George J Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 Hi all, I was interested on getting you're opinion on whether males applicants have an advantage over females applications when it comes to getting accepted into school psychology programs? i understand that the field is largely dominated by women and wanted to know if being a male applicant might increase my chances of being accepted?

Yes. Being a minority of any kind in this field (and, yes, males are minorities in school psych) will help you. One initiative in the field right now is training more diverse school psychologists (like over 70% of students are white females or something ridiculous like that). George J and t_ruth 1 1

Why would it? It's not that white males are underrepresented because of some kind of systemic oppression in the field. And, you will likely find, that even in fields that appear "dominated" by women, the real dominance is still actually by white males, who are disproportionately represented in senior positions and those of power.

ECastanon Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Has anyone applied to Texas State University- Specialist degree? It's rolling admissions and they said decisions will take 3-6 weeks. I'm at 4 weeks 6 days and check the website daily for shits and giggles I just wanna knowwww
rosalie Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Has anyone heard back from Canadian schools yet? I applied to McGill (it's a long shot because I'm missing a couple courses they want but I have good GRE scores and references so I tried), and Mount Saint Vincent University. Both had January 15th deadlines so I'm hoping they're just later to extend invitations? Updates would be appreciated!!
LMG123 Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 (edited) ECastanon, I still haven't heard back from TXST. Fingers crossed! Edited February 8, 2017 by LMG123
Le Chat Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Hello all, this season I have mostly applied to Counseling Psychology doctoral programs but am also going to re-apply to the same schools for their Educational Psychology/School Psychology programs. I'm wondering how competitive School Psych is?
Necrovex Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 University of Florida placed me on its wait list, so here comes the wait period to see if I'll get accepted by April. Still waiting on USF and FSU. USF is still my top choice, and I had a good interview with them, so I'm quite hoping I get in!
cherry12055 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone happened to know the role of a school psychologist in different states--- I know already that people will say that it depends on district but after interviewing at a bunch of schools, I have discovered that the role is very limited in North Carolina and Michigan (based on what students have told me, the focus is mainly assessment throughout the state). I was wondering if anyone happened to know more about any other states, especially including Florida, Nebraska, or South Carolina. Thanks!!
jenna28 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Hi everyone! I have had one interview last week and two more scheduled. I applied to 3 other schools as well and they have been under review for about 2 weeks. I was wondering how long it has taken for schools to get back to other people? It is driving me crazy
LovePsychx3 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Yes to the post above ^^^!! I am anxiously waiting for two schools to respond. At the other two I interviewed at, I heard back within a week.

And, it varies depending on program and school re: competitiveness.
fritolay Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Hi everyone! Has anyone heard back from the Teachers College school psych phd? I only saw 1 interview post on the results page. Just wondering if i should give up hope

lockman86 Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 How likely it is that no PhD is offered, when I graduated from the MA program? Cos I'm freaking out.... I recently got accepted (notified by POI in e-mail) of the MA in School/Applied Child Psychology at McGill and was on cloud 9, but reading and reading about the prospectus gives chill down my spine! Would someone please share their experience? Thanks a million! PS Sorry for being an anxious freak...and school hasn't begun yet...
Necrovex Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 The agony of wait lists. Another establishment tossed me into wait list category. Quite demoralizing. My safety hasn't made its decision yet, but its funding may not be as reliable as the other two, which means I probably won't go. Looking at jobs in mental health for children to strengthen my work credentials and to attend classes to improve my weaknesses (no relevant foreign language background and minimal psych classes). Depressing I may not get into my desired schools but that's the cruelness of reality. I should know my fall by April 15th.
schlpsych Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Has anyone heard back form USF yet? I attended their first interview and i'm still waiting!
Marshmall0w Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Has anyone applied to/heard from Hofstra for School-Community PsyD? I haven't seen anything posted anywhere. And does anyone know if Pace is still extending interview invites for their PsyD program?

USF sends letters out. I only found out I was wait listed this past weekend due to my mother receiving my snail mail while I live overseas. So check your mailbox if you haven't already. schlpsych 1
