Fall 2018 Statistics Applicant Thread

Recommended Posts

I think CMU and Washington s the there acceptances and CMU started sending out the waitlist. It's possible they just didn't finish. The rest may come out on Monday or Tuesday. Maybe what's left is the borderline cases and rejections they didn't have time to process. I have no idea how hard it is to send rejections.  It could be accept these people, waitlist these people and reject the rest but if it has to be done individually it could take a while to reject a couple hundred people.

I am really surprised that there aren't a lot of Duke rejections yet.  I might email them this week to see if I am waitlisted or rejected.  Hopefully I’ll hear from Baylor soon.

I also wanted to share visit weekend dates:

UT Austin 2/22-24

Missouri - 3/4-6

V Tech - 3/21-23 OR 3/28-30

TAMU - Early March

Kansas State - nothing planned

Some questions I have been asked for other interviews are:

Why do you want a PhD (MS) in (bio)statistics?

What are your research interests?

Do you have any faculty members you are interested in working with?

What are your career goals?

Why UIUC(this program)?

Questions about my research experience (what exactly did I do,  do I want to continue it)

Questions about my academic preparation (classes I have taken,  how has it prepared me)

Oh, I really like the interview style of US Univ. When I was interviewed by Oxford and Cambridge for their Ph.D.programs, I was only asked to do an online exam with some very technical math questions, and they simply stared at me during the exam which makes me really nervous...

How long was the wait between submission and interview if you don't mind sharing? I applied for MS Statistical Science at Oxford by the January deadline and am sitting here refreshing my mailbox every 10 minutes...

Hi all,

I applied to a MS in Biostatistics. Just curios if anybody else here got a rather ambiguous email from Brown University, saying something along the lines of they've started reviewing their applications and are very impressed with mine. Mind you, the email was sent by the Program Director, saying that while the Committe is still working on their decisions process, he'd like to get to know me better and asks me how my graduate school search is going and if I have any questions about their program or life in Providence...

I'm a bit confused as to wheter this is an unofficial acceptance or what exactly it means. Is this a thing Brown does with a small group of applicants that intitially catches their eye or what? Also, not sure what my next step should be? Like, do I email him back with some generic questions, do I provide my phone number in the email signature so he can reach out if he wants to talk on the phone, how should I go about this? I'm afraid of coming off as either too straightforward or maybe not straightforward enough lol

Not a biostat applicant and I can't tell you if it is normal, but that seems like a good sign.  I checked results and it seems early for them for MS.  Email back send some questions, say you are interested (if you are) and see what happens.  I wouldn't call it an unofficial acceptance or an interview but it seems you likely made some version of a shortlist.  I don’t think they would contact you and say those things unless they actually liked your application and that you have a better chance of getting in at this point than the average applicant.  You could still get rejected but it is looking good for you right now.  I got a similar email from the Virginia Tech Statistics PhD program and it turned into an official acceptance two days later.  That may not happen for you but I would intercept it as it is more likely than not that you get in somewhere.

Thank you very much for your input :) Congrats for your admission too! Just curios, was your similar email followed by an actual phone or in person interview or anything like that, if you dont mind my asking?

I had a phone ”interview” but that was mentioned in my email.  It wasn't a real interview it was more like a recruitment call.  The only question they asked me (besides do you have any questions) was more about the details of my research.

@Bayesian1701 You've heard back from TAMU, so I thought I'd check this out with you.

I applied via mathprograms.org as suggested. After that, I never got an email confirming that my application was successfully submitted or a user/pass/link to check my status. I only get to see the following screen:

Is that all or am I missing something?

Mine is similar.  Did you get any emails from mathprograms@ams.org?  I got one for each rec letter and one saying my application was submitted,  and one for updates.  You don't get a portal or anything until after you get accepted and you formally apply to the program.  I got an email one day saying I was accepted and that was it.  They do rolling reviews so you aren't out yet.

I don't know the case of MS, I applied the DPhil before the deadline and had the interview on 15 Dec.

Yep! Got an email saying that "the application materials have been updated successfully". We should just hold up a bit more...

I got the same thing! Though a bit generic it definitely looks like a good sign.

Anyone heard anything back from Toronto, UBC, or McGill? I saw like two postings from Toronto. It's strange.

I've got an acceptance to the direct entry PhD at Toronto as well as an unofficial offer (from a supervisor) for McGill's MSc. Not sure if Toronto waits to do the MSc until after they've sent out the PhD letters?

Seeing a Harvard biostatistics waitlist. For my friend who has ants in his pants has anyone who had an interview heard from them?

edit: Ok I found out that a few people have been accepted and I see one waitlist.

I'm getting pretty nervous right now. Still very few news from the school I applied. I've seen at least one acceptance for almost all of my schools. Anyone else still in the same page?

For those wondering about Vanderbilt: They have sent out open house invitations but you can still be admitted even if you weren't invited to the open house (I don't know how likely it is but there's still hope)

Wasn't admitted to UGA's PhD but the graduate coordinator for the stats department sent me this ---

"I have recommended to the Graduate School that you be admitted to the MS program in Statistics. Once they have processed my recommendation, you will receive an official letter of admission from them. "

Does that mean its a for sure acceptance to the MS program? Cause I'll take it! haha!

Yep. I wonder if the whole recommendation to the graduate school is something along the lines of as long as the Graduate school doesn't find something crazy and undisclosed about you, you're in

Basically.  I think all they really do is check that GPAs, GREs, and TOEFL meet requirements and perhaps that documents aren’t forged.

I agree :). I guess at this point all we have to do is wait and see what happens. I did reply to the email with some generic questions mostly about financial aid opportunities for admitted students but haven't heard back yet.

I've been seeing a few Biostats MS from Michigan, which makes me anxious.

One of the faculty who was reviewing my profile previously called and said that they were positive with everything and wanted me to give them a Michigan reference who taught me last semester. I am wondering if I should email him back to check up on my status or if I should wait?

I know the decisions will probably come out in two weeks...just hate the waiting game.
