stheart Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Just got into Washington University in St. Louis!!! With an 8k scholarship. I was just about to call it a night here in the library, but this'll power me through! HannahRae 1
CelestialJenkins Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 @stheart That's great! Congrats, when did you apply? Is that scholarship per year, if you don't mind me asking?

I got admission from Uof Michigan and U Penn, and Upenn gave me more scholarship than UMichigan. I am planning to study macro social work. If this was your case, which school would you guys prefer? U of Mich is the top school for Social Work, but funding is the most important thing. Michigan's program is only 16 months though I think.

Yes, it's per year but I'm only doing a 1-year program (Advanced Standing) so scholarships per year or not per year are negligible!

That's why I didn't apply to any of the expensive schools in expensive cities. I don't think the U.S. News rankings are all that important when you're comparing schools among the top 20 or 30.

Yes, in general. Some people are telling me to stay in my home state, but I don't want to live there anymore. However, I do not want to drown in debt.

I've definitely have several sleepless nights thinking about how much this degree will cost. I feel very lucky because my housing cost is pretty low and I have a job that allow me to save a good chunk of money before school starts. I just keep telling myself that this degree is essential to my career and it's what I need to achieve my goals. But, 45k of debt is still a scary thing to contemplate.
CelestialJenkins Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 (edited) @atomizer, there are more funding options at private schools, especially places like University of Chicago. I live in Portland and Portland State University has a great program, but it's the only program in-state. If I were to get a reasonable scholarship from any of these private schools (95 percent of accepted applicants get scholarships at UofC), it would make it comparable to staying at PSU, and cheaper than going to some out of state public school. Every adviser I've talked to encouraged me to apply to the private schools because of scholarships available and wealth of the programs. I also feel like the field placement options in a city like LA or Chicago would be better than a lot of other places. BUT I'm also from Portland, which is getting pretty expensive already. I also got my undergrad here and am wanting to mix it up. I've seen a LOT of people getting $25,000/ year at Chicago, which would make it roughly $20,000 per year in loans or other scholarships, which is pretty average I'd say. That said, I would never pay that tuition without scholarships. I just think the changes are pretty good of getting funding Edited February 21, 2018 by CelestialJenkins

Some private schools have great funding opportunities, but a lot of them (Columbia, Penn, Denver) seem to be pretty stingy when considering the tuition amount and cost of living. My personal goal is to get my degree for roughly $45k debt or less. Which may not be possible...but fingers crossed! Chicago is great but I've lived there before and want to try something new
CelestialJenkins Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 (edited) @atomizer good luck! I applied to USC and Denver just to see, but they're my last choice. I hear Denver sometimes gives decent scholarships, but maybe it's only to certain people. Where all did you apply? Yeah, I didn't apply to New York City schools, even if I wanted to, because I can't imagine ALSO affording cost of living in New York WUSTL would be cool if I get funding...Saint Louis is cheap Edited February 21, 2018 by CelestialJenkins
atomizer Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 Fair point about Denver -- they DO offer several full-tuition scholarships, which would be pretty amazing. And maybe they have other great scholarships too...I did a lot of my "research" just by reading threads on this website, which is probably not the most exhaustive source of information. And in the end I was too lazy to apply, thinking there was no way I'd get one of those full-ride scholarships.
HannahRae Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 Something that is making me feel a little better and a little more in control of the pile of debt heading my way is making a detailed budget with tuition, fees and my living expenses for the next two years. I was able to calculate my estimated amounts each year with the interest I'll be accruing and seeing that number, while a bit scary, feels kind of manageable, especially after doing research into income based repayment.

I skimmed through a past year's forum and it looks like people started hearing back around mid-March -- which totally makes sense because that's what the application itself says. I'd just hoped we'd hear a little earlier than that.
BackNSchool83 Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I received an email from the Dept of Social Welfare at UCLA today offering me admission to the program !!! I am thrilled, this has been a goal for the past 2 years that just became a reality, I'm so excited! For those waiting to hear, I did not receive any notification on my portal for UCLA's graduate studies division, and in the admission letter I was told that the decision letter from the grad division may not be sent for a few weeks. So I say keep an eye on your email that you have attached to your application, odds are at least at this point that any decision will be received there first from the SW department, specifically from Tiffany. Go Bruins !!! stheart and RK1 1 1

With some schools/programs sending out notices already I was hoping to hear a little sooner, especially since their deadline was 2 weeks sooner than most schools I was looking at. I only applied to UW and CSUF (I'm a SoCal resident). Extended programs for both so that I can work while taking courses and doing practicum 2nd year. Figured it was the most responsible means of attending, assuming I get in to either. My stats are on a comment I made elsewhere in this thread, but I'm sure you could find them by looking at my profile. Did you want to share yours?

MAR14 Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Hi all! For those wondering about the CSULA 2 year MSW program, I received an acceptance packet via the mail. I applied for the priority deadline (Nov. 15th) and submitted my application on Nov. 15th in person. The acceptance letter was printed on Feb 14th and the actual packet was postmarked Feb. 20th. Hope this helps.
HannahRae Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Just got accepted to Denver! Even though I've accepted another offer, it is still really exciting to have that rush after an acceptance. I'm going to celebrate by going to Target and buying shit I don't need! MSW_bound2018, kd225 and NalaBlue 2 1

Is there any better way to celebrate? Funny enough, I also go to target when I’m stressed waiting for decisions lol
