Sometimes, the scene is a meeting room with a handful of bored looking professors all looking at applications together and chit-chatting and invariably, one professor says "I don't know what kids these days are thinking, what is this? a diary entry? and you call this a GPA??" and there goes my application, into the wastepaper bin, waiting for the cleaning staff to take it to the recycling bin. Or my favorite: a giant tribal like fire where professors dance around tearing up applications and tossing them in and watching them burn as a pulsing drum beat plays. I'm so hijacking that image lol!!!! That should be what every anthropology applicant fears. More realistically, I imagine now, every time I open the online application, that a BIG RED REJECT will be flashing on the screen. Yay for active imaginations!! guitarHeroAn
On the same boat here! So glad to see that I'm not alone making up imaginary scenarios where I'll either see a Red Reject button, or I botch up an interview, or re-reading my SOP and concluding it wasn't good enough (or long enough, or short, even my mind can't decide it). Checking the university portals almost daily as well as keeping an eye on emails. I was so paranoid I made a completely new email address for giving to the university admissions committees just so that I don't miss a crucial email on my primary mail due to high volume of mails I receive daily haha. GreenEyedTrombonist
I've avoided going to the applications status checkers for my apps until today. Seeing "under review" is messing with my brain. x]

Yep, that sounds about right if you're describing me for the last 1.5 months.. Sometimes though, I'll re-read my SOP and think that I'm awesome (despite the dumb typo) but then start freaking out because I realize that if I don't get in this cycle, I have absolutely no clue as to how to make myself a better candidate next time around. I also have an "official" email address for work/school stuff. I made sure that my phone app was set so that I get notifications from BOTH addresses and my official account emails are auto-forwarded to my main email. YaY for email notification overkill! @GreenEyedTrombonist Dude, much respect for being able to hold out until now, that's AMAZING! DBear
@GunningForGrad LOL I'm literally dying with laughter - I just now noticed what your field of study is and I was like NO WONDER your images are so creative and elaborate! Kind of like occupational hazard lol lol Best of luck! Hahahaha oh it definitely is! I've spent the past several weeks staging every possibility in my head- if I'm accepted, if I'm rejected.... My most recent visual plan is to discover that I've been rejected and then go super spy on the universities. Crawling in vents, breaking into admissions offices while humming the mission impossible song to myself, leaving my application open (I'll bring extras of course to replace the ones they destroyed with fire) and stamping ACCEPTED in bright red letters across the top. Of course it's the modern age so I'll have to hack the computer system and change my status in there and send myself an acceptance email BECAUSE NO BACKSIES ON EXTENDONG AN OFFER, RIGHT???? My "big dream" that I hope actually happens is to get accepted and take my family out to dinner and buy them t-shirts to the university I go to as my way of announcing that I A-applied for grad school and B- actually got accepted. I'm really hoping it comes to fruition. I just hope they don't catch on until I know something for sure. I've convinced them that I'm traveling for work and to visit friends for my upcoming interviews! (Which are both technically true statements...) UGH - Now I have the mission impossible song stuck in my head!!! I like your t-shirt idea, it's really cute! Hopefully the t-shirts won't be too expensive (or maybe your family isn't so big). I'm petty, I'll admit. My acceptance scenario is of telling the handful of people that annoy me that I got into a BETTER school than them *evil villain laugh* I try not to think of rejection scenarios as it makes me SAD. If I get rejected, can you infiltrate the schools and change my status?? Because, of course, NO BACKSIES!!! Assotto
GunningForGrad
@DBear I will absolutely go in and change your status! Grad school for everyone!! I'm really nervous about my particular field because most program accept like...two (maybe three) applicants each yeah and that is a teensy tiny number of people to accept out of the giant pool of people who apply. My family is mostly my parents, sister and her fiancée. There are others but that'a the immediate. Not worried beyond that. Assotto
Feanor
Having contacted potential supervisors who were quite supportive, my inevitable mental image is each of them holding my files, sighing and thinking ``Silly me once thought he had some promise... I had a Skype interview/ chat with a POI last week - she was super supportive and we exchanged quite a few emails, a lot of them quite casual, leading up to November. After the Skype chat, I sent her an email saying 'thanks for your time' and for the first time in our correspondence, she didn't reply. She usually replied really quickly, but this time, it's been days and no reply. So that image, of her,, shaking her head, regretting having said "I hope you join us" way back in October - is in my head now. Sad.

So something that I remind myself of is that there are certain standards and restrictions on communicating with applicants. It could very well be that they aren't responding because they can't because they don't want to let you know that you're going to get an offer. Things get super formal around this time of year from what I can tell. And they have so much to do and work on that stop and go's in communication should be expected. Don't be disheartened! And those who offer you support will continue to do so no matter what. If they don't, then you never really had their support in the first place. Feanor
To reinforce my mental image: just got an unofficial rejection from one of the would-be supervisors, basically saying my file was great but my GRE sucks.
GreenEyedTrombonist
That sucks @Feanor Though, on the bright side, if you don't get in this year you at least know exactly what needs to be improved and it's something that is possibly fixable. eternalwait
I have my first interview tomorrow (via video). Ohhh mann, I'm so nervous, but at the same time happy! Marshall
Lord have mercy on this soul of mine. They weren't ghosting me. I couldn't login because they had a server failure and accounts were potentially compromised. All data on those potentially compromised accounts was wiped. I have to resubmit my entire application. So, no. No one is currently reading my application right now.

So so sorry that you'll have to wait even longer @Feanor sorry to hear that, but remember you only need 1 admit! My friend was telling me that when she applied last year, she got 11 rejections then the 11th one was a waitlist and the 13th one was a fully funded admission. Obviously, the unfortunate sequence was super stressful for her, but she got into a good program and is doing well. Hang in there.

So so sorry that you'll have to wait even longer Thank you- that's actually one of the first things I mentioned to my husband this AM when I woke up to the email letting me know.. The email implied that we had until MARCH FIRST to resubmit... So I was expecting a result the 2nd week of February and now that's out the window. This is my top choice school so I was comforting myself with the idea that I probably only had to wait 3 more weeks. I feel the worst about the fact that my recommenders have to resubmit their letters though.
DBear
@Marshall l...ette..rs ... TOO?!?! I just puked a little in my mouth. I had such a hard time with one of my letter writers (he was 2 weeks late for my top 2 schools) if I had to do that again, I'd have a nervous breakdown. I hope it will go smoothly for you. I mean the application itself isn't that big a deal and I thought it was only the delay that may be caused in getting an answer. But LORs..... So so so sorry! Hopefully they'll start reviewing as soon as an application is uploaded and not wait to start evaluations all at once. One of the schools I applied to had a Jan 15 deadline but I finished my application Dec 5ish. They sent me an admission offer on Jan 25 - so I figure they started reviewing materials even before the deadline. Good luck!
GeorgeC07
Ha I'm enjoying home for almost a week now. A close relative to my family went away a few days ago and we've been busy with the funeral, keeping me off these stuffs for some time. Now I'm wondering again whether I'm gonna hear back from the programs since it's been so long after the first response. Still, more wait ahead.
