AspiringSLP35 Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I was accepted to a Comm Disorders master's program yesterday. I would like to accept their offer in case I am not accepted anywhere else. My only concern is that if I do accept and I am accepted to my #1 or any other school that I applied to would I be able to reject their offer. What are your suggestions? I have to decide by the end of the month. The deadline for admission material to be submitted for Spring 2018 for my #1 school is the end of the month also. A professor suggested I email my #1 choice and let them know I received another offer and I would really like to attend their school instead to see if I am accepted or not. Would that be pushy? What guarantee is there that if I am told I am accepted by my #1 choice but then when it is time for them to make their admission decisions I am not accepted. Any feedback would be helpful especially from those who have been in this position before.
2020slp Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 When is the deadline for schools to let you know if you have been accepted? I know for Fall applicants, April 15th is the day that schools are supposed to let you know one way or another. I don't know if I would email the school because they are probably already getting a lot of emails. I would hold off as long as you can so that you don't have to accept and then deny at the school.
Concordia Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 The professor's advice sounds as reasonable as anything.
Louly Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 You can accept and decline later. Also, It's completely ok to contact your number #1 school. It shows how serious you are about their program.
FrostyPotroast89 Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 You should definitely accept in case you don't get in elsewhere. If you do get into another school that you prefer you would just withdraw your acceptance and possibly lose your deposit if you have to give one.
CajunSLP18 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 I would wait on accepting until closer to deadline. There isn't a perk to accept right away. Also, our field is really small, and I wouldn't burn any bridges if I didn't have too.

I did not apply for Fall. I applied for Spring and Summer. Their deadlines to let me know vary but it will definitely be after Nov.1st. I emailed my #1 choice and the response I got was since their deadline for applications is not till Nov.1st they cannot give me an answer because all the application documents have not been reviewed. I accepted the offer I was given.

Only after that date will they review all application documents and then make a decision
ruby324 Posted October 28, 2017 Posted October 28, 2017 I was in the same boat a few days ago actually! One of my professors recommended that I email the school that had given me an offer and to ask for an extension to accept/decline. They were really nice and agreed. You've already accepted, but in the future if you or anyone else reading this ever runs across this situation again, I think asking for an extension is also a good idea.
Crimson Wife Posted October 28, 2017 Posted October 28, 2017 Was the school that accepted you Eastern New Mexico by any chance? How did they notify you of acceptance- phone call? Email? Trying to decode what radio silence from ENMU means.

kelann Posted November 3, 2017 Posted November 3, 2017 I called and they didn't mail the letters out until the 31st. Hoping hear today or tomorrow. Good luck to you!
