I hope this isn't too cheesy for most of you, but I liked this topic from an application cycle a couple of years ago. What are your hopes, dreams, and guesses for graduate school admissions?

I will start!

HOPES: I hope I will be admitted to one program—any program!

DREAMS: I am not sure what my dream school is, to be honest. I chose many schools I would be jumping for joy to go to if I was admitted! But at this point, I would die (from happiness) if I was admitted to Redlands (where my family is), NAU, CU (where I live), or MGH.  My dream would be to have a choice of schools!

GUESSES: Because of my GPA, I am guessing I won't be admitted into a program this round, and will start a post-bacc program in the fall.

I love this! I think my friends and family are tired of listening to me obsess and worry about this process so it's nice to have all of you to vent with.

HOPES: As a career changer who graduated 8 years ago with a "mediocre GPA," I also hope I will be admitted into at least one program!

DREAMS: My dream is to get accepted at either CUNY Hunter or NY Medical for Fall 2017. They felt like the best fit for me out of all the open houses I attended and wouldn't totally break the bank.

GUESSES: I really have no idea what my chances are. I have a 4.0 in my post-bacc but my undergrad GPA is meh and NY is a competitive area so I'm afraid to hazard a guess and jinx myself

I think it's a fun way to pass the time! Having sent in my last app yesterday, it's waiting game from here on out.

HOPES: Be admitted to a program! I'd like to imagine that someone wants me

DREAMS: Not sure yet...still torn between if I want to stay local or go out of state. Maybe that decision will be made for me

GUESSES: I don't want to jinx myself! I know my GPA and experiences are good, but my GRE scores are not as strong. Plus, Cali is so competitive and CU gets a lot of applicants as well...

Hope: Any program. I just want to be a speech pathologist!

Guesses: Probably Central Oklahoma. I was accepted into the Senior Practicum Program, and rumor has it everyone who is selected for that gets into the graduate program. I would be ok with it since I love the staff, but I'm ready for a change.

This is great! Here's to everyones Hopes, Dreams, and Guesses!! :)

HOPES: Same as most- get into at least one school (I only applied to three) and have a great couple of years in whichever program I end up in!

DREAMS: UT-Dallas is my top choice, and being offered in-state tuition would be phenomenal. Even without in-state I would probably go there. My boyfriend moved to Dallas this past summer for a job at AT&T and loves it, and I really do miss him. The fact that UT-D has such a phenomenal program and great connection if I want to do research is more than I could have asked for. Oh, and get a dog.

GUESSES: I'm expecting at least an acceptance to UCF, especially since I'm applying for summer term and thats usually easier to be accepted (by a small margin). It's also my undergrad institution so that may either help or hurt me.

Good Luck to everyone! Can't wait to hear everyones dreams come true!

@k_kismet I'm in the same boat as you! My boyfriend recently moved for a full-time job to Denver, and really likes the lifestyle out there. CU Boulder is for him, but if I were to end up out there long-term, the school gives me an opportunity to make plenty of connections in the Denver area. We'll see what happens!

I love this thread!

HOPES: I'd be happy to be admitted into any program. After two years of working as an SLPA, I'm ready to take my career to the next level.

DREAMS: I'm crossing my fingers for the University of Houston. I have been working in the city plus my family and boyfriend live here. It would be great to have that support system and maybe live at home to save money. Also, it would be great if I could continue doing home health throughout the program on a part-time basis.

GUESSES: Honestly, I have no idea... I studied at UT Austin, graduated with a good GPA, and have work, volunteer, and research experience, but it's such a toss up. My GRE scores are mediocre (standardized tests are the worst).

HOPE: That the gamble to put all my eggs in one basket pays off and I'm not stuck next fall/winter applying to a bunch of other schools.

DREAM: I'm doing a hybrid online/in-person auditory-verbal therapy training program at UNC-Chapel Hill this semester and it's awesome. I wish that it were logistically feasible to do their grad program. Too expensive for OOS, too far from where we live & my hubby works, and with my special needs child's 5 day per week therapy schedule plus my other 2 kids, I'm not confident that I could handle going FT to an in-person master's.

GUESS: I have a lot of points in my favor but one very big negative of my age. If I were a decade younger, I think I'd have a halfway decent shot of getting into even a super-competitive program like Vanderbilt or UNC-CH. Not sure how schools will look at a 40 y.o. whose last paid job was in 2005.

This is so awesome.

HOPE: I just need one acceptance... I hope someone wants me as bad as I want this. Obviously, I hope to become an SLP out of this :]

DREAM: To have an option of graduate colleges. Although I only need one, it would be nice to have a couple acceptances to be able to choose from.

GUESS: This is my 3rd (technically) time applying. I applied two years ago with unrealistic expectations and applied to outrageous schools. Last year I put all my eggs into one basket and didn't get accepted. This year I made drastic changes to my applications and I am hoping it will pay off.

Great thread! :)

HOPE: I am hoping to be admitted to at least one school.  I have been checking the results several times a day for the past week and I am anxious to hear back from the programs where I applied!  I'd really like to go in somewhere in Ohio, so I can have in-state tuition.

DREAM: I want to go somewhere where I have the option to take additional coursework in aural rehab and/or early intervention.  My top school as of now is the University of Akron!  It'd be great to have a few choices, as others on here have been saying.

GUESS: I think I'll get in somewhere.  I certainly hope so- I applied to 10 schools.  I'm a fairly competitive applicant, although my quant is below average, and my stats are comparable to the averages of those accepted for most of the schools where I applied.

If I did it, you sure as heck can, lol!  I will be shocked if you don't start your program this Fall - unless you specifically choose to wait, that is. :)

I have a professional "crush" on Todd Houston's work and have heard excellent things about Akron's program. Not logistically feasible for me, but I wish you the very best :)

The program I'm targeting has a winter '18 start and I could definitely use the break between finishing my 2nd bachelor's this spring and starting grad school. It'll have taken me 6 semesters to finish my degree plus the certificate in Deafblindness Intervention. My house needs a thorough decluttering and deep cleaning that I simply haven't had the time or energy to do since I went back to school.

Are you getting AV certified before your masters?  I thought that was only available after the masters in SLP or Dr in Aud.  I'm very interested in AV Therapy too.

I applied to AG Bell last year to have the "clock" start on my candidacy last year based on my previous bachelor's in a related field (psychology) plus the number of CSD credits I had at the time. The request got turned down :( I should re-apply since I am graduating with my bachelor's this semester and it would be good to count the UNC-CH training program towards my required hours (it's already pre-approved by AGB).

I can't get my AVT certification until I receive my master's but it's a 3-5 year process to earn the certification and the clock can start upon receipt of the CSD bachelor's or if AGB grants me an exception, whichever comes first.

Request for Preliminary Review of Academic Background

If you do not have an academic degree (either bachelor’s or master’s level) in audiology, speech-language pathology or education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, you may request a review of your academic background.

To request a preliminary review of your academic background, submit the AG Bell Academy Service Request Form on p. 53 of this handbook and send it with a copy of your degree, transcripts and course descriptions from your coursework.

Upon receipt of your transcripts and course descriptions, the Academy’s Certification Committee will determine whether your academic background meets the eligibility requirements for LSLS certificatio, or whether further evaluation from a third party agency is warranted to make a determination.

The charge for a preliminary review of your academic background is $40.

@Crimson Wife Thank you for that information.  I will have to start thinking about this more in May then. :)

Let's see,

Hopes: I think most of us have the same hope, acceptance into an SLP masters program.  I definitely share this hope.

Dream: I really would like to move my family to Oregon or Washington for grad school.  Living is so expensive here in California.  I go back and forth between which school I'd prefer.  I'd like to work with children, and do some research on music as it affects auditory processing and language impairments.  I don't know if many schools are doing research on that (except Northwestern which is out of my range of acceptable debt as a mother of two children), so I didn't really base my applications on it.  It's still my dream.  I also want decent public schools for my girls to attend, and some job opportunity for my husband...

Guess:  I think my undergrad school might accept me, but who knows?  Maybe a school in WA?

Hopes: to be ok with whatever decisions are made by admissions.

Dreams: Get into a program where my husband can get a good job with plenty of hiking options around. Go on to provide genetic counseling to populations currently lacking access, possibly as a public employee. Ride a dinosaur.

Guesses: I'll gain 10 pounds from stress eating.

Edit: sorry, didn't notice this was in the SLP category. Good luck, everyone! I work indirectly with a lot of SLPSs and we desperately need you!

Hopes: I really hope to get into six out of seven schools just to have options. I applied to Vanderbilt but I think my GPA just won't cut it, so that's the seventh school.

Dreams: I'm going back and forth on the dreams. Right now I think getting in FSU with a substantial scholarship would be the best thing that could happen. However, they weren't very reassuring about adding my new grades from this past semester to my GPA calculation, which substantially raises it. Its possible that my GRE score saves me.

Guess: Nebraska seems to offer a good amount of financial aid to their students, so that might happen. I've never even been to the Midwest, so its slightly unnerving to think about moving out there all alone. On the other hand, the professor I wrote about research never wrote me back, yet they encourage their Masters students to find a mentor. So that makes me nervous. I feel like I will get into my undergrad institution (USF) and leaving kind of makes me sad anyway, so we'll see. I'm so nervous I sometimes feel like I won't get into any.

As a fellow mother of two, and a "move to OR or WA from CA" SLP grad student, I'd love to know which schools you applied to!  If UW or UO were among them, feel free to PM me for some info about the areas, etc.  Best of luck to everyone here - I was in your shoes this time last year and you will all be just fine, no matter what happens.  ?

Hi!! Just wanted to say that I live in the Midwest  (Iowa in particular, but I've been to many surrounding states), and if you have any questions about living over here, feel free to ask!

This thread is great! Here are mine:

Hopes: same as all, I want to get in somewhere above everything else. I applied to 10 schools, but I think at this point anything could happen.

Dreams: I'd really like to go to University of Oregon. I'd love to get a feel for a different area, so I think it'd be a great experience to move out of the Midwest. However, I'm unsure of how likely it is that I'll get in here, so I guess we will just have to play the waiting game!

Guess:I'm assuming I may end up at St. Ambrose University - they seem to like students from my university (which doesn't offer a comm disorders major). Or I may be applying next year, but I'd like to have more hope than that :)

Posted

Hopes: Like pretty much everyone else, I really hope I get in somewhere! Preferably the school I paid a ton of money to apply to (University at Buffalo.)

Dreams: This is hard. I think I would like all of the schools I applied to for different reasons. Nazareth college is beautiful but it's private...I'd rather pay state tuition. So maybe some kind of crazy financial aid deal where I pay next to nothing? Yeah that's my dream!!

Guesses: I think if I get into only one school it'll be my alma mater. I was pretty active in the department so I think that'll help my chances. But I don't wanna jinx myself... I really have no idea how competitive my application is.
