanted to email him again about visiting the lab but the website had changed since the last time I visited it and there was a seemingly generic canine cog lab email address given on his profile instead of the duke.edu one. I decided to email him at the duke address I still had saved from when he emailed me last year, but I never heard back. I want to email him soon but I want to make sure it's to the right one..he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to ignore emails from prospective students, especially since he had answered me before, so I don't know what was up with that. Anyway I'm going to be taking this next year off while living in Durham and would really love to volunteer in his lab. I'm not positive that I'll end up applying there because honestly Duke is a longshot for me, and I also have no anthro experience (my BA and MA are in psych), but I really want to be productive in my year off, get some more experience, establish more contacts, and hey I'll already be in Durham. What are the chances of being able to volunteer in his lab (anyone, not just you) ? I know the psych department at my university loves to take in volunteers, who are usually prospective applicants, but I'm not sure this is universal. I emailed him at the canine cog lab and got a quick response. He's doing field work in the Congo until March now, so I don't know if he's responding often. It seems as though all his emails are connected because when I emailed the cog lab and auto response came from a gmail or duke account. Otherwise, I don't know about volunteering. If I have the chance to talk with him this spring should the interview gods see fit, I'll ask for ya.
Homo studentsis Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) I'm dying here waiting to hear from some schools. Most of my applications haven't even been in for a month, but dammit I expect immediate (and positive) results! Edited January 28, 2010 by Homo studentsis

Most of my applications haven't even been in for a month, but dammit I expect immediate (and positive) results! Waiting is the worst part of the whole process. Try reading through phdcomics.com from the beginning- it will give you something to do and prepare you for the years ahead.

hogmommy Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I just found this site and have quickly become addicted. I've taken a non-traditional path and have been a stay-at-home mom for 7 years. I've applied to the bio anth MA/PhD combined program at the University of Arkansas. Because of "little" things (my husband's career, paying the mortgage, etc.) this was really my only option and, perhaps unfortunately, is also the source of my undergrad degree. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for acceptance because I have had only good conversations with my potential advisers and the grad school coordinator. Coming back to academia after so long, I thought my biggest challenge was going to be finding profs to write LORs and taking the GRE. I had no problem with either thanks to strong relationships maintained over the years and months of GRE prep (my score: 680V, 740Q!!!) I know that Arkansas is not a prestigious program like many of you are applying for, but having only one app out there is nerve-wracking. According to last year's results, it looks like I might know either way in the coming week or so! This site is great for both information and support and I'm so glad to have found it! coyabean Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Just thought I'd mention that our area is snowed in. Duke is on a limited schedule today and probably a late start tomorrow. Expect delays.
applyingwaitingstressing Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 ugh! maybe they'll all conference call each other? Just thought I'd mention that our area is snowed in. Duke is on a limited schedule today and probably a late start tomorrow. Expect delays.
shaydlip Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 ugh! maybe they'll all conference call each other? Not likely. To us, it's huge, to them, it's just another day.
ANP Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Hey guys, No one has posted about Duke's evo anth program in a while. Does anybody have any new news? Where are they in the process? I hope all is well!

I hope all is well! I have heard nothing. Looks like in the past they haven't made decisions until around March 7. So I'll wait a week before wringing my hands.

Ugh the waiting! Finding this site and realizing how slim the odds are actually makes me feel a bit better because I don't have that stupid hope anymore.
Sarah S. Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Duke Evo Anthro applicant here. Just got my email to check website about three minutes ago. Rejected. I sort of figured, since so many people seem to want to work with Dr. Hare. I just thought I might have a shot because we have similar interests, and I majored in anthropology and psychology and so on. Oh well. Also rejected from Boulder, in the mail, about five minutes ago.

foxes Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Hey, Ive applied for cultural anthro at Duke, do you know what stage the process is at? I havent heard a peep out of them. Others seem to be getting calls for interview, maybe i should just give up now I am only talking about cultural anth., I don't know if other branches have different schedule. So, admitted (few people) were notified last week. Waitlisted people (whom I presume have all been interviewed) are being notified these days. Only 21 people out of 149 were interviewed, and I was told in my interview that the cohort of admitted students would be 6 or 7. Don't take this informations as definitive- better email/call them. Hope this helps!
applyingwaitingstressing Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 umm if you were not contacted by email for an interview at the beginning of Feb. i'm 99% sure you were not accepted to the cultural anthro dept. sorry bud. they had 149 apps and i believe have admitted initially 5 students? you can call or email holly francis to confirm, she's really nice!
