chethedoctor Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Haha. Thanks! I applied for the UK last year and remember how shocked I was just to make it to the next round. It is ridiculously competitive, so congratulations! The main reason I'd want to go to the uni I would apply to is the people working there, their research resources, and that fact that studying the British Empire in England would allow for many resources I do not currently have that would prove very useful for my dissertation. I think you are onto something here. The trickiest thing about the Fulbright is making the case for a particular university or a particular country. It seems you have the reasons for the country pretty much locked up. Couple that with an articulation for the program at the university you have in mind and you could be looking at a strong project. I agree with miracle18. I think you should go for it. You already have experience writing Fulbright essays and you know what to expect from the interviewers.
Horb Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Thanks guys! I had talked to my FPA from my old uni when I initially applied and she had mentioned that they just don't get as many MA applicants as they do BA, which judging from GradCafe, is definitely true. If anyone wants helps editing essays or generating ideas, let me know.
artsy16 Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Hey everyone! I'm planning to apply to do an LLM in the UK!
Bluefit Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Hey everyone! I'm planning to apply to do an LLM in the UK! Via the Fulbright program or just applying.
anemoneceremony Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Hi all! I'm interested in doing a creative writing Fulbright. Does anyone here have experience with applying for one?
tspier2 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Hi, all! I applied for a Fulbright last year and was an Alternate. Upon reapplying this year, I was selected as a Fulbright ETA recipient. I just started a blog to keep track of the adventure, and my first post outlined my personal experience with the application process. In case you're interested in reading it, you can find it here. nsnotable and Photogeographic 2
kyjin Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I'll be applying for a Research Grant for Japan this year. I actually applied for a grant five years ago right after undergrad, but was an alternate. Worked out for the best; I ended up going to Japan anyway under a different language program, and in subsequent years got my MA and now in my PhD. Also applying to other grant programs to do research in Japan next year, so hopefully one of them will work out. Good luck to everyone! Photogeographic 1

kyjin Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Are you applying under Scholar or for the ETA? Study/Research. Japan doesn't have an ETA program. (And I'm planning to use it for dissertation research anyway.) Photogeographic 1
SoundandVision Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Hey everyone, another current alternate. I'm going to reapply this year for a research grant to Argentina and am debating how much to change my application. I've set up a meeting with people at my university who screened me this last year to get feedback. I don't know if that's a useful plan for anyone else. I'll let y'all know how it goes!

I am considering actually adjusting my proposal from Kenya to Tanzania... but not sure yet.

You may want to consider reaching out to your former FPA...even if you are not going through the university this time. You may be able to see if they have files from interviewing/screening you in the past. Just a thought! Photogeographic 1
shinigamiasuka Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I'm not sure if you guys are all US students applying for Fulbright, but it seems they aren't giving fellowships to us international engineering peeps this time around: http://photos.state.gov/libraries/bangladesh/5/ece/Fulbright_Foreign_Student_Program_2016.pdf

Interesting statement from Fulbright when I had spoke to them. If you were selected as an Alternate, then for the most part it wasn't your project. I would have it re read a few times tweek a few sentences and such and re submit. We'll see, I have been selected as an alternate twice in a row.. so maybe my way isn't the best..lol. I applied under scholar award and am fighting for one grant, maybe two max.. so it's a bit more difficult.

In fact, I found that my project was a lot more clearly articulated this time around; consequently, it could very well be the project or the way it was worded, among a variety of other possibilities.

Hi Kylin, I was just wondering if you did any research on the clause in the Fulbright eligibility requirements that says they prefer applicants who have not spent "extended time" in their host country. I want to apply for a research grant to Germany or Austria, but will be spending this year in Germany. I was awarded an ETA to Germany this year but turned it down for another fellowship. At the time of application I will only have 2 months there, but obviously the program is a year long, so I am not sure if they factor that in or just look at how much experience a person has in the country at the time the application is due. It sounds like you have spent significant time in Japan already too, but are still applying there. Do you know anything about the "extended time" clause?

It sounds like you have spent significant time in Japan already too, but are still applying there. Do you know anything about the "extended time" clause? It actually works a little differently for graduate students as opposed to graduating seniors from what I've seen (at least for Japan). I actually have several friends who have received Fulbrights to Japan who have spent considerable time there; one who was on JET for three or four years and has done several extended research trips in the past, another who has had several research trips and was in Japan on a year-long language program at time of application. In my case, I have 11 months total experience in the country between 7 months of language school (should have been 10 but I was there for 3/11 so it was cut short) and two 2-month research trips, which in the grand scheme of things isn't much at all. If I were currently doing research in Japan, I'd be ineligible, and this one discourages first-timers to Japan. (Country page lists in the description for the graduate student grant that non-specialists for Japanese studies and first-timers for Japan have to prove the feasibility of their project since they won't have the language or resources of specialists or those who have spent time in the country.) That said, I do think it was to my advantage when I applied as a graduating senior that I had no prior experience in the country. (I was an alternate when I applied in 2010-2011.) But for graduate students applying (at least for Japan), I think it's fairly rare to have someone who has not spent some time in the country. Edited May 3, 2015 by kyjin

Bluefit Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 (edited) Bluefit - through the Fulbright (that's why I commented in this thread ) i'm sorry for being to vague. Fulbright has the Student Fulbright (ETA) or the Fulbright Scholar program where professionals or those who have been working for at least 5 years apply. I was ascertaining which one Edited May 4, 2015 by Bluefit

Bluefit Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Bluefit - through the Fulbright (that's why I commented in this thread ) Through the ETA or Scholar program..
Horb Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 There's also the study/research, which falls under the student program along with ETAs.
rockrmoose Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Hi All, Current alternate here. I'm thinking of reapplying for the Taiwan ETA, and I heard that its good to note that you were selected as an alternate previously. I'm just wondering, where would be a good place to put it? In the Personal Statement or Statement of Grant Purpose?
