    Okay, I need a bit of venting. This school has teased me for about 2 months implying I'd be offered a place. For instance, they asked me to fill two lengthy forms to compete for special scholarships, one of which is for "outstanding graduate students", both requiring the Department itself to nominate the candidates (you can't apply on your own). They do have their own funds, which they use for the standard funding package for graduate students, those scholarships would be extras. During this whole ordeal they proved to be a disorganized bureaucratic mess, and three weeks after the secretary said she'd "confirm I'd be offered a place" I finally emailed them again to find out I was rejected. They didn't even let me know by email, it seems they will send an actual letter (which will probably only reach me next month). Good grief, this actually sounds like a deliverance

    Update: McGill rejected me two days ago.

    The secretary of the department for one the programs told me she'd "confirm" with the coordinator that they intend to make me an offer and tell me shortly. That was 2 weeks ago.

    Someone in the results page contacted the POI at McGill to enquire and found out is in the wait list. The POI said they were impressed by the file, but funding for internationals is tricky and so they'd wait for the replies on the first round of offers and check again after April 15, suggesting that if you were not rejected by now then you should be on the same boat. Are you all internationals as well?

    Cambridge is pretty expensive overall, but it is a wonderful place to live. Girton is indeed a bit far, be prepared for jokes with that respect, but as a graduate student you don't really have to go there very often (you'll spend most of your time at your department) and students end up loving whichever college they get. As for any city, look for accommodation as soon as you can --- you can check with Girton and the university acc. office, but it might be worth living outside college in private accommodation. I strongly recommend you get yourself a bike and a rain coat.

    Meh, nobody will question your "credentials" because you are wearing regular clothing. It's always nice to try and look good, but don't overdo it --- when I was working on my master's there used to be a guy who wore a suit every single day (even when it was raining) and I can't say that made him "look professional".

    Being younger means nothing at all. When I did my master's I was 22 and the primary colleagues I used to hang out with were 19 and 28. We didn't have any drastically different experiences in the program --- trust whoever picked you that you have what it takes for the job.

    You're probably fine with just an office shirt, but whenever I had one I tried to look as neat as possible without being overly formal. That meant a white dress shirt with a tie and a nice plain sweater/cardigan and shaving. Can't say how much it mattered though, I'm sure they won't care as long as it looks like you do.

    I still haven't heard from 6 places, so I know how you feel. On the other hand, a new Zelda is out. I really owe you, Nintendo, you waited for the best possible moment.

    The BoGS bit goes fast, but funding is unpredictable. I'd decide which one I'd go to in the US in case I can't come to Cambridge and, once with a formal offer, thank the program, reinforce my interest, but mention I am still waiting for other results as well before I can make a fully informed decison and that I will let them know as soon as possible. Meanwhile, I'd thank my department at Cambridge and say I'm very excited about the offer, but that I wouldn't be able to attend without Cambridge funding and that I have this deadline to reply to US programs, inquiring furthermore whether there is a prediction as to when I should hear about funding. That is, of course, if you absolutely would rather go to Cambridge. Good luck!

    I can confirm that means the BoGS wishes to extend you an offer, that should happen over this week.

    I know it is nosy, but what kind of personal issue requires you to start a PhD in a top 20 university within the next two years?

    There certainly is an impact --- McGill maths, for example, extended application deadlines for people from countries affected by Trump bans, and so they might delay the decisions pertaining to international applicants until that new deadline has passed (ugh).

    Perhaps... This is supposed to be "the week", at least according to the past years data for my unis and subject. So yeah, I'm a little worried.

    You're essentially in. When it gets to that stage, it means the department has recommended you and the BoGS needs to verify all the bureucratic requisites are fulfilled (takes up to 2 weeks). Congratulations!

    I'm still feeling bad about my rejections because those came from places where the conversations with the prospective supervisors were flowing and very positive. I wouldn't care at all to be rejected from places that don't speak to mere peasants, but for these ones it feels like I disappointed the senpai that noticed me T_T

    Dalhousie, McGill is still sitting on my application (although they should say something anytime now). I guess a little bit of vomiting is worth it if we can survive the ride...

    Yesterday was a roller coaster of a day... Got nominated for a scholarship in Canada and rejected by Chicago (luckily in this order).

    To reinforce my mental image: just got an unofficial rejection from one of the would-be supervisors, basically saying my file was great but my GRE sucks.

    Having contacted potential supervisors who were quite supportive, my inevitable mental image is each of them holding my files, sighing and thinking ``Silly me once thought he had some promise... Won't happen again"
