Well I meant emailing the graduate secretaries. I guess they get these questions all the time so I wouldn't be annoying anyone. What should I say? Hi my name is XXXXX and I am wanting to know if University of GradCafe has sent out all of their invites??

I simply call them and ask if there have been any updates on the social/experimental applications. I don't want to be known as the annoying applicant so I prefer the phone to keep it a little more anonymous.

That was actually the main reason I called. I wanted to know if they had set a date for an interview weekend. They do not have an interview weekend. You can just expect a call from your POI.

*nervous at the idea of being called by POI* Note to self: refresh self on POI's work. Dorky admission: I make powerpoints of articles for myself to prepare to speak to professors/study. I'm glad there's only 3 school I really think are still contenders- it's exhausting.

That actually doesn't sound like that bad of an idea.

I'd much rather just get rejected. At least I can move on and not depend on other people. Even if I do get in eventually, I'm still not their top choice. And more often than not, I'm not getting in once waitlisted.

I just really hope this next interview weekend goes well and I hear positively from it. I'll probably accept the offer if they make one

At least yall are keeping good spirits.. There is some guy that got rejected from the Duke Political Science program that is a pretty belligerent.

That comment was hilarious! I saw the post and was absolutely shocked! It was very scathing and unprofessional. Maybe that's why the individual didn't get in...

Wow, yeah, that guy is ridiculous. I mean, if you're going to be in academia, you're going to have to realize that rejection is part of the process--you just have to keep going. Besides, how ridiculous is it that he didn't get in anywhere else either and yet he's only going off on Duke because that was his last hope? That man could stand to take a psych class or two.

I just found out that someone in my lab who blatantly steals ideas and ever since being promoted has been pretty mean to the RAs got into Stanford's sociology program. I know that psych is way more competitive than soc, but it still kills me, considering that i still don't have an acceptance yet. Any supportive words would be greatly appreciated.

I remember when I first started designing studies and my adviser would be sure to close the door so nobody could hear any ideas that we had. It was astonishing to me at the audacity of some people.

Wow that's depressing. :( You know, if that person had to cheat their way into a PhD program by stealing other people's ideas, chances are that'll bite them eventually I think. If that person is going to succeed in research, they will need to be able to think for themselves and come up with their own ideas. It'll be hard for this person to get by just on stealing ideas...at least I hope that's the case. I bet eventually this person will either get discredited, lose allies (and the all-important networking connections that come with them) because of their behavior and the way they treat others, or simply not advance due to a lack of good ideas of their own.

And btw, even if you don't have an acceptance yet, and even if you don't get one this year, the fact that you're an honest person means that when you do get into a PhD program (and I'm sure you will, even if it ends up being next round!) then you'll know that you worked hard and deserved it (and you'll be able to sleep at night knowing your achievements are honestly won!). Plus since your efforts are your own and you care about treating other people well and fairly, people will recognize that in you and want to work with you, which will help you succeed in the long run and probably even make you feel especially good about your successes. That's my prediction anyway, fwiw. :)

My adviser told me about one girl when he was in grad school at Kansas that would just take other peoples ideas and tweak them. One girl was really interested in African American studies and she did some really grandiose study. Well this girl did the exact same study, but with Asian women.

You know what's crazy? A few of the Yale results said that they had over 10,000 applicants for the year. I did not apply there, but I looked it up and with their $95 application fee they made almost $1 million on application fees alone. And that is just the psychology department!

Can someone post the link to the website with the decision? I haven't heard anything from Yale but am thinking I just haven't been emailed yet..

Log into the application website and scroll down to the bottom. There should be a link there about your admission decision.

I was just thinking about that the other day. I wonder if they really do see this as a bit of a fundraiser, because i can't believe that it takes up too much of their time. That's pretty sad too because it means that there is a definite selection effect for those who can vs. those who can't afford to pay all of the application fees.

I'm pretty sure there were 10,000 applicants to the GSAS, not just the psychology department. I think the psych applicants number in the hundreds, maybe 1,000, but I sincerely doubt 10,000 people applied to the department. If so, applying anywhere is practically pointless (assuming other programs have applicant pools anywhere near that high) when you consider most cohorts are 20 or less.

I completely agree! I mean yes psych programs (& Yale) are competitive, but 10,000 applicants to one department in one year is just inconceivable.
