First traveled to Florida for a half marathon. Then went to New Hampshire for my graduation. Drove from there to Boston to fly out to Paris. From Paris we went to Chicago to visit some family and just got back yesterday. And now I'm sick and pretty sure I have vertigo. Yay!! Awesome thing is that on the day we arrived in Paris, I received an email stating I received a teaching assistantship that is giving me a stipend an in state tuition waiver for up to 10 hours for the fall semester. Since I am coming from out of state, I assume this means I will have to make up the difference. Not completely sure as the letter didn't make it very clear, so I'm waiting to hear back after asking. At the end of the fall semester, everything will be evaluated again. I had actually forgotten I had applied for the assistantship, so it was pretty cool to see the email. That's awesome re assistantship. Wow your travelling sounds exhausting and amazing - how'd the half marathon go? You're crazy to do that in florida where the humidity would have killed me!!! @pterosaur not the smartest move logically, but the heart isn't logical so go for it @Effloresce I totally know what you mean. It hasn't really sunk in yet that I'm moving and it's real and my mother won't be able to ring me 5 times a day (that's definitely a positive). I'm suddenly pretty nostalgic for all the "traditional" English foods so I'm trying to eat lots of my favourites before I leave. @knp those socks are amazing!
knp Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @hippyscientist Thanks! I got mine from the web shop at getbullish.com—I was internet browsing at 3 in the morning—but it seems like the brand is available on a bunch of websites, including Amazon, if you google "screwing up is part of the program socks". I'm saving wearing them until my classes actually start, but I'm looking forward to them! Cat_Robutt 1
marycaryne Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @hippyscientist The half marathon was great! It was a Star Wars themed one at Disney World and being the huge SW fan that I am, I had to go. I plan on doing it again next year. The weather was pretty cooperative and I really couldn't have asked for better conditions considering it was in Florida. A few of my last training runs in Oklahoma had higher humidity at about 80%...that was brutal. Between temps in the 60s when we started (5am) and humidity at about 50% if I recall correctly, it really wasn't bad. The only bad part was that there was some bad bottlenecking at a couple of spots and some walkers who did not honor the etiquette of moving to the right...forcing many of us to weave around them.

Oh wow. I am not a runner but I reckon I could be convinced to do a Star Wars run! That sounds so cool. I didn't realise they started so early!! It's incredibly sad that 60 at 5am is warmer than mid-day (~52F today) here at the minute. People are still walking around in winter coats and hats and gloves. If someone could find me some warmth and sun I'd be very happy.
sjoh197 Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @hippyscientist It has been so nice here the last couple of days temperature wise. It has been in the low 80's. Nevermind that it has been thunderstorming and "flash-flooding" for 3 days straight. It's not 95 out, and I'm happy. Last year the summer here got up to 106 with a heat index of 114, so I'm enjoying my springtime while it lasts.
janetjanejune Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @pterosaur The heart wants what the heart wants. Day Two of my summer internship and I'm already drained. My payroll and work email has yet to be processed, my co-worker is *extremely* extroverted, I still don't fully understand my position. Aaand my first paycheck isn't until July 25th. Help.
hippyscientist Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 @sjoh197 I am so envious. So so envious. I love the heat and humidity. When I lived in Greece, it was 115 regularly and it was perfect. I loved it. Maybe I should have accepted Florida's offer instead....All my winter stuff has been put away ready for the move because who would have thought that you'd need thick coats and huge wooly jumpers in freaking june??? So instead I'm left throwing mugs of tea down my throat to try and make me feel warm. It's not working. I've switched to wine.

Or even dry heat, would be good for me. I don't mind the heat so long as its not 80-90% mid-day humidity like it is here. Makes me feel like I'm suffocating.

I'm fed up of grey and such a narrow temperature range year round (30-70 without fail with the odd outlier). I agree with humidity. When you have a shower, step outside then realise you need another shower again. It's yuck. My housemate has been away for 2 days and it's amazing. If this is what life's going to be like come August I will be laughing. Cat_Robutt 1

janetjanejune Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 (edited) @Cat_Robutt Financially, I'll be okay. I'm on a strict budget plus I have friends in the area to rely on. Mentally and emotionally, I have my room to hide in. Also gotta mention this is a live-on position surrounded by 8th-10th graders. What doesn't kill ya, eh? Humidity is my worst enemy. I chose the PNW mainly for that reason. Had enough of it in being from Georgia. Edited June 3, 2016 by janetjanejune
Cat_Robutt Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @janetjanejune You must be a very patient human! It's good you've got friends nearby too
janetjanejune Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @Cat_Robutt Kids can be a handful. Once you set a rhythm and establish connections, it's a really rewarding experience.
Cat_Robutt Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @janetjanejune I like kids and also don't at the same time...I'm kinda like the mother in We Need to Talk About Kevin in some ways. I do think teens need to get more leeway than they do; I mean, they're discovering adults lie to them all the time, that the future may not be that bright, and dealing with all those hormones bouncing off each other to boot!
Cat_Robutt Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Hey everyone! So, I'm going to be the maid of honor for a wedding in a month, and was wondering if y'all had any favorite skin products/makeup/hair products you use when getting ready for social outings? For the past week I've been so focused on construction/cleaning/painting and staying sane that I haven't even taken care of my skin, and it's taken a toll: some small stress acne has appeared on my chin! argh! Normally I try and take care of all of my body, but the change of climate and mood have been a lil rough. Any advice would be appreciated!. Also she-who-shall-not-be-named called me an invasive species yesterday, so guess I'm like a feral cat in the Everglades y'all

You got this! Take out all the stress on the 5k. For skin care stuff, it's a little on the pricier side but I love, love, love Kiehls for pretty much anything. Makeup I use a mix of Bobbi Brown & Mac but these aren't exactly conducive to grad school budgets...but they are wonderful on my face! (Thankfully I wear makeup so rarely that I can afford to buy one thing of foundation per year) Also, essential oil steams are fab too. Drop a few dashes of some nice smelling stuff in some hot water and stick your face over it with a towel over your head...bliss. Even better if accompanied by some you time.
Cat_Robutt Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 @hippyscientist Kiehls! Neat! Thanks for the recommendation! I don't wear makeup much as I range from butch to femme depending, and am terrified of getting my makeup done for the wedding because of a horrifying "makeover" in high school that left me looking like a clownish reject for a camo-themed wedding. My sister-in-law is a chemist for a big chemicals company, so she gives me free samples for fancy makeup I could never afford––the next time she gives me some Bobbi Brown I'll pass it along to you!
Pink Fuzzy Bunny Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I don't know how you all have mastered the art of public transit. Tonight I sat in the back of the bus with my headphones in just chilling, when suddenly I was at the bus garage and the driver turned the lights off on the bus! He said he didn't see me. So I had to walk back to campus... my Fitbit said it was 5.5 miles. And THEN take another bus to my car. AND THEN drive home. Ah well, now I know
marycaryne Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 @Cat_Robutt I dressed up as a Stormtrooper using a crop top and leggings I got from Poprageous. Next year my plan is to go as Captain Phasma as I am rather obsessed with her. It is quite common for people to dress up during the Disney races according to the theme of the race. They have a Star Wars race at Disneyland already, but it is Light Side. This Disney World one was Dark Side, which was fun. Costuming is a way of life for me...whether normally or in a race. I'm a member of the 501st Legion, which is a Star Wars costuming club (Dark Side only) and I have Stormtrooper armor for it. Those pugs are ADORABLE!!! Cat_Robutt 1

But when you have summers that can go upwards of over 100 and does not cool off in the evenings and you have constant heat advisories telling people to not go outside, and everything is dead from the lack of rain, and there's not a lot of shade because it's a prairie state...even dry heat becomes unbearable. It makes me really happy to be moving back to Florida. I can handle the humidity, especially when a lovely afternoon shower helps to cool things off. We have found Florida summers to be much more tolerable than our Oklahoma ones.

Ah well, now I know I grew up in Chicago so public transportation is no problem for me. I used it almost every day. When my husband and I were in Paris last month, we had no issues using the Metro. But I have noticed public transportation can be confusing and takes awhile to learn for those who weren't exposed to it early on...especially with a system that may not have a regular schedule. In Chicago, the CTA is always running. Missed a bus or train? Catch the next one in a couple minutes or so. Here in OKC, if you miss one, another might not come for an hour or two.

My father repeatedly used to get on the train in London, fall asleep and wake up in Wales or Scotland. We started sending him to work with a sign attached to his jacket to wake him up at our stop. Lesson learnt @Cat_Robutt ugh I feel you with the make up thing. I've always wanted to be able to be a "red lipstick kinda girl" but we're lucky if my mascara stays on my face all day. Also that sister in law sounds mighty useful!!!

And yes, my sis-in-law is like a genuine sister; she's suuuuuper smart, sweet, funny, and attractive. I think if I hadn't married her sibling I would have married her! And I get to see her next weekend!!! She's coming to help us with some painting stuff and I'm so excited; it will help make the stay much easier for a few days.
