Congrats on your acceptance Jordy!

I'm very curious about the Waterloo acceptance myself!( It wasn't me)

I hope not. I haven't heard anything from them either.

I don't suppose you have heard anything from Tennessee have you?

Nope. I see you've heard from Texas and I still haven't heard from them either.

Well that more of my doing. I had already knew that my POI had sent out at least 1 interview invitation so I emailed my POI to ask if he had sent out all the invitations. He said that he would not be able to invite me. I haven't received a formal rejection yet, but I am sure it will be on it's way eventually.

I've been waitlisted at University of Kansas. They said they wanted a class of 3-4. They sent out 10 offers of admission and then created an alternate list.

Letter dated 2/12/10

So they want 3 or 4, but accepted 10? I guess they are assuming that at least 6 people are not going to accept they offer. I'd be surprised that anybody would turn down a spot at Kansas.

Yep. The letter says "At present, we have offered admission to ten applicants, anticipating that some will turn us down in favor of other schools or changed life plans". I was really impressed at how detailed and personal it was. It is good to know the figures of what they admission than just being told a "yes", "no", or "wait listed".

I know I keep posting this but has anyone heard from/know anything about Penn State, Indiana, or Iowa State? I'm not allowing myself to contact the programs until the second week of March so I'm relying on you all instead. :-)

While that makes sense under normal circumstances, I can't help but wonder if it's an extra risky move in this economy. With the number of applicants increasing exponentially and the shrinking size of incoming cohorts, isn't there a much greater chance that each applicant will get fewer offers than they normally might? I can't tell you how many people I know who only got into one place last year and took it. (I know that last bit is anecdotal, but it's still several real-life cases.) I'm sure they know what they're doing better than I do, but I still question it. It would suck to have a school imply, "Yeah, um, I guess we can take you but we can't fund you. We didn't think you'd actually take us up on that offer..." I don't see why they can't just put the other few at the top of the wait list.

I agree, I'm suprised they didn't make offers to 6 or 7 (or less) instead, 10 just seems to be too high of a number in my opinion.

Also, I see that people have been accepted, wait listed, and rejected from Kansas. Meanwhile, I haven't heard a peep from them. I'm inclined to think I am/was really low on the wait list and maybe they were deciding whether to keep me on or reject me, but I'm still curious.....

EDIT: Literally 10 minutes after posting this, my mail came, and I got the same wait list letter. Weird timing! haha

Of course it is risky, but schools typically have some evidence-based estimates of their yield.

I wouldn't be surprised if yield among initially waitlisted applicants is substantially lower, because those people have often made other plans by the time the spots open up. So it's not as if admitting fewer and then planning to rely on the waitlist is risk-free, either.

Programs need PhD students to keep research going, teach classes, and generally keep faculty happy, so having too few students is bad, too. Not trying to defend this program's decision, just saying I can understand where they're coming from.

One of the grad students here at OSU told me that he has been on Kansas' wait list twice and not to hold my breath because they do give out so many offers and so few deny them. Oh well.

Yeah I am sure they know what they are doing. I am more amazed that they can realistically expect 6 people to turn down a spot at Kansas.

@jordy: Were you applying to work with Omri Gillath?

Posted

Yes indeed.

Then you are probably much luckier going to Purdue. My adviser went to Kansas and was not a big fan of Gillath. He was known for making all his GAs cry. And he apparently isn't very understanding of students having a life outside of the lab.

Yikes! Thank you for sharing that, these are the kinds of things people need to know. I wouldn't have gone back on my commitment to Purdue anyway and I already withdrew from Kansas, but it's definitely good to know that I avoided a possible disaster- plus I think we have a couple other Kansas applicants on this thread who will likely find this helpful. A solid word of warning indeed.

Yeah this is the sort of thing they don't put on their recruitment page or say during the interview... lol
